I need one as my current firepit has rusted away into ruin. Preferably one without the flimsy mesh sides, but with grate or expanded steel mesh. Something better looking than "Steel drum, cut in half, 1 each" but not a flimsy home depot piece of crap. Any suggestions?

i have always used the inside of a washing machine with horseshoes welded on for handles. works really well

i have an old washing machine tub that i use..

Works pretty darn good

check with a park ranger and see where they get theirs?
department of corrections makes them for the wildlife and parks folk in my state - and they sell to the public at a fair asking price.

Make one out of rocks if having it elevated over a wood deck or something isn't an issue. If you want to get fancy, you can even mortar them together. What I like with a rock circle is you can make it 4' across so you can fit real sized logs in it.

Why not use stone??

A nice stone pit is the perfect answer so long as it doesn't need portability. We built one a couple years ago using fire brick and some locking retention wall stones for a friend. It looked really nice and was a great addition to the yard. It kind of looked like this when we were finished:

I built one out of stone in my yard over the summer. We spent a good bit of time enjoying a nice fire and some festive beverages!!

if making a stone pit, make sure you throw all the rocks you are going to use in a fire for awhile to test them, unstable rocks can blow up when heated. I used a semi-truck rim, and torched out the bolting plate to make a pit for my parents.

I picked up these to pieces of steel water main pipe about six months ago. Both were from a construction site and were going to scrap. I knocked the mud off to expose the bare steel. One is 26" diameter and the other is 32". One will be my summer fire pit project. Whichever one it is, it will probably be around long after we're all dead and buried.

If I knew how to weld, I'd just make one myself out of 2" square tubing and expanded steel mesh. :(

Tank Heads work real nice. You can buy a 3/8" X 30" for about $250.00 Look Up tank head in a search, i am sure you have a manufacturer near you.

I've had many things fabricated - for less than I expected to pay \

If you know a metal fab shop or trailer company nearby, take your design to them - It's usually a slow time for them now
