Have you seen the new Benchmade Neil Blackwood folder?

gotcha ;)

who gets dibs on the protos? I've seen BM pre productions for sale here and on ebay before.

I just love that knife!
Framelock, tip down, S30V, Benchmade, Blackwood, recurve...
Everything is perfect in my eyes.

I still don't get it how someone can hold the rights for a HOLE!
On the other hand, if it is possible - and we all know it is - i see no violation of anyones rights, because the BM630 has 3 holes...

I really really really want one. :D

I want, need, will have.

Its big, it has a frame lock, it can be waved (and dont you frelling believe for a second I wont flip that clip and wave it, call me a bastard but I will :D) - I am IN like flynn.

As for the hole issue.
Guys - got news for ya, you all have a hole. Several of them. ;)
Its such a non issue, who gives a schtit? really, cant you guys be happy without something to bitch over?
Hole, schmole - hole openers are great, they work the best of any of the thumb openers, especially under stress.
Sal also pioneered the use of the pocket clip, but I dont see y'all bitching and moaning over other people using pocket clips - so its stupid to bitch and moan about holes, of any shape.

Spyderco does seem to be a design target.

Spyderco invented and has been consistently using the round opening hole since 1981. It was first covered by our patents (ending in the early 2000's) and by our registered trademark (which began in the late 90's). Our round opening hole trademark was been a symbol of quality, performance and integrity for more than 20 years.

Custom makers selling knives in America have been paying our modest fee ($50/year) for many years for the legal right to use our opening hole. "Whiskers" Allen was the first to begin the "honor roll" many years ago. There are more than 50 custom makers from all over the world that are licensed to use the Spyderco opening hole. One condition of the license is that designs cannot be sold to manufactuers for production that incorporate the round hole.

Spyderco also owns patents on a diamond shaped hole (licensed to John Anthon of Timberline) and an arrowhead shaped hole not being used.

These patents and trademarks were/are only relevant to folding knives and did/do not include fixed blades.

The fact that there are so many folders with "other than round" opening holes on the market is testimonial to the fact that many wish to follow our lead.

Spyderco licensed Benchmade to use the patented (at the time) & trademarked round hole for a while in the 90's. It was used to launch their AFCK. Later the agreement ended and Benchmade went to their oval hole, which is fine and fair.

Spyderco's hound hole is a registered trademark with the US government. We've have always tried to run our business in an honest, fair and proper manner.

To my eye, it looks like a Spyderco, but I'm biased.
Take away the large hole and leave the other two and it looks "less" like a Spyderco.
Take away all of the holes and put a thumb stud there, and it doesn't looks like a Spyderco at all. Take away the two smaller holes and there is no doubt. Add the two smaller holes to Frank Centofante's "Vesuvius" design or Bob Terzuola's "Starmate" design, and they would be siblings, to my eye.

Spyderco has not heard from Benchmade or Neil regarding the design so there is little that I can say. "Ideas" always seem to have different meanings once converted to "legaleze". Perhaps they have information we do not have. I imagine we'll find out.

You've been around here for how many years? I think you know the answer to that question :)

I wonder what would have been said if, when Spyderco showed the first pictures of their upcoming SpyderFly balisong, it had three butterflies in graduated sizes engraved on the blade, or a butterfly shaped "hole" in it. After all, it is a "butterfly knife".

Probably nothing if the custom maker who designed it was known for putting 3 butterfly's on his knives.

Where have all of you been while Neil was building his career as one of the top makers in the business? All of a sudden the arch enemy Benchmade makes a knife identical to a custom he makes and it's a violation?

Not your fault Steve. It's just a hot topic, one bound to create controversy. Personally I feel the matter is between Benchmade, Neil Blackwood, and Spyderco; in other words, none of our business. At any rate, a topic which doesn't stir up some kind of controversy is nearly always a boring one. This most certainly is not one of those topics.

This knife just wouldn't look right without all three of those holes, and they have to be round. I sure hope Trademark infringement doesn't put a crimp in this thing. However, I do believe that a company has every right to defend its Trademarks.

Roadrunner is right....

All you controversial mofo put a sock in it! Stop sticking your nose where it doesn't belong! If there's a problem, Spyderco and the rest of the involved party will handle it OUTSIDE of this forum walls so STOP being a pro and get on with life...IF you have one that is!:grumpy: All this yadi-yada like it's going to make a difference...shheeehhhsss!!!

Now to the REAL topic, the knife. It's something new and got my heart throbbing since the last time BM has got any folder that gets me excited as this one. If the deal goes through, i'm definately getting one. But if it doesn't...a good exercise for me heart!:D

Eric.

This knife really looks promising. I've always liked the way Mr. Blackwood's knives looked. I just hope Benchmade keeps the blade-size under 4" to keep it carry legal.

Oh, it's going through for sure - my understanding is that first production is being milled now with realease at SHOT. :D :D

I've been waiting for a production version of the Skirmish for quite a while. This folder's definitely on my wish list, although I'm not sure that I like those anodizations...the dimples would look better if they were all of the same color (I'd prefer blue).

If you are right cpirtle, then i better prepare me wallet for some "action"!!!:D Thanks for the heads-up, it's indeed a good news!

Quiet Storm ~ I like blue color too but the dimples with different anodization makes it look rather interesting...maybe not a bad thing after all?:p

Eric.

I'm right ;)

I also "heard" that the multi-colored dimples were decided on to make a big, possibly ofensive looking knife less intimidating. It was "taste tested" beforehand to see what reactions people were having.

It works IMO.
