Head for the hills

I've been stuck at work a lot lately, but today got out for a much needed day trek. Took my Chris Reeves Green Beret
out with me for some field trials (see thread GB Field Trials), but the main point was to get some fresh air...
ya, okay, and to play with fire.

So I headed for the hills. Great day to be out: cool (16 deg F) and clear skies. But high clouds and a falling barometer
portend snow later.

Came upon a Beaver lodge on the way in.

Downed trees everywhere and rugged terrain.

Tea time! I think tea is less likely to be dehydrating than coffee, besides, I like it. Melted snow for water.
It was a windy day and I didn't bother with collecting natural tinder, I went straight for my waxed jute.
Thank you to whoever thought this up, best fire starter ever. Check the GB Field Trials thread for pics of
batonning the fire wood. Chiefly I used numerous twigs from downed trees.

Back wandering around, I came upon some tracks:

When the snow is deep, the deer drag their hooves. Followed the track for a bit and found a buck. Hard to see,
he's about 130 meters away.

He spooked when I crunched a pine cone with my boot. But I tracked him some more and found a small herd of
8 deer. One was a ten pointer, oh be still my beating heart....

Great day to be out. Best piece of gear I took was a pair of gaiters for my boots. The snow was deep in spots.
Best piece of gear I forgot was my hiking staff. However, I cut one from a downed tree. Yes, nature provides.

Awesome pictures Rotte. Love the campfire tea - which I could had one today buy our spot wasn't allowing fires. Awesome tracking!

love the pics! very different terrain than the dense tree choked wet coast here....

i got the same cup, heats up pretty dang fast eh?

If you run short of snow, send your trucks to North Dakota.:D

Great shots, Glad you got out of the rat race for a day at least. BTW I think the Rats are winning.;)

What pack were you carrying?

Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure the model is called the 'Rambler' made by Duluth Pack. Canvas and leather. It's become my standard day-trek bag,
but I've used it for over night trips as well. It's fairly roomy so you can put lots of extras in. The weather can be shifty this time of
year, so I carry extra clothes, a JETBOIL, some food and water.

It doesn't have a hip belt, so you need to watch the weight. Bigger isn't always better.

That cup is a Snow Peak 700 and it does heat up quickly. It used to weigh next to nothing, now it's coated in about 18oz of creosote
and pine pitch. Smell good though. :D

Yeah the rats are kickin' my ass, but they can wait 'til Monday.

awesome pics Rotte... looks like a gorgeous area... i love all those rocks...:)

Looks like you had a nice day out.
I thought the area looked like Vedawoo near Cheyenne but the Welcome sign doesn't look like the one on I25 that I remember.
Keep tracking the deer, their horns should be falling off next month maybe. I like shed hunting also. Its a great time for me, the boy and the dog to be roaming about in the hills.

Vedauwoo is correct gents--great little spot, I should try to get there more often.
I usually go hunting in the Sierra Madres west of Encampment; but after the bucks I
saw yesterday my plans may change.

I'm not sure where the road sign came from.

Awesome photos. You are a lucky man, indeed. I will be in the CO Rockies in two and a half weeks for about 5 days. I cannot wait. Thanks for posting. -DT

I also hunt the Sierra Madres...bowhunt.
Elk season sucked this year...way too hot!!!!
I've always see good deer in Vedauwoo, just never hunted there.
