I have been in contact with heat bath about needing to get some parks 50 and aaa from them. And it seams like thy just lie to me. Telling me things like thy only have an industrial sales license. and that thy don't have any dealers or venders. And that he does not know of any way to get around it and that i should just use another company's oil. I know other knife makers have ordered from them befor so why are thy being a pita about it.

They don't sell to regular old people. That's pretty much the long and short of it. Your best bet is to wait until Darren Ellis manages to get some more and then order from him.

I had no problem getting oil from them 5 years ago. 1 year later they wouldn't speak to me.

I got my last P-50 through a friend who owns a very large company, he said he had never had so much trouble ordering a product of any kind in his life.

what if my work "central Utah tool" wanted to buy some ;)

I had the same problem your having Jt, They pretty much told me they were not intrested in selling anything less than 5-55 gallon drums. I went to houghton.

I think the thing thy need to realize is that yes we don't buy a lot but man there is a heck of a lot of us and it all adds up. and with how the economy is everything helps.

I got a quote from them for a 55 gallon drum FOB Detroit. Pretty sure it's not worth it since I discovered a Houghton outlet that carries 5 gallon pails of G and K, about 25 minutes drive from my house.

At your request, we are pleased to quote on the following:

Product Name Drum Size 1/3 Drs. 4/19 20/Up
50 Quench Oil 55 Gals. $12.25 Gal. 10.95 10.43

F.O.B. Detroit, MI
Price is subject to change.

I have also gotten Parks 50 from Patrick at flyingsteel.com and had no problems and was very pleased with my purchase.

Heatbath wouldn't sell to me either even though I operate a heat treat and supply business. Minimum orders no problem. Can't help but wonder if someone is running it as a tax write-off - or a front for something else.

If I treated my customers that way, I wouldn't be in business long.

Rob!

JT just give it up, we all are just not worth their bother. So you will either have to get it from Patrick or switch to Houghton oil.

It's not that we're not worth their bother. Something scared the hell out of them. They stopped selling to us overnight. Maybe a law suit or a lawyer saying they might get sued, or something.

Big question is, how is Patrick still able to buy from them ;)

he sneaks in at night with a few buckets and disappears into the night.

I think it is partly quantity, and partly liability. A friend purchased a pallet of oil a few years back and had no problem ( I bought part of the pallet). He tried to get a smaller quantity of a different oil, and they said they will not sell to him now.

That's pretty profound...economists are now calling that "the long tail"
economic effect (based upon a stats distribution curve)

I don't understand what possible liability there is? Are they afraid of knifemakers using their oil to make knives that might be used one day to stab someone? seriously..... what a piss poor way of running a business.

The liability issue isn't so much them getting sued as the fact that these oils are used mainly by large industry and require a good bit of safety equipment, gas shielding, and monitoring. They don't want to sell them to small, hobby users who have no control over the flare-up and other potential problems in quench. Quenching one knife is so very different from industrial quenching that they don't really care to get into the supply end of it.
I think it is sort of like the reason I don't sell a knife to a kid who wants an automatic. I am not so much worried about being implicated in the use of the knife as I am just worried that some harm may come from the knife's use.

These oils are re-packaged by many knife and tool suppliers and available to the hobby users in gallon cans.

I agree that it seems strange when they won't sell to a large shop or a professional knifemaker who wants to use their product. I believe it may be a problem of how the order is placed. If you call like a hobbyist ,making statements and asking questions that raise red flags....You may not get any service.
If you call like a business that uses oil, and sound professional and knowledgeable, then you get a pallet. Calling to order a single pail will most likely get you no where. They just aren't set up for small orders. They may not even be set up for things like credit card orders. Many of the suppliers I deal with bill me, and don't want to deal with phone pre-payment.

Statements to avoid using when ordering from a manufacturer:
Uh, Hi,I,uh,am a knifemaker, and I want to know if you will sell me some of your oil.
Boy, I will sure be glad to quit using old motor oil....
HOW MUCH $$$$$$, Holy Sh!t, I ain't got that kind of money......
300 Gallons minimum order!!!...I only need two gallons....

Things to say:
This is Stacy Apelt, with Bamboo Forge, Sales, please ....( when the operator answers)
Hello,Mike ( always try and catch the speakers name), I would like to place an order for your XXXXXXX oil..... No, I am not a current customer, but would like to set up an account.
I am a knife manufacturer, not the biggest one, but growing.
I don't need a lot, a hundred gallons will do for now. Do you have a minimum order?

You get the point.
Stacy
