Have you ever sold a knife, or anything else, and deeply regretted the decision?

I've sold two cameras that I regret selling. First was my beloved Leica M4-2 Rangefinder, redone in black paint and brass top plate. I sold it to finance a digital RF so I could take more pictures of my son, than I would with film. But I miss that camera. It was a great shooter.

I also "sold" a Rolleiflex 2.8 E3 Planar - it was in great condition and a great shooter - one of the best of the breed. But money was tight, and that camera was for fun, not work - so it had to go. But, luck being what it is, I shipped - the check never cleared, and the buyer has been years of extended promises to pay (he himself flipped the camera immediately to pay other bills). Small claims court across the country for that low a value is too much of a hassle (would have to be done by proxy, cutting into my sale even more)

So - money was still tight, and I was out a camera I really loved using. Double regret. Learned a few lessons along the way though - so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

I have a photo folder of most of the knives I've sold. Most were incredibly cool: Blackwood, Mayo, Levin, Broadwell, Foster, Hawk, RJ Martin, D'Holder and more...

I always justify my sales a making someone else incredibly pleased and that I've been able to purchase another fine maker's work. I'm just the steward for a while.

That's what I lie to myself tell myself, anyway. ;)

Motorcycles? Joe: You're killin' me. Fortunately for you, If that 851 was an 888 then I'd personally kick you in the nuts. :D

I built this Ducati Monster Chromo for a customer before they released the factory version. He could not pay for it. After I was done my generous boss allowed me to purchase it for my labor and his parts. I got PAID to build my own bike. (Sold at double my cost after two years of fun!)

During this period I also had this unassuming Sportster. Damn thing would run in the elevens because it had cams, porting, carb, and 1200cc. Crazy torque!

Worst sale ever. I bought this bike, sight unseen out of a classified in 1985. First generation Kawasaki Z1, with a correct serial number of #000252. Flew to Midland TX and drove it home. It was all there, but crusty. After a COMPLETE rebuild, I found NOS parts and I restored it to factory new and correct. I knew the distinctions and stuck to them. I entered it in two shows where it WON a local show and got honorable mention at a National Show. Also on the cover of this magazine.

I needed money and sold it in 1993 for $4000. What I 'invested' in it. This bike, with it's pedigree, eBay and the internet, and Baby Boomer wealth, would auction for 25k-30K now. Sigh.

I sold my soul for rock and roll.

I had 4 blades by Phill Hartsfield and I just wish I kept one. This is my only knife regret.

I do not to sell knives at all. I have sold many other things over the last fifteen years that I do regret though. A couple of watches, an IWC Da Vinci and a Patek Philippe Calatrava, a few motor bikes, BSA Gold Star 500cc, MV Augusta 750s, MV America and last of all a Ferrari Dino 246.

Regret selling things all the timr til i find something to fill the void. BTW i need to see pics of you actually in the Viper or you didn't really own it. :)That's a great car.

Ulf, your reply is great, what you'll hear on the car forums every time! I also generally believe "Just because you say it with conviction, it doesn't mean squat to me." I posted the car to reel in other "car guys" like Coop and Kevin.

I am posting up a bunch of very nice knives on in the "for sale by individuals" section of the Knife Exchange so I don't want folks who don't know me to think I'm bogus. Hence, the ownership trail in pictures.

The whole car thing spans 36 years and over 30 cars flipped after working on them. Here's what I looked like when it started in the 70's and here's me now (yeah, that's Vanessa Williams). You can see what time has done :D Also, there's me and Wally Hayes at Blade (those are different shirts in the Wally and Vanessa pics, I wear vertical stripes to try to hide the waistline :o) and the V-rod which will tie backgrounds and recent vehicles to the ACR and to me.

It started in the 70's with a $200 1968 Cougar (gold with flapping vinyl roof) that I fixed up and sold for $500. Moved to a 69 Camaro, 2 Datsun 240 Z's, and a load of others over time. I'd fix, sell, buy and repeat. I got to drive them for a while as a side benefit. The more recent cars were all kept under 1000 miles to retain value (with the exception of the V-Rod, trucks, and the Black Viper). There have been 4 Vette.s, 2 Camaro's, 10 trucks, 2 Porsche's, an Audi, a Shelby, and others.

You will note I have a psychological issue with having color matching vehicles.

Sold the SRT8 Challenger and the Red Viper vert to get the ACR. For a moment, they were together...ACR incoming, Challenger and Red Viper leaving.

To Be Continued...

And you sold the ACR Viper because...?

It was an investment that I fell in love with (always a mistake). It was sold to finance the next car, an Audi. While I had the Audi the Turbo Beetle was my daily driver. Before anyone makes fun of me because of my Beetle, I think Paranee might have one ;) Nuff said.

These pics were from when I was in my black car phase. All are sold and I miss each of them, including the Bug.

Random other car and bike pics. Have done the same flipping with bikes. Started with the Yamaha Warrior...added Stage IV kit and pipes then went to a 'Busa, the Aprillia 1000R Factory, an MV Agusta Brutale, Ducati 1098R, and others. Once you go Italian...!

Coop, Great bikes! Joe, damn man, you do it all!

I've done okay selling the things I've shown in the pics, which are all gone now. Everyone, thanks for sharing. Whether it's camera's, sound equipment, vehicles, ex-wives (Yep, don't get me started) or anything else there was always the fun of having them for a time.

Here's my Giant Schnauzer and my Maltese. They are with me for the duration! Hey, they don't color match.

I sort of regret selling my Shiva Ki fighter to Joe Paranee....but he really likes it....and I only "kind of" liked it.

Sold an ivory Micarta handled Jody Samson fighter at the California Custom knife show in 1998...wish I could have that one back.....other than those two, I enjoyed many knives for a while, and then they moved on. I have a lot of knives.

Usually, I'm really happy when they go. I gave Adam DesRosiers a Matt Lamey chopper a couple weeks back....that still has a smile on my face, and sold a Lee Gene Baskett survival knife to Todd Begg, which also has me happy. It's nice to have them to play with and then move them on to someone who is going to enjoy them even more!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Of course! Tough to see down the road what we should have kept. Easy to let go, though...Cheers

The 2.0l turbo 4 used by VW/Audi is the best engine I ever owned. I drive a Passat Wagon (2 Great Danes take up some room) and my wife drives an Eos. Wonderful driving cars. VW service is atrocious though in my area.

The attached thread got me wondering how many on the forum have wrestled with decisions to part with things that took effort to acquire or held meaning to them. Did you sell and regret or keep and be thankful.

Take a read of posts 8, 9, and 10 in this thread.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1176890-Attention-Rob-Connally!!

I sold 2 knives Kyle Royer made for me that I miss dearly. Circumstances at the time had me say a heartbreaking fond fairwell to them. The only thing that made me smile a bit was the fact that a fellow collector who truly appreciates Kyle's work eventually ended up with both of them.

I also sold a rare version of a Viper ACR. In a fit of lust for another car I sold it to gain the funding for the new one, which has since been sold as the lust was shortlived. It took 29 years of hard work fixing up and flipping cars to get to the Viper and I let it go because I thought I wanted something else. Dammit!!! It was called a Hardcore Edition and very likely was the only Hardcore in that color combination. The last of that bodystyle and they are now quite pricy on the collector market.

Share your stories please. I'll bet most of us have them. Pics are always welcomed.

That Viper was Freaking SWEEEEEET!

SIG PE57 w/ Kern 4x scope/mount & about every accessory for it. Bought it new & fired it once. Sold it a few years later in a fit of economy. Regretted it ever since.
