hi , :) 'what is the " heaviest duty" folding knife?
i need it to open big wood boxes , to dig, and generally to work very hard ,it dont have to be very sharp but i like it to be "extra extra strong" and if possible ,compact.

some options in my mind:

a- Columbia River Prowler http://www.bladesbybrown.com/catalo...og.htm?page=1&category=Columbia+River+Prowler

b- Spyderco Chinook

c-Buck Strider

d- Emerson CQC7

e- Al Mar SERE 2000

f- anything else in your mind ? :)

Cheers!

Not sure if such an animal exists, and one I would be comfortable using for such tasks. If there is I haven't seen it.

The problem with using folding knives for heavy work is of course the potential problem with any mechanical device such as the 'lock'. And the tendancy to damage such knives.

It fails, no more fingers.

If you're opening wooden boxes, diggin', etc. and it has to be a knife I would recommend a good heavy fixed blade. Perhaps something like the Kabar heavy bowie, Camp Tramp, etc.

The thicker and heavier the blade the better.

Although, I understand this might be too much knife to carry around at work.

You might also consider a small pry bar and a hammer. As well as a shovel. These are much more efficient tools for such tasks if available.

Try to get your hands on an Extrema Ratio folder -- I've heard they're some of the stoutest blades out there.

From Spyderco, can't forget the Manix and paramilitary. I wouldn't be surprised if the D`Allara drop point is tougher than it looks.

The Benchmade 710 or Rukus are definitely way up there....in my opinion, pretty much any blue or black class Benchmade. The Skirmish is up there, if you don't mind a framelock.

Airkat Tripwires are massive, never used one myself.

The Buck Mayo TNT

I haven't see it yet, but there's a new Kershaw coming out, bigger than but similar to the Spec Bump, that might be pretty tough

Of course, the actual toughest folders are bali, but those are illegal to carry most places...

What he said. So strong, it's ridiculous! 1/4" thick and a lock-back mechanism some have said to sound like a gun cocking. A REAL folding "pry bar" that'll probably beg for more punishment to whatever you throw at it.

John Greco and Extrema Ratio immediately came to mind when I saw this post, beat to the punch but I can second them.

The German folkes know how to make a test!!!! (and cars 2 ) :)
i wish i could see some more tests like this for the other knifes.

I don't think a folding knife is the right tool for opening crates and digging.

That is how I would describe the ER Fulcrum IID.

I have to second (or fourth or fifth) the Grecos. I have one of his older ones and it's a bear. All tool steel construction, big pivot and 3/16" blade, and most importantly is at a price point where you'll actually use it.

Another sturdy folder to consider might be the Outdoor Edge Magna.

Sturdy Kit Carson-designed liner lock with 4" 8A blade, 1/8" thick.

The Extreme Ratio Fulcrum is probably one of the most heavy duty folders I've seen. You won't be doing much whittle work with it but as far as sharpened pry bars go that is a top candidate as well as one for strongest lock.

The Buck/Strider 880 and the now discontinued Buck/Strider Mini 881 are both some tough little cookies in my opinion. Its true they would be even tougher with a different lock but in truth the lock they come with puts up with quite a bit and they are really thick for the size of the knives. Even still the blades will take much more abuse than the locks the knives sport.

The Manix and the Chinook both seem to be up there as well.

The Swamp Rat Rat Trap folder is a medium duty folder. Busse even said that to me about it so I don't think I'd put that one in the heavy duty category at all. It is in the same size range as some heavy duty folders but I would not call it heavy duty.

Yes, for about $25 or so you should be able to get it regound into more of a knife assuming you don't have power equipment and do it yourself. Even with a full flat grind it would be massivley strong and if the edge was ground down to <0.020" thick it would start to be decent for wood work.

There is nothing I've seen that will fit your bill of opening wood boxes, least not in the folder category. I've heard of folks prying and jimmying doors with Spyderco blades and Cold Steel tantos, but not for regular duty. And though the blades may hold up for awhile, you're likely to lose some fingers before.
