Hello, I am new, and my real name is David

So, all I do is draw it out, scan it, use photobucket to host it, and ask people to look it up on photobucket? That is both simple and intuitive, let's hope it is easy enough to use. I am a decent drawer, with so much imagination, I'm surprised my head has not exploded yet. Anyway, I'll sketch it now and see how easy it is to work photobucket. If it is simple, expect the prototype tonight, or morning, or whatever time it is for you all. Peace out.

This thing?

Honestly, I have a feeling that the kamis would make something real close to an Uncle Bill Especial/Ultimate Fighter/Movie model out of that. Might want to look at those models and is they flip your lid, it might just be easier to order one of them.

Really? Hmm, that is unfortunate, Cpl Punishment. I was really counting on them making an exception, but if you think so, then I submit to your experience. How about, after this college class is over, I scan my prototype and introduce you all to it, just for kicks? It is disproportionate, but don't judge it on that, I tried my best and am no blade master. Like I might have said before, I don't much have the know-how to draw a proper blade. Thanks, everyone, and peace.

No, no, I don't mean to discourage you. BY all means give us your impression.

Just looking at the lines of it, that's how I see them adopting it.

Okay. Anyone who wants to see my prototype and my brainchild weapon, go to photobucket, and search for a username called OneWingedGuardian. Then, do some snooping around until you find two pictures on lined paper of weirdo weapons. Those are my babies. The brainchild weapon is an axe, a splitter, and something else put together. Go ahead and call it impractical, its not like I put anymore than 40 seconds of thought into it. But I thought the handle configuration was pretty cool. Of course, I will update it, give it a slightly curved, grippy handle and eliminate one of splitter wedges so it can be pounded on one side with a spare bit of ply wood. As you can imagine, my brainchild will be a rather stinky weapon, should it ever become a reality. Which I highly doubt it will, unless someone is willing to put the time and effort into ripping me off and putting out that it was their dumb idea in the first place. I am, to change the subject, a relatively decent artist, and rather prolific, so if anyone needs to express their own ideas, you can use me as your artistic conduit, assuming you don't cultivate your artistic talent like I do mine. Okay. Peace out all of you. Keep being awesome.

Hope you don't mind me posting them. (In the future, if you want to post them, just run your mouse over the picture, a pop up menu appears below the picture, go down to "IMG code" and click. Then come into the posting window her and hit CTRL+V to paste the code, and the pictures will show.)

Welcome to the HI and forum, Gorog

Is anyone familiar with Laci Szabo's tactical golok design?

As far as goloks go, I'd stick with my kelapa:

GolokKelapaHoneysuckle20100604_sm.jpg

Besides being made by folk who know their goloks, it costs almost a sixth what you'd pay for the Szabo site one. Granted, the kelapa does lack the, tacticlol quality. :D

For heavy chopping, I'll stick with me Sgt. Khadka Bonecutter.

Yeah, I know what you mean, it does look impractical. But at the same time...I don't know. All appears to be quiet on the western front. Apparently, no one cares enough to even comment on my two drawings...sniff sniff...no one loves me...JUST KIDDING. Anyway, thank you for the advice, I will certainly consider it, CS Graves.

OK Gorog.

I think that the guys for the most part don't want to offend you.

There's a reason those types of "fantasy" blades are made much (though you may want to look at the Bud-K catalog, they have a lot of that stuff. Problem is, it's usually 420 stainless and made for hanging on a wall, not using).

They aren't real practical. Fo one, they will be nearly impossible to sharpen in the field. For another, all the pointy stuff makes them look really mean, but it's also things that get caught on stuff and hamper your draw and swing.

Another problem is that, while having a sharpened back edge like on your drawings and some of the blades you've linked to may be good in a fight, they don't have a lot of use in the field and can outright hamper some activities (such as using the blade as a drawknife to peel bark and shavings). Knifes with two sharpened edges are also illegal in many places, and I'd bet Delaware is one of those places.

If you look at historical blades, very few have such a fantastical design, and those that do, like the kris dagger had their shapes as much for religious and ceremonial reasons as any functional reason. Plus, it's very difficult for such shapes to be made by a blacksmith. Even in the modern day of waterjet cutting and CNC machines, such blades are not used for combat much, if at all. People who are into blade martial arts who design their own "perfect" blade often come up with very plain-looking, deceptively simple, blades.

If you want something with a flair, and that is also a very good knife, despite a lot of internet bashing, go to www.hogcult.com and look at some of the blades Jerry Busse has made (he also has a forum here on blade forums). Now, MOST of his knives are out of production (he only makes one or two models at a time), so if you want one that is out of production, the main source is the exchange here on BF, and the prices can range from several hundred to over $2000 for a single blade. I won't knock him, he makes first rate blades that do live up to the hype for the most part.

Now, to be honest, most of what I do, a kukri does it better. Even though he came out with a kukri like object, the ones I hefted didn't have the balance and feel that HI ones do, and I didn't care for them (which is a shame, I was really looking forward to an INFI kukri I couldn't live without) BUT, a lot of guys do like them, so. . .

If you are after "street cred" with wild designs, most people who know what they are doing will give the kukri respect (and most who don't know what they are doing for that matter). In Afghanistan, it's fairly well known that the Al Quaeda terrorists are scared spitless of the Gurkha and their kukri. Not to mention they have a long history under the Brits (the Gurkha that is) of being very brave fighters and their kukri are legendary. Recently there was the posting about a Gurkha (retired I do believe) that took on 40 train robbers in a 20 minute knife fight with his kukri -- and won.

BUT, I don't want to force you into anything. There's all kinds of knives out there, and any specific forum you go to will be particularly passionate about the brand there.

