Have you ever seen anything creepy?

Spent a lot of time outdoors, both for work and personal time. Day after day, for years. Never saw anything remotely paranormal, but there were a few things that stick out as being abnormal. The remains of a deceased infant... dump piles of animal skeletons... and one mid-day close call with a panicked coyote that may have been fleeing a swamp monster in southwest Arkansas*. :D

Something I have found everywhere, mountains - desert - forests, the darned things are everywhere. Golf balls.
Mylar balloons are everywhere too. Those are easy to understand, but golf balls?

* Fouke, Arkansas. The Legend of Boggy Creek.

Them's gopher eggs. I've seen 'em everywhere too.

I love these type of threads...

My first year of college(before I transferred to a school in Vermont) I went to the University of Cincinnati (93-94). I joined the backpacking club and on weekends we would drive down to Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky. It is a beautiful place with natural bridges and cliffs but all weekend long it is continual hooting, hollering and ye haws all through the night -- it is the type of area that draws a crowd and many get in late on Friday night. One fall weekend we were hiking in --it was already dark and moonless. I was walking by myself up ahead of a small group and I heard the sound of a fingernail scrape against my backpack. I totally froze, looked off to my right and there is a man standing there.

He then says,"I'm really really sorry -- I thought you were my friend with the group back there. I just wanted to play a joke." Needless to say I was quite relieved.

Yes, earlier today in fact.

I was sitting on the front porch of my sister's house around lunch time just talking. This truck stops at the intersection just across from her house (T intersection). There are two men sitting in it and they both had their faces painted. Not like clowns or anything like that (would've been creepy enough), but just a flat, bright white. I have no idea the reason they were like that, possibly up to no good. I thought about reporting it to the police, but I didn't as I failed to get the info off the license plate. Maybe I should have reported it anyway, even thought it might have been nothing. Either way, it was a little unsettling.

Camping out in the So Cal desert, my gf and I were there a night before anyone else.

It was a moonless night, overcast with no wind, as we set up a campfire - indian style - with just a small amount of wood. I heard a noise out in the darkness and, playing hero, I picked a decent size branch and walked towards the sound. Just as I got outside the light from the fire ALL the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I got a huge bolt of adrenaline . I've never experienced anything like that before or since, but it very obvious to me that I was in waaaay over my head.

Spun around and got the gf and sat in the van for the rest of the night. No idea what it was but I suspect mountain lion.

It's funny reading these things. I don't have any great stories to share about wilderness stuff, sometimes when I'm half asleep I hear something and become more alert and get my knife and flashlight close to me trying to pay attention to sounds. But reading a lot of the stories just goes I show that unexplainable sense that we have for our own safety, sometimes even alerted without any provocation but in some of your cases you became alerted for a good reason!

One thing I love about W&SS is that it really teaches you a lot about yourself as well as humans in general. And reading stories and stuff here you can compare and actually learn a lot not just about skills and such but about humans in general. Just the other day I was watching that show Naked and Afraid and I said to my girlfriend "You know these people have training and experience in W&SS and they are really dying slowly, they are 'surviving' at its very essence. An it got me thinking just how much every human really relies on eachother even without notice sometimes. How many people are involved with just supplying food at a local grocery store to masses? We went from small groups or tribes who relied on eachother to survive to bigger and more complex systems and groups. But very few people can say they completely self reliant. I just think it's fascinating to read about our animalistic instincts that we often observe in animals and realize there are parts of us that we don't control or have any understanding of but can save our life. Just that "something isn't right feeling" alone in an immediate situation is fascinating to me. But how far does that go? Just the other day my mother was telling me she had a bad feeling for no reason and decided to call my grandmother, my grandmother answers an my mom asks her what she was doing. Well apparently my grandmother got a call telling her that her credit and debit accounts were going to be canceled unless she provided her account information and PIN numbers! My mother told her to cancel her accounts immediately since she just started inputting information and it was obviously a scam. But what are the odds that she called her possibly just in time? And how do we explain the unsettling feelin my mother got that urged her to give her a call? Coincidence? Or something more that we just can't explain?

Anywho really enjoying your stories guys/gals, this is a nice thread. I also think it's quite humorous that a lot of us go off to play hero when our significant others are around, and in some cases end up realizing we may be in over our heads and decide to get out of there. And if we are in groups we feel safe enough to investigate and confront whatever it was.

