Have you seen the GEC 5th anniversiary "Whaler"?

Happy Friday to you as well. Appreciate the add'l pics. There's a part of me that wants one and I'm having trouble beating him down. That broad spear just looks kind of neat. I keep thinking anyone that appreciates GEC should have at least one.

Here's the knife that commemorates this year's GEC Rendevous!
Another BIG chapter in the GEC Whaler story - they made 30, and sold 10 each day. #16, for my Sept.16th birthday.
Some day I'm going to flip a burger with this thing; what a beauty!!:D

Oh man I need one of them!!! the ebony with the bronze pins is a REAL nice touch...so how many are they making in total?

Got an Ebony handle on order - and found pics of one with Primitive Bone - Wow!

I'd love one - but I can't keep selling internal organs to justify this obsession.

One of the things I like best about this forum is the wide variety of knives that folks are attracted to, including some of the less common designs. Although I find the GEC Whaler to be as repulsive a knife as I've ever seen, being able to read comments by folks who really enjoy the look gives me a much different perspective on it. Thanks, guys, for broadening my perspective.

I'm actually not sure what I think about its looks -- for me it's a fascinating pattern - definitely a design extreme, and I like to see a well done example of it. As far as use, no, I would never try to carry one - even if I had suspenders. I just wish GEC had gone all the way and made it fully as large as the original Platts versions.

Glad you were able to secure one of the rendezvous knives Charlie........After seeing them this week around the net, my right shin is sore where I've been kicking myself that I talked myself out of not getting one. At least I picked up one of the Ebony 5th year annivesary whalers. A very nice handful!!

I wonder what special routes have to be take to find bone / stag / etc. wide enough to cover that dude? Not many beams will cover that width.

They have been really slow coming out as well; what part of production takes so much more time?

How close in size do they compare?

GEC's are 4 3/8" closed - originals were 4 5/8" nominal, though they often measured 4 3/4" (lots of hand work back then, so the specs varied a bit). If you're going to get that close to the original specs, why not go all the way?
