Heavy Opinel Use

opinels are real charmers!
they seem to grow on the owner as they get used.
this is a nice thread.
great handy information and some pretty splendid pictures too (no, make that eye opening pictures).
thanks for reaffirming my deep belief in the wonders of a humble nickle knife...
see, fellas! you don't need to spend thousands of dimes for a good working knife!

Bought a Robinson recently, its basically a synthetic and stainless double bladed Opinel!

dang! dis a 2006 thread, back from the dead...
"tholiver" great set of pictures there.

Vivi it is nice to see someone else here who likes the Opinels. I feel they are very terribly underestimated by many. My Opinel with a 5 inch blade weighs only 3 oz., cuts like a razor and with appropriate techniques and care will perform most every task I carry a knife for. I usualy carry one of my opinels as backup to a fixed blade when backpacking.

Where do you find Robinsons? That looks very cool.

Found them on a random site, not sure how legit it was. Was listed for $25 in any case.

BTW,
The company is Facosa I believe and Robinson just happens to be a model name.

I just have to say that Opinel's carbon steel is now my favorite even with the help of great blade geometry!

I love Opinels too and use them a lot. My mother used an Opinel nr. 8 Effile in the kitchen, a wonderful knife. Very sharp, a thin blade and very cheap. Now I have a number of Opinels and the nr. 8 is my favourite, it fits in my hand best. I use it on the land, when I go camping and I have a couple of them in the kitchen.

I should be getting a #12 in the mail this week, which will offer another 3/4 inch of blade. Should work even better for batoning.

Thanks for review. I bought a #12 and liked it so much I bought a second as well as the folding saw. Very lightweight for such large blades. Too big for pocket but perfect for daypack. I'm toying with the idea of putting both blades on the same handle.

You mean, you can put both of the blade and saw in one piece? That would be cool. That would cover most of the tasks need in the woods already.

Found mine on ebay, a seller in Quebec, Canada. Try ebay.ca
Can't remember the sellers name and the purchase was over 60 days ago so its no longer in my "won" section.
If i remember correctly the seller only occassionally sells them.
He had 4 or 5 different models for sale when i bought mine.
Mostly just color differences but he did have a fisherman's model as well.
