Hello fellow blade Lovers, and OMG I broke my BK2 !!

Ulf has them, they should come up any moment.
So for the full story, i bought it mid june, for this backpacking canoe trip i just finished, and on the very first day i found this real nice tree branch to make small fire logs out off, so i dragged it back to camp and started chopping at it to make nice lil logs. im about done with the first piece and i hear a smal tock. i look at it and the blade seems to lift right after the handle. i see the CRACKED METAL! the lord as left me! so i had to finish with my girlfriends Beargryll ultimate pro for the duration of the trip...
thats about it

:eek::eek::eek:

When you take the photos, can you take a macro of the broken steel, not just a profile of the broken blade?

In utter disbelief. Sorry for doubting you SebBush . One of the last blades i ever thought i'd see broken.

My apologies. Absolutely has to be an error in heat treat. No doubt in my mind that the folks over at Kabar will get you fixed up right away.
Let us know how it goes please.

Well, all I have to say is, S**t happens, no knife, I repeat, no knife, is indestructible, HI kuks which are almost 1/2" thick break!!! The BK2 is about as indestructible as it gets, I say, When you get the replacement, beat it twice as hard, twice as long! you will not break two, I promise.

:)

same for me i was debating the bk2 and the esee 5. because, it seemed like both these knife were tank like, i only chose the bk2 because of the price of the esee 5. wich if i wanted mircata and a better sheeth i could always buy it and it woudnt have cost more than the esee. As for the limited waranty... you have to look real hard to find a broken bk2, so for me that was it.

I believe him, I kinda think you all are being jerks, as difficult as breaking any BK is, I wouldn't call anybody I liar just because he doesn't have pics.

Come on mountainmist - we're snarkin' the guy just because we're pic whores. No offense meant by me for sure and I never took it that way from any others either. If someone breaks a BK, as bad as we feel for the guy, we still want to see it.

I doubt that KA-BARs HT is faulty. Maybe a drop of water, or a little bump while in HT, or ANYTHING, anyway, this is definitely a fluke. Don't worry about the next one.

to add insult to injury, the task was completed by a beargrilly...oh my :D

And I remember another BK2 that broke around the same spot, If I recall correctly it is the area of the differential heat treat from blade to handle.

that BG Pro actually did the job for those 4 days, used the firerod and the blade sharpener, it was never razor sharp but hey it did what we needed to do.

very few BK2s of old ever broke.

now that KaBar is making them about 1000x as much, there are bound to be bad ones...

was the OP batoning? with the hulk? what?

personally, i feel the handle cutouts are "wrong", but nobody asks me anything, so...

a full-tang knife shouldn't break like that.

at least keep the BK2 and BK9 that solid. that's my thought.

anyway, KaBar should take care of the OP as long as it's not deemed abuse. they can smell angle grinders a mile a away ;)

Question......do all Becker BK Knives have Skeleton type handles ?

HARDBALL
I am no Beckerhead expert, but I do believe all of the BK&T knives that have been made by Camillus and Ka-bar have skeleton handles.
I have an old BK&T Brute made in Effingham, Illinois that has a solid handle.
I'm sure if you ask this question over on the Becker BK&T discussion area, you will get a better answer than mine.

HARDBALL

All of the current ones do. Not sure about the other makers but I would think so.

I can see why some people would look down on skeletonized tangs but IMHO a solid exposed tang would screw up the balance and shift the weight back into the handle. Considering how rare they break I prefer the skeletonized tang.

well, they used to all be solid, through the years, and finalized with KaBar, most of them are more weight forward skeletonized

even so, very few break, considering the abuse they get

i still like thick, convexed, solid tang knives, but what do i know? :D

Sure glad my esee 4 doesnt have a skeletonized tang under its handle.....:D

And yes Im joking. I know that it was a fluke and not the construction
