Have you ever sold a knife, or anything else, and deeply regretted the decision?

The attached thread got me wondering how many on the forum have wrestled with decisions to part with things that took effort to acquire or held meaning to them. Did you sell and regret or keep and be thankful.

Take a read of posts 8, 9, and 10 in this thread.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1176890-Attention-Rob-Connally!!

I sold 2 knives Kyle Royer made for me that I miss dearly. Circumstances at the time had me say a heartbreaking fond fairwell to them. The only thing that made me smile a bit was the fact that a fellow collector who truly appreciates Kyle's work eventually ended up with both of them.

I also sold a rare version of a Viper ACR. In a fit of lust for another car I sold it to gain the funding for the new one, which has since been sold as the lust was shortlived. It took 29 years of hard work fixing up and flipping cars to get to the Viper and I let it go because I thought I wanted something else. Dammit!!! It was called a Hardcore Edition and very likely was the only Hardcore in that color combination. The last of that bodystyle and they are now quite pricy on the collector market.

Share your stories please. I'll bet most of us have them. Pics are always welcomed.

No, not really. I don't do much selling of things, and I don't own much that is rare or irreplaceable. Looking back, there are a couple of pistols I sold back in the early 90s that I wish I had held onto, but the feeling about them doesn't rise to the "deep regret" category.

Rob, you have great taste my friend!

I sold a Tony Bose knife a couple years ago that I was drawn for at Blade. I wish now I would have traded it for a pattern I liked better. I did keep it for over a year though. A few other knives and guns over the years, but not many regrets here.

Oh I almost sold a couple Little Giant power hammers that I would have regretted. But my wife said to keep em and just buy another hammer. Might get a air hammer at some point. :)

I sold a really nice little 140# Trenton anvil to a friend, that I miss quite a lot...
Mostly though I regret not yet having obtained things. Like a Nazel air hammer.

All the time. I would say that's how I feel about 85% of what I have sold. Often kick myslef in the ass tonsee what some of the knives I have sold go for now than it really stings.

Regret selling things all the timr til i find something to fill the void. BTW i need to see pics of you actually in the Viper or you didn't really own it. :)That's a great car.

yep. Had a GEC Tidioute #02. Should have kept that one...........

Hey now. Actually, I don't have a pic of me and the car. I was always taking the pics :o

But before you write me off as some internet B.S. artist, I'll create a little Sherlock Holmes style set of pics later to see if I can create a path to ownership :D Should be fun!

There are really three "regret" categories for me. First, of course, is the one where I've regretted selling a particularly awesome knife. There have been NUMEROUS examples (my worst regret is yet to come, very soon in fact), but I'll only show a particular folder, below:

Then, there's the category of regret for having sold a knife twice over time (and regretting it both times), with this one being one case in point:

And finally, because virtually every folder that comes to me, seems to end up being sold (I've always feared I would stray, and start a REAL folder collection, since I suffer from folderflipaphobia), I list my most recent folder acquisition - fearing that it will be sold and regretting the day that it happens:

Interesting for this thread to come at this time. I may still, but have not yet posted a couple of knives I got from a fellow collector who is paring down his collection. Both knives are by Harald Moeller and i'll show the one here -- Bowie. Engraved by Roland Robidoux.

This knife I originally purchased over 33 years ago and then traded to Ron Lockhart and now have repurchased it as it was one I always regretted not having still.

Another was a Rodrigo Sfreddo that I traded to Bob B who sold it to Jon Brand and I missed getting it back by minutes when JB decided to sell it once more.

I don't have a photo but there was a Harvey McBurnette folder that I traded to another local collector at a CKCC show and repurchased it at the next show about 3 months later and then sold half an hour later. I also had a D'Holder "My Knife" that I sold when buying my current home in '84 which I finally replaced but at more $ about 5 years ago. At the same time I sold a Jess Horn which I wish I could have kept as well as some I had made by Jim Pugh in which he used his lost wax casting process.

More than the regrets of sold are a couple of items I did not purchase. The first was in 1997 at the Las Vega Guild show and was a wonderful fighter by Charlie Bennica with Turkish twist Damascus by Jerry Rados and amazing Pistachio wood handle. I curse that non purchase all the time.

My second major regret was a Chinese (Canadian made) by hand embroidery of a Harpist with wonderful lighting, proper 2/3 facial view which would have been perfect on a wall in our family room. Unfortunately we had just recently bought another Chinese (from China) embroidery so did not do so. A year or so later we learned that one on my son's would have liked to have had the one we already owned -- I try to get the kids to tell us things they would like to have so if I want to replace, I know the other piece will have a good home.

That car looks terrific and I can understand the regrets you have. Now the Ron Best folder is something that is quite wonderful Bob. Fits my style for sure. I have saved all of Coops great images of the Ron Best folders he has posted and of all, this is by far my favorite but many are fabulous.

This is a fun thread so thanks for starting it Rob C.

Murray, I think all of us regret that Sfreddo Chute ever departing. I regret it to this day.

Yeah, Rob, good thread!

In '72 or '73, because I was on orders to Vietnam, I sold a 1967 Shelby GT-500. Got very little for it and recently noticed similar cars selling for $75K and up. It was a beauty, ridiculously fast and sorry I have no pictures.

Regretfully, I sold an early '60's Gibson "Dot-Neck" ES 335 guitar to my high school buddy artist Danny Lanois. If you read this Danny...I'll buy her back! ;)

This is a good topic that hits close to home, as i'm sure it does with many of you. I have never had the budget to keep more then thirty knives (usually 25) and when the collector bug strikes I have to come up with quick cash, or I lose an opportunity.

That said, I have sold countless knives that I miss. Here are a few.

And perhaps this may come back to me one day.

Sure , cars, motorcycles, guns, my machine shop . But the thing that hurt the worst was selling my knife collection. It was a modest collection and it all fit in a old wooden machinist tool box. The wife was all ways on me about it (she didn't like it). So any how a while back I got in a bad wreck on my bicycle (5 days in the hospital on a morphine drip) when I got out and started rehabin it I got some stupid thought in my head to sell the collection . I CLed it , a fast talker came around and got it away from me for pennys on the buck . Stupid I know , I was on Jack Daniels and Norcos . Thanks for letting me vent . And I'm gettin the collection back together .

Knives not so much

I've sold some but none I really regret

Bikes yes

I sold an 851 with a big bore kit to buy another Ducati and when I went to by the 851 back the guy had already crashed it

I have thankfully not let any knives go that I regret. I do have 3 that I would take back in a heartbeat - a really nice Springfield M1A Match, a '78 Kawasaki KZ1000a and my stereo - Marantz 2350 reciever, Marantz 6300 Turntable, JBL L100 Speakers, some Sansui tower speakers along with some misc odds and ends. I have been pricing out the stereo lately and the components are selling for more now than when I bought it back in '76. Still have the records, tho!
