I've been stuck at work a lot lately, but today got out for a much needed day trek. Took my Chris Reeves Green Beret
out with me for some field trials (see thread GB Field Trials), but the main point was to get some fresh air...
ya, okay, and to play with fire.
So I headed for the hills. Great day to be out: cool (16 deg F) and clear skies. But high clouds and a falling barometer
portend snow later.
Came upon a Beaver lodge on the way in.
Downed trees everywhere and rugged terrain.
Tea time! I think tea is less likely to be dehydrating than coffee, besides, I like it. Melted snow for water.
It was a windy day and I didn't bother with collecting natural tinder, I went straight for my waxed jute.
Thank you to whoever thought this up, best fire starter ever. Check the GB Field Trials thread for pics of
batonning the fire wood. Chiefly I used numerous twigs from downed trees.
Back wandering around, I came upon some tracks:
When the snow is deep, the deer drag their hooves. Followed the track for a bit and found a buck. Hard to see,
he's about 130 meters away.
He spooked when I crunched a pine cone with my boot. But I tracked him some more and found a small herd of
8 deer. One was a ten pointer, oh be still my beating heart....
Great day to be out. Best piece of gear I took was a pair of gaiters for my boots. The snow was deep in spots.
Best piece of gear I forgot was my hiking staff. However, I cut one from a downed tree. Yes, nature provides.
