Good evening all, I have been on a quest as of late to find a folder. It seems no one makes what I am searching for so I thought I would ask the masses here for help. I have owned all the usual things in the class - i.e. Emerson mini cq's, Benchmade 940 varieties, as well as a plethora of others far too numerous to list. I am looking for a slim design, but I want something that holds up well to abuse. I prefer carbon scales, but I can deal with g-10 or combo scales as well. locking mechanism similar to a Chris Reeve's Sebanza, just something very durable and solid. Now here is the hard part that I have found. On the blade design - I would like either a tanto style or a reverse tanto blade shape, but I want it partially serrated. I called Reeve's today (As they advertise "custom" builds) and the woman whom answered the phone absolutely refused to even inquire as to the partially serrated blade The phone gestapo simply stated "NO". hmmm. very annoying to say the least.... So any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Price is no object, but as a daily user it would be nice to keep it reasonable - so $400 or less. Not saying I wouldn't spend more, but it would have to be pretty spectacular..

Thanks in advance...

Look at a Hinderer with a skinner grind. It has that reverse tanto blade shape sort of. I also recommend you look at the Spyderco Slysz Bowie.

Look at the ZT 804, that might be right up your alley.

Given all your criteria, the closest thing that I can think of would perhaps be the Spyderco Native 5 or Para 3 in a serrated edge or partially serrated edge (although they don't come in a tanto or reverse tanto blade shape). If you're willing to compromise on the serrated edge, and if you're looking for a sub 3" hard-use folder, then alternatively, maybe take a look at the ZT 0900 or the Spyderco Burch Chubby (there are still a few floating around). Personally I can't think of any one knife that fits all of your criteria (tanto or reverse tanto, sub 3" blade, carbon fibre handles, serrated/partially serrated edge, and built for hard-use), but maybe someone else can?

Oh sorry under 3"? I thought you said 3.5 for some reason.

I think they have a 3" Hinderer. Check out the Spyderco Techno. It is such an amazing knife, I think it rivals a Sebenza any day. There are several ZTs that fit your catagory. Consider the 808, the 900 and the 450. There is also the DPX HEAT.

Or just get a small Inkosi. I'm pretty sure that is under 3"

Thanks for the suggestion, I have always been a fan of ZT - however they don't have a sub 3" tanto or reverse tanto that is partially serrated. if they do I must have missed it.

thank you again, but Inkosi doesn't have the shape blade I am looking for and I don't see an option for partially serrated.

You might want to look into some Emersons. Only brand I can think of with partially serrated 3" tantos. Something like the Bulldog in the picture or a Mini CQC-7 would fit the bill perfectly if you don't mind the chisel grind.

Josh at REK still advertises "Serrations Added" and I can vouch for the quality of his work. A Half-Track with serrations added might be just what you want.

OTOH, there are plenty of custom makers here on BF that can make a folder to your specs for you, although custom folders are a bit pricey. Another option is to check the well known custom makers on sites like Ft. Henry or Arizona Custom Knives to see if someone has already made what you want.

It seems you're looking for something custom, there are not a lot of smaller partially serrated tantos/reverse tantos, if any, that otherwise fit your requirements.

A 3 inch and under thread, these are some of my favorite to read gives a person a chance to learn about something new. I have a 3 in XM-18 I really like the really like the knife. Spyderco always has several deliciously tempting designs

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have had the Mini CQC-7, but it didn't hold up very well. Additionally Emerson stopped making the blades minus the wave feature, which has ruined many pairs of my pants.

Thanks for the suggestion - I will call Hinderer on Monday to see if they can make what I want..

Removing a wave hook takes only a few minutes on the belt grinder ;)

Why would you specify a "heavy duty" folder only to limit it to a blade less than 3 inches?

Kinda like needing a "high speed" dragster, "less than 100 horsepower" please.

I get that there are length limits in places... but realize that they translate to capability limits sometimes.
