Heavy duty folder less than 3" blade

Blade shape makes this a hard one. My initial thought went to a spyderco native but blade shape is wrong. I would purchase something close and look into a blade regrind to get it where you want it.

If you go to the Benchmade Custom Shop you can order a mini Grip with a Tanto, part-serrated blade in a variety of steels. You can also select G10 handles in a variety of textures.

I know the Grip isn't considered a "hard use" knife, but I've never had one fail on me and it meets all your requirements.

Good luck!

Why would you specify a "heavy duty" folder only to limit it to a blade less than 3 inches?

Kinda like needing a "high speed" dragster, "less than 100 horsepower" please.

I get that there are length limits in places... but realize that they translate to capability limits sometimes.

Well, I specified what I was looking for, Just because the guy that gets his new Italian sports car seats made with unborn lizard foreskins does not mean it isn't what he wants..

I ve never had one fail either. I consider a full size Grip hard use. Don t know about the mini, but it s probably competitive with any sub 3" blade in toughness.

A mini Griptillian is the best hard use knife I've found.
They have accomplished everything I've tried to do with them.
The sub 3" blade has helped avoid complications when traveling overseas and in some US cities with restrictive knife laws.
I gave one with a D2 blade to my daughter when she left for college because it was the best all around choice.

Thanks for pointing out the customization options Hackenslash.
I'll try it today.

No serrations avail. 3/16 + 2 7/8 + ATS 34 + Tanto + G10 + Heavy Duty = Buck/Strider 881.
All but one your looking for.

Thank you for the suggestion, however partially serrated is a necessity for me personally.

That has been suggested several times and it may be an option if I am unable to find what I am looking for.

LOL, a valid point... which is why I posted this:

GMUGNIER, head over to the custom knife section of this forum.

Toss out your specs and your budget. You'll find somebody who will build you what your need.

Always worked for me, at any rate.

First Edge TrackLock
3" Tanto blade, partially serrated, Elmax steel.

I can't recommend this knife because I've never handled one. I'm just aware of it as a lock nerd. The track lock is a proprietary design and I don't know how hard use it is. Maybe you could find a review, though. Size and style-wise, it seems to fit your needs.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have had the Mini CQC-7, but it didn't hold up very well. Additionally Emerson stopped making the blades minus the wave feature, which has ruined many pairs of my pants.

You can always just not use the wave by covering the spine with a finger when withdrawing the knife. I have had good luck with many Emersons.

You should look at the Griptillian sheepsfoot. It is a modified sheepsfoot that is sort of like a reverse tanto shape. Also try looking for blade shapes described as "Dao" or "Scimitar" which are often describing shapes similar to the reverse tanto. The Emerson Cqc-8 is a Dao shaped dip and the Spyderco Szabo is a Scimitar shape.

I would agree with this. I did the custom configuration deal and made a mini Grip with a CPM M4 blade. Tough little knife. I plan to get a 20CV version soon.
And other than prying, which you shouldn't do with a knife, how hard are you gonna use a 3 inch folder. Most of the knives mentioned can take 3 inch folder "hard use".

Where on earth can I find these buck striders? I am absolutely furious I missed out on them.

Removing a wave hook takes only a few minutes on the belt grinder ;)

Yes, thanks for suggesting that. You are correct about the ease of "grinding" off the wave hook, however i had previously considered this to be an option but according to numerous people at Emerson, the "grinding" or alteration of a blade from it's factory manufactured state completely voids any and all warranties. Additionally - i was quite surprised by how easily the Emerson mini - really didn't hold up as well as a 960 Benchmade, so i thusly decided to try another brand altogether, which is why i am here asking the masses for opinions..

If you do find a knife with your specs, but it isn't available with serrations......send it to Josh at REK.
I see a link posted above. His work is absolutely amazing. Very fair pricing too. Real good dude.
Good luck!

^ This,

There are people that will turn your favourite Sub 3 inch folder into a serrated or combo edge affair.

Well, after much consideration i am still not sure what direction to go. I called Hinderer directly today, and even though they have previously serrated blades for other customers the answer was a resounding no for the half track - additionally it was clearly mentioned that any alterations to the cutting edge as it relates to adding serrations will completely void any and all warranties. So back to square one.. i cant believe the bs involved with simply adding some dang serrations..
