Hiya!,

So- Valentines' day approached and I am hoping to surprise my Husband with a knife. Unconventional though it may be, my husband recently lost his go-to carry knife. (A Sog of somesort.)

While my funds are limited to roughly $100 (Which puts most Sog knives out of reach, to my knowledge), I am hoping to get him something nice for the price bracket. I like the idea of U.S. or German made. (Bear and Sons, Hen and Rooster are names even I am familiar with.)

And just to make things that much more difficult IF POSSIBLE a damascus style blade.

Are Ka-bar still good? I know they went to Taiwan for at least some of their manufacturing. Case? Remington puts out a butterfly knife I liked the look of?

Help! D:

Thanks! :)

Updates: The knife he lost and I am hoping to replace had been a Sog folding knife that he could open with one hand. I don't know if this was by design or if he'd used it to the point something had worn loose. It was the knife he ALWAYS had in his back pocket. The one he'd trust to get through a seatbelt in the event of a carwreck but ALSO the one he'd pull out if he needed a box or package opened.

What about a Damascus Leek, made in USA and around $80?

Look into Great Eastern Cutlery (GEC) knives. Very high quality knives that are made in small batches in the United States. You can get him a decent folder for around $90.

Case knives are good too. Kabar folders are okay, but most are made in Taiwan.

Avoid Remington Cutlery like the plague, they outsourced 99.9% to the worst factory in china. Ditto for Smith&Wesson Knives and most gun conpany brand knives.

What does he usually use a knife for? Do you want a traditional style (two hand open) or a modern style with features like one hand open, a lock, and a clip? If you can narrow down what you're looking for you're going to get some better advice, otherwise everyone is just going to shout out their own personal favorites..

Y'know - that one is the one I keep coming back to! :) It has kind of been the standard- the Kershaw Leek.

There is no better 2nd choice. Spyderco paramilitery 2 is all you need, although you will have to add $20 or so more to your budget.

Sometimes personal favorites aren't so bad - especially since I am running under the assumption that most people here are more knowledgeable than I! :) That being said, he likes the sort he can tuck into his pocket. I believe his previous was one hand open. The knife he lost and I am hoping to replace was his go-to emergency knife. The one that he kept in his back pocket, could cut through a seatbelt in the event of a carwreck but was ALSO the beater he'd pull out for opening parcels and what-not.

If you visit one of our supporting dealers like Knife Center or Blade HQ, you will find quite a few SOG knives ARE in your price range.
It sounds like he had an assisted opener, look at the SlimJim or Trident.

Good luck!!

I would suggest the Kershaw Link (model 1776) in damascus available for under $100 and USA made! Assisted opener with a flipper instead of a thumb-stud and a nicely comfortable handle.

If you're willing to increase your budget a little then Mcusta knives may be an option. They use 33 layer damascus over a VG10 (good steel) core, are made in Japan and generally well respected. I'm not exactly sure what price they run over there because things are a bit different here in Australia :)

Also, welcome to the forums!

Sounds like he had a SOG Slipzilla. If not take a look at the Victorinox (SAK) Trekker (one hand opener with various useful tools) and well within your budget. I have both and MUCH prefer the Trekker (since it has not pocket clip, so I carry it in a belt pouch).

Forgot to mention. Look at Victorinox Sentinel: it is a single blade, one hand opener with a pocket clip.

Spyderco knives are great! Benchmade Griptilian or another. Kizer knives.

Take a look at the knives for sale here on the exchange, you can find really good deals!

That sort of makes me wonder if it was a non-assisted SOG with an arc lock. I could understand someone thinking something might have worn loose because the blade swings pretty freely with the lock button pulled back. Do you recall if he would sling the blade open and closed? If that's the case, you might want to take a look at the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian and Spyderco Manix Lightweight. Different sized knives but I think either would make your budget. Or you could stick with a SOG that functions similarly.

If it was a SOG there's a good chance it was pretty light. I'd hate to recommend something that's too heavy and cumbersome for him.

Take a look at the Spyderco Delica. I'd trust it for just about any task. It's slim, lightweight, solid and reliable. Made in Seki City Japan. Sort of Japan's version of Solingen or Sheffield.

You can also get the Native 5 or Manix 2 lightweights from Spyderco for under $100. Both are made in Colorado. I'd probably get the Native as s35vn is a far superior steel to CTS-BD1.

A Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight is another to look at if thumbhole openers and lockbacks are okay. (They're more than just okay for my tastes. They're a couple of my favorite design choices)

You were quicker than me with the Native recommendation, T.L.E. Sharp. I got one a few days ago, and it is a great knife. Worth the money over the Delica, IMHO and the Delica has been one of my favorites for a long time.