I appreciate your informative response, Cpl.

I think that Gorog has creative talent (don't we all to some extent, the key is tapping into it...),
and although his drawings here may not be very practical, they remind me of "concept cars"
or what fashion designers first sketch up, to explore (and later refine) concepts.

When I first heard the expression "form follows function" during my high school years,
I didn't understand it (but then, I didn't have access to Google, either :) )

I suggest that Gorog dives into his passions and learns everything about them that he can.:)

that was well said Cpl -- something else to consider - even if you didn't care about how practical the knife is or how good it can do its job - (cutting)

any maker that is any good is going to have one hell of a time grinding all the different edges and the price will go up exceedingly with each edge that needs to be ground simply because it is a lot of work

there is an older Japanese man named Kiku Matsuda his are ground by hand and there are some that are odd shapes but very expensive - from 300 dollars to 1,5000 and some even more

the link is for you too see the ideas and the price below them

http://www.japaneseknifedirect.com/KikuoMatsudaKnife.html

I have a neck knife from him that is sweet but new it runs 200.oo i got it second hand for cheap

if you look through his you will notice the more edges to grind the higher the cost.

and as Cpl said function is important - sometimes a inexpensive well made standard looking knife will out perform and expensive fancy knife

Okay, thanks guys, that is all I wanted to know about, your opinions. I am not offended or anything, I knew it would be a long shot to make anything of my design practical, which means, basically, that I design rather impractical weapons. You see, I am writing a book, and the hero is basically a Destroying Angel, so he has a lot of time on his hands and can sharpen anything he wants to. But, his favorite weapon is a kukri that he forged for himself. Thanks again, everyone.

Well, then design away. Most fantasy books or comic books would be a lot less interesting if they weren't filled with completely impractical accoutrements!

I'm particularly fond of the "armor" that most females wear that somehow protects them while covering nearly none of their skin!

One thing to consider (coming from a completely amateur fiction writer myself), is you can often make something look wild by just adding a few subtle curves or more to the point, extensions to curves that are already there, to give something a really wild look, but still be within the realm of possibility.

BTW, I agree with Steve Tall, dive into your passions and see what you can do. As for having a real blade made, we've given you plenty of advice already.

If we can help any, just let us know.

Thanks everyone, particularly the good advice from Cpl Punishment, who was also kind enough to forego my annoying, self centered presumption that no one liked my drawings because no one commented on them at the time, to tell me the truth about them, no sugar coat necessary. That shows a depth of character, to me, that a lot of people on other forums seem to lack. So, good for you Cpl Punishment. Anyway, has anyone heard of the WJQ-308 Chinese Military Shovel? It looks like a rather expensive gimmick to me, though I nonetheless want it rather badly, for some reason. Thanks everyone, you are all cool to me, for putting up with my erratic, strange, yet typical Asperger's/MDD stuff. Then again, I should probably be taking more of the blame, should I not? Disorders and syndromes do not make us who we are, do they? I don't know, this seems to be getting too deeply philosophical for a site called Bladeforums, but, once again, what do I know, besides random tidbits that intrigue some people and put off others? Too many questions. Peace be with you all (that phrase does NOT mean I am a theist, theism is a big no-go for me.)

Yeah, I've seen the Chinese shovel.

IMO you're better off with one of the folding military e-tools (entrenching tools, i.e. shovel) from WWII - Korea era that had the folding blade and a pick on the back. As far as the can opener and all that, buy a good multitool to go with your shovel and you're all set. Buying both a surplus shovel and multitool will cost the same, or less, than that Chinese shovel and you'll have better tools.

That's my take, anyway.

BTW, I think there's a "syndrome" for having a compulsion to be bluntly honest and call things as you see them and have no tact whatsoever (everything is a syndrome these days), but I forget what it's called. I try to be too disorderly for them to classify my disorder. ;)

Yeah, you're probably right, and yet, I can't shake the feeling that someday I will need to make julienne fries or cut through cast iron/wood/pvc/laminate, and that shovel would be just the thing. I can't get it, even if it as good an idea as sliced bread, because my dearest mother thinks two cold steel special forces shovels are enough. I only want it because it would allow me to help people really well while at the same time raising my, quote on quote, "MAN-STYLE" to ungodly levels. Just kidding, I highly doubt I would be anything higher than an idiot if I carried a shovel around town for anything besides digging holes, which I absolutely LOVE to do, by the by. Maybe HI could make me a super awesome E-tool or an actual shovel. Then again, I was not thinking about how the kami's might feel. Would that be offensive to them, asking such specialized people to make a common tool like a shovel? I don't know. By the way, whatever syndrome you are talking about, I probably have a lot of the symptoms. I tried asking a girl to be my friend, when I really wanted to be her boyfriend, and it definitely showed. Very little to no tact whatsoever. But, correct me if I wrong, my life must be pretty old, pretty boring news right about now to the all readers of this thread. Why is that? Because I do not do anything with my life. Purpose. That is what this life of mine needs. And little to no obsessions, because I obsess about almost everything now, especially when it comes to relationships of any kind. That...is a gigantically horrible aspect in my life that MUST be fixed for anything of any permanence to happen to me, especially concerning relationships towards the opposite sex. I tend to freak out girls with my 'intensity', otherwise known as my obsessive tendencies. Which then leads to news that I am 'creepy', and then I feel intensely awful about myself, which leads to bad things happening. But I will shut the heck up now, because I have probably expended the audience I had to my impetuousness. For one who proclaims to have so much control, I do not control myself very well. Shutting up now. Peace everyone, and rock on.
