Hey guys and gals. Here is a chance to help design a new knife from a reputable maker. I can't give that away just yet but as of right now, you can participate in helping with the design process. From what I've heard so far, I'd say it will be very practical and potentially very popular.

Check it out here

I'm opening this up to non-KF members since all I care about is a good discussion to create a great knife. You are all welcome on the "other forum" and your ideas for this project are most welcome.

When I think Camp knife, I think one with a blade about 7"-8" long and 3/16" -1/4" thick.
Something that can handle battoning and a little chopping but not so big it can't hack through some steaks and chop a little salad !!!

To me the Swamprat Camp Tramp was perfect !!!

Knives along these lines would be fine for Camp use...

I am with the ones who consider a camp knife something like 4 inch blade that slices well. This because I carry chopping tools for chopping. Like hatchets and saws. My camp knife is for slicing food and meat.

7in blade with a large choil can take on any task
really if you were backpacking weight is a concern
a small blade with hatchet is just more weight
a 7in blade is versitale and can handle any task

I recently had the knife in the link below made to what I like - very simple...

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=530943

1/8” thick high carbon steel with 4 1/8” blade and 4 1/8” handle.
Scandi grind for versatility and easy sharpening.
Rounded handle with taper front and back to prevent slippage and blisters for extended use.
No gaurd.
Squared spine for firesteel and sparking with sharp rock.

something that has a stout, 5 or 6" blade, full tang, no guard with carbon steel.

For back packing and hiking, what is wrong with a plain Mora? Hell, how about a decent 4-5" quality kitchen utility knife?

I have pondered this many times, since I do a fair amount of backpacking and dayhiking. I'd like to see something more dedicated to backpacking since you already have a heavy pack on your back.
It should have a 3-4" blade, be around 1/8" thick, should be light enough to carry for several days with a heavy pack on your back, but stout enough to rely on in an emergency. High flat grind for great slicing and food prep, full spine thickness for batoning, and some wood prying. The Charley May OSK1, maybe slightly smaller looks like the perfect overall shape. http://charlesmayknives.blademakers.com/
Or this one by Martin Knives, but flat ground http://www.knifeforums.com/uploads/1202601033-Mil-Surv_satin.jpg
Another thing that would be great is a sheath that could be mounted to the shoulder strap of a pack, that would be so handy on the trail.

My ultimate hiking/backpacking/camping knife would be something like this but with a full tang, carbon steel, and natural handles.

This thing is a little old so needs a little tweek here and there, but something along these lines would be perfec'. 1/8" thickness, 8.5" OAL, 4~" blade made out of a good HC steel.

One of the mods would be to make the butt a little less pointy. I might make some more up-to-date drawings... :p

Looks very much like my Fallkniven F1 with a slightly modified grip:thumbup: looks good

That's a good thing! The F1 blade shape with a Micarta handle would be perfection. Nice design.

The bottom knife in wabajack's post is my favorite so far. If you read the original post, the handle was to be a Kephart style. This is nice but I'd love to see a different handle on this blade. 4" blade, 4.25" handle, 5/32" thick by 1" wide or 1.25" wide. Nice design so far.

Kev, that design you sent me really looks to be a good choice. I still like SgtMike's idea, sodbuster/Kephart. I may just have to make one to see what it would be like. :D

Scott,

I like the sodbuster idea too. No matter what, it is fun to be in on the design process. I'm sure some other quality ideas will be exposed and eventually developed for all to use and enjoy.

Kev, I posted these "over there" also.

Basically a Fox River with a Kephert handle. I added a small thumbramp on the drawing, similiar to the one on the Bravos. I thought about raising it some and adding a wider chord, like Mr. Ritter's griptillians.