One story I do have about creepy things and weird feelings from my own personal experience was not actually in the woods. I use to live in this apartment with three of my room mates, and I used to experience weird feelings and noises sometimes. Especially late at night. One night me and my ex-girlfriend are laying in my bed, my room connected to the kitchen and the lights in both rooms were on. It was mid winter here in Massachusetts so all my windows were closed in the house. So we are just laying there talking and all of the sudden I stop talking and look at my door, I hear this weird knock like someone tapped my door with a closed fist. Then I see a shadow pass underneath the closed the door as if someone walked by my door. My friends were out at the market so it was just the two of us. I make no mention of it and I get up to see what this was, nobody there, no windows open. I could not explain it but I didn't want to scare my girlfriend, but later that night we had a little gathering. I am telling one of my buddies the story and right when I say I heard a knock my ex interrupts me and says "Yeah and then a shadow passed underneath the door as if someone walked by!" I had no clue she also saw that until that moment. That was the first of many weird experiences in that apartment, and needless to say it got to the point where I really could not sleep at night until I moved out.

Whew some creepy stories here!

Im never afraid of animals (seen mountain lions plenty here even in the city), I am afraid of humans, here in cali, people are dirty and not trust worthy.

coyote, I wont even change pace, but mountain lions are tricky, you have to be alert and once spotted I usually let thr lion know I am not an easy catch (usually make noise and wave around my big kukri to reflect light). Cats understand risk and have always walked away from me.

There used to be a guy here in this forum named Magnusen and his avatar creeped me out. It was like his stink-eye was following me. He had this sneer that was like, "I'm going to eat you!".

He's gone now so I feel safe here. I never did find out if he actually ate anyone, but several people went missing while he was here. :)

hahahahaha so funny Codger

Used to work on a military base in a old hospital built vintage 68, was told this story bout 2005. The house keepers who worked there at night had many creepy experiences they did not like to be in there by themselves and usually would not work alone some of them quit because of "haunts". They had a lot of weird stories.

This story though- came from a military guy.

The guy would work sometimes late into the evening. One night he had forgot to sign some paperwork went back- he pulled into the parking lot close to midnight. Up on the third floor in a office a hall light was on, some one was looking out into the parking lot from the office seemingly lighted from the hall, looked like a lady.

"Damn that's strange- somebody else is up there maybe working." He thought.

When he got up there it was cold as hell all the lights were off no one was there.

He said he took off quick about face- went back to his car, went home.

He said he thought about it after the fact, seems the person in the window looked liked she was wearing a nurse uniform complete with hat.

They have not worn that since the early 90's at least.

I was paddling my canoe and about to go ashore for lunch when I noticed someone looking at me from behind a tree.

This was deep in the woods, I just kept on paddling as if I hadn't noticed anything.

There was nothing special about the guy, but it was just weird.

Definitely got my "Spidy senses" going.

Was it the Spidy Sense, or the dueling banjos playing in your ears:)

Let's get this thread started up again! Some really cool, and creepy stories. I have not really seen anything weird. But I have had that “feeling" and seen some weird shadows.
Just a couple weeks ago I decided to go “scouting" out back (there are probably 30 acres behind my dads house) at 5:00 in the morning. I brought a maglite and my 30-06 and wanted to see if this would make for a good spot for deer/coyote etc. It was dead quiet and I ended up sitting at the base off a tree with a Maglite and rifle in hand the whole time. I did not definatly see anything but just that feeling. And I ignored it and waited out there till sunrise. At one point I saw this sort of morphed, white figure (just solid white), no distinguishable features other than bipedal and taking a step. My flashlight went over it (probably 30-40 yards out) and I shined it back in that direction to look again and it was gone. Some other weird noises and stuff. But nothing weird or abnormal. There have been a few other times I have felt like this that are just not worth mentioning due to lack of eventfulness

I've had several strange things occurred here and there throughout my life. One time, living in Taipei, Taiwan and in the room I had rented for several years, I woke up one morning about 4:00 a.m. or so to scratching noises in my room. I sat upright on the edge of my bed, turned on the light, immediately alert. You see, during the summer, cockroaches can be a problem over there, and that's what I thought it was.

I looked toward where the noise had come from. My desk was there, maybe four feet from me. On the desk were two piles; one a stack of newspapers, and the other a stack of large news magazines, neatly stacked, maybe a foot high each. As I looked at them, suddenly the newspaper stack got slapped down; I saw the stack dent downward. A slit-second later, the magazine stack got slapped at an angle, and several thick, heavy magazines flew nearly horizontally halfway across the room onto the floor, as if an invisible hand had angrily knocked them off. These two impacts happened very quickly, with loud impact sounds, 'whack!-whack!'

