Have you seen the GEC 5th anniversiary "Whaler"?

p192 of LG4 lists several names... One is "old English rope knife" but my personal favorite is "vest-pocket axe". :D

That's based on an old Platts sunfish pattern -- ginormous hunk of knife. And yes, suspenders should be included in the package. I like the ebony and the shield and the six pins.
:thumbup: A little shorter than the Platts unless I am badly mistaken, but that is exactly what I was thinking.

John.....

S&M Wildcat Driller comes in both a two and three blade configuration....

Dwight, wasn't this pattern you speak of referred as a Rope,or Toenail ?
TIA ,
-Vince

Yes, it has many names - I like "sunfish" because it's short, descriptive of the shape, and the less I have to do with toenails of any sort, the happier I am. :) I've always found the "rope" knife name to be a bit suspect for these - even if Case did use it in their old advertising. Here's a good article on them from Knife World: http://www.elephanttoenails.com/home/documents/KnifeWorldElephantToenailArticle5.06.pdf

Wildcat Driller is actually a decent name - they were supposed to be popular with the old Pennsylvania oil field workers.

In addition to being informative, that is very funny. "Vest-pocket axe" it is! :D

I haven't looked forward to receiving a pocket knife this much in quite a while. I'll still keep an eye out for an old Platts at flea markets and garage sales but it's great to be able to try the pattern from an American maker without forking over thousands of bucks for an antique.

Well done GEC! :thumbup::thumbup:

I really like the looks of this one I mean it is GEC's 5 year anniversary knife after all, they should do something a little out of the ordinary.

Found this on the tsaknives blog

EEK! Thats one of my "grail" patterns, the old platts swell toenail! $170 is alot of coin though... only thing its missing is the long pull/double pull swedges etc. beautiful looking knife though

Then how about the Northfield version in Cocobolo

It might be closed but there's the long pull and swedge...

That Northfield knife does look cool. I think it was a good choice for an anniversary knife--it's a highly collected pattern and the swell center is uncommon for the sunfish pattern.

I would like to see a side by side pic of the whaler and the sunfish. I really love the design but just wish it was a little smaller.

It's actually somewhat smaller than the Platts originals, difficult though that might be to imagine.

I doubt I will ever own or carry this model. I will say thumbs up to GEC for making it though it's a very visually interesting knife. It'd be a good BBQ knife - You can use it to cut open the package of hotdogs and use it to flip the burgers . :)
