hello all. need help with recommendations for a folder

If your not a fan of Cold steel and the aus-8 steel they use take a look at the Hogue Knives EX01 Knife Green G10 Drop Point Blade 4". 154 CM and G-10 handles makes for a beast of a blade and the button lock on them is very solid. they are a bit more but your getting a great knife with G-10 or aluminum handles and a knife designed by Allen Elishewitz. The EX01 also has a locking button to lock the knife in the open position giving you Fixed blade like performance.

Spyderco Chokwe, just under 4" but plenty of knife and just fantastic to use.

Spyderco Millie is 4", Resilience I think is 4.25".

Cold Steel has several options.

I don't think Kershaw or Benchmade have much that long though, at least not in your price range.

It's a shame your budget wasn't higher. I'd throw the DDR Madd Maxx and AXD into the mix.

the Spyderco military is too short...
I want something that I won't suffer making food with.

The Spyderco Military has a 4" full flat ground blade. It's pretty large for a folder.

well, first I'd like to answer marcinek - the holdup with the Hold-Out is that it's a bugger to sharpen a hollow-grind on a whetston without changing blade geometry, that hollow grind is less suited for food-prep (hamaguriba being the best).

I'm seeing what you'r saying, and I think that I'll get a 5-6" kitchen knife (maybe a petty), a large heavy knife for stuff like splitting wood\hunting, and a small folder to keep in my pocket for when I need a knife "on the go".

that being said - I'm now looking for a general-use folder, about 3.5" to 4" of cutting edge (mine is 82mm and feels on the short side) and not a hollow point.

It's hollow grind, not hollow point.

If you want a food prep or skinning knife get a fixed blade. They're easier to use and clean. You don't want blood and guts getting into the pivot of a folder.

I hear you.
a small kitchen knife to go in the backpack and a larger fixed blade knife for the rough stuff.
regardless, I still need a folder because my current folder kind of sucks. so I've re-defined what I'm looking for:
3.5" to 4", plain edge, no hollow-grind. for what I'd call regular\general use (basically for whatever small stuff that needs cutting).

I don't like spyderco much, and the price of them is too high.

I like the Benchmade Griptilian and Harley Davidson LFK, SOG aegis AE-01, Spec-Elite I, and Trident Satin Spear.

what do you say?

It would have helped if you said you don't like Spyderco when you said you were looking for a "regular/general use" folder. It's a pretty obvious choice.

Get the Grip. It's an excellent knife. The other ones I'm not too familiar with, but their tacticool names make me think they are far less functional/practical than the Grip.

Or just get that CS Hold Out. You like it. I don't see how its hollow grind is gonna make it difficult to sharpen...people have been sharpening hollow ground knives on stones for quite a long time. Seemed to do OK.

Great! It sounds like that was the knife that "worked" for you and you got it. In the end that is all that matters. Congrats and enjoy! Post some pics when you get it!

thank, I will.
I just needed some general idea, someone to point me in the right direction. there are literally hundreds of different knife models...
