Ever hear of the "God Machine"? is basically a set of tunable electromagnets that can produce all sorts of feelings in people, everything from feelings of the presence of a divine being (hence the name) to apparitions and absolute bone-chilling terror. I wonder if under just the right circumstances, similar naturally occurring electro-magnetic fields can happen. Its known that some people are more receptive than others, and are more receptive at different times. But basically it creates the effect of the thing, without the thing being present, which obviously causes some internal chaos while you think, "hey, I'm armed to the teeth and can't see anything" which is even more freaky!
Another possibility is that its known that our "subconscious" filters out massive amount of sensory data that our conscious mind doesn't get told. Sometimes its just a matter of us "knowing" the final calculation which in this case may have been RUN! The stranger part of that is that without the full story of whats happening, the conscious mind fills in the gaps, making up the cause for the effect.
Not trying to downplay your experience. What happened would have been scary regardless, even if you knew exactly what was happening. The brain plays some nasty tricks on itself sometimes. I find it fascinating the more we learn about how the brain works, and processes information. The brain is far more capable than we give it credit for, or use it for. But its because in our modern world we are trained for one set of conditions. Put a human in any other set of conditions, and the possibilities are endless.
I've had experiences before where something was for sure following me. It was probably a very confused squirrel wondering why I kept running away!