Having had paranormal experiences before, I was not shocked, but I sat there momentarily, mentally trying to find a normal cause. There was no cockroach, no rodent or other animal. No breeze (the windows were all shut, and there was zero breeze). No fan on. It was a small room. I sat there about five more minutes, then lay back down on my bed. After all, I'd lived there for years without incident. I supposed it was 'someone' wanting to get my attention. I did keep the light on for a while, though. Now, had it been a cockroach, I would have scrambled to get rid of it. I have roachaphobia.

Perhaps not coincidentally, it was in the final hours of Ghost Month.

Alright guys, I'm still pretty young, and don't really have any stories as creepy as many of you yet, but my best friend and I had a pretty creepy experience one night in the woods by his house. We live in western washington, in the country, but not around really big forested areas, So lots of houses, but most on multiple acres of woods. We were playing a game of airsoft one night at about midnight in the woods, with my younger brother and a couple of his friends. (I was about 16 at the time, they were 14). My friend and I hadn't seen my little brother and co. for about twenty or so minutes, so we yelled into the woods telling them that the game was over, because we were bored. We didn't get a response so we headed back to my friend's house, expecting them to have already quit and to be at his place...

When we got there, my little brother and his friends were nowhere to be seen, so we went back out into the woods yelling for them, starting to get pissed off (thnking that they were screwing with us)... Then we heard this noise... It sounded like a mix between a barn owl's screech, a cougar scream, and a velociraptor from Jurassic park...We figured it was my brother and his friends making noises to try to freak us out, So we kept yelling their names and telling them to quit it. We heard the noise two or three more times, (the frogs had all shut up, and the woods were dead silent other than the noise). We were very spooked, and both had the chills so we went back to the house scared. It turned out that my brother and friends had walked back to his friends house like 40 minutes before... Still have no idea what it was out there, but I've never heard that thing since, now 3 years later (with many nights spent camping out in those woods)

well... been reading this post off and on for most of the day, scares me and fascinates all at once... im not much of a woodsman but i do remember one incident when i was a young fella. i was in my early twenties, struggling with two kids, etc... living on long island with no car meant buses were the way to go so there i am taking my two really young daughters on a shuttle bus in long beach, fully packed with people and all of a sudden while sitting in two seats one kid to my left and the other on my lap i got a chilllllll!!! its crazy-im fraked but look over my shoulder and a dude strap hanging in the aisle is looking at me, i instinctively take my daughter off my lap and sit her where i was sitting, shes looking at me confused and i felt guilty for sure! but duty called (im not big, lost most of my scrapes, you get the picture) i stood face to face and i cant explain the feeling other than it was kinda chilly and i had no thoughts only kinda growled, not loud though, just grrrrrr between clenched lips. this fuk had greasy slicked back hair and kept leering at me off and on but showed no signs of fear or confusion....... and thats it fellas, i dont remember the rest i know me and the girls got home safe! but i will tell you this, and im not religious or care to be he was EVIL .... and ive only told one other person that story and that was over twenty years ago and yes my teeth are still clenched as i write and recall.

I've had the feeling of being watched in the outdoors a few times myself, and once in a not to deep patch of woods that I was very familiar with and comfortable in had a very strong sense of danger come over me in an instant! I still don't know what it was or if it was anything, but I knew how I felt and I listened to my gut...and my gut said run! The other couple times I just had a raised level of awareness, but that time I went from enjoying a peaceful walk I'd done hundreds of times before to an almost blind panic in a second!

I have a couple story's of creepy things I've actually saw, I'll just tell the shortest one for now.

I was born and lived in Georgia my whole life, until I met my wife to be in Ohio. We stayed at her grandparents old house, which has the "century house" plaque by the front door, I was told the house was built in the late 1800's. Her whole family told stories of ghosts and hearing walking, doors opening and closing etc and I didn't really think much of it and didn't really believe in ghost. But one morning as I woke up, with the sun coming through the blinds I saw a figure standing by the foot of the bed, I called out to my wife thinking it was her but there was no answer. I called out again and still no answer, by that time my eyes and adjusted to the light well enough that I could plainly see a young (12-14 year old) girl with long, curly brown hair and dressed in a long white night gown standing there looking at me! I then watched her turn around and calmly walk through the second story window and that was it! A few months latter I saw the same "girl" upstairs again, then latter on my wife saw her once. It wasn't scary or creepy at all actually just something I can't explain!

I have another ghost story or two from that house, and one of something tall that leaves big tracks in the woods...which I might have shared here several years back when it happened. Let me know if anyone wants to hear them :)
