One ACME anvil right out of the Sears and Roebuck catalog. It does have a 1/2" thick face.

Says "ACME" on side.

I cant see any other markings on her. No numbers etc. Dont mean they aint there because it pitted up pretty bad.

Think She will live? Whats your diagnosis Doc. Go ahead and let me have it. I can take it! Ill send you a few gnutes for downpayment.
Ill post up some hammers soon.

sweet - have you tried to shoot it off a stump yet ?
I was thinking about putting an airbag from an auto underneath it and see how high I can blow it!:D My luck it would come right straight through the roof of the house!

Dude you need some steel toed thongs or something. I hurt just looked at heavy and sharp pointy things and your bare feet.

Looks identical to one I have. 85 pounder. See pic.

Observe pic closely.
1. The anvil sets on a "stump" made from 2 X 12s with 4 X 4s added to the inside for weight. 1/8 X 1 steel bands running around the outside, lag bolted down for stability when hammering.
2. I like to move this particular anvil from the smithy to the gun shop, so it is not fastened down hard. Notice the shaped piece of 2 X 4 mounted with deck screws between the feet. On both sides and a section of straight board fastened at the rear of the anvil to trap it on 3 points. Lift straight up and the anvil moves.
3. Had to add some new red paint. Makes it look better and adds "professionalism" to your swagger.:D
4. Git thee an old jack handle and make an anvil dog such as the one in the pic holding that home made rifle barrel down. Fits into the pritchel hole. Will send a pic & dimensions if needed. Great third hand.

If your hardy hole is buggered up beyond the upper lips, or is too big, sleeve it. I have some sleeves hanging in the smithy and may have one that will fit yours. The rounded off lips can be of service, so don't worry too much about them unless gigantic chunks have been chipped off. Strike the bed with a hammer, not hard, but enough that it rings. If it rings clear, good. If it rings and has a dull vibration, the weld may be giving away. If there is no clear ring, the anvil may be dead and your arm will get tired from pounding. Dead anvils with steel plates can be repaired. This method does work: Take anvil to a river and be on the bank. Put long chain on anvil and secure it so it can be drug and the chain not come off. Build fire. Now build BIGGER fire with anvil in fire. Add wood. Add more wood. Heat anvil until it is red hot. Looks orangish all over. Very quickly pull anvil into and completely under the water. Do not get too freakin' close to the -------- as you will not recover quickly. Amputation, skin grafts, and etc. are painful things, you understand. Wait a few minutes. When cooled off completely, pull anvil out with assistance of 2-3 friends and between beers, dry off and cart home. Bed should be hard now. Table remains soft though and the bick, "beak", or "horn" should be hardened, too. You need a couple different hardies, a regular and a cut-off. Be sure they will fit the hardie hole properly. Not too loose.

Now for the important part of this note. When your anvil is mounted on it's stump, chunk, block, or stand, the knuckles of your clenched fist should just graze the bed of the anvil when you stand up straight along side it. No more. No less. The anvil needs to "fit" you. Comprende, amigo?

Can't tell for sure. Take close up pic of upper right corner area of anvil bed (towards horn from pritchel hole). Want to see if there is a 1/4" radius on edge. There should be if you are right handed. You would want it on the left side were you left handed. This is for bending bars, rods, etc. to 90 degrees, etc.

I had no idea there was so much to know about an anvil.

Many have accused me of just falling off a turnip truck, I'm starting to think maybe they are right.

Doc, would you tell kamidog to wear shoes when he's burning his anvil and dragging it down the river drinking beer with his friends please?
He don't seem to listen to me and I don't want the stump he mounts his anvil on to be attached to the end of his leg ya know?

Safety first and all that jazz.

What a fortune I could make if I could still get those anvils at 9 1/2c a lb. that is an amazing advert DocT Love it.

And I already know what Bookie can make with that Anvil of his... can't wait to see what tricks he can teach Kami-Dog to do with the one he just got. Is that another dumpster dive find N-Dog? If so musta been a dumpster diving team event LOL.

As I recall the kamidog anvil went through the fire, was laying out in the weeds. I don't recollect the history on it.

I wouldn't think that fire would have got that anvil hot enough to lose it's stuff but guess it kind of depends how much stuff was burning around it I reckon.

If he does the fire, drag into the river with his beer drinking buddies, we'll definitely want video of that for sure.

Might do the river trip anyway:D Sounds like a load of fun. My dad had this anvil since at least 1950's maybe before. Its been in the family for a long long time. It was in my shop when it burned down so I know it got pretty dang hot. It was in an old trailer house so im thinking it probably got flash heated but burned out pretty quick. Trailers dont usually burn very long. The scrap metal recyclers tried to take it along with some other vagrancy so I had to guard it pretty closely for a while. Its safe now tho.
That is a cool ad DocT ..another Doc:eek: You dont have those little dolls with pin stuck in them do ya? You names not Steve is it? We have another doc here...well. hes a good doc;)

The hardy hole has a few chips and the pritchel hole a small one but they look much better than some ive seen?

A half inch piece of stock fits in there nicely. I was going to try to make me one of those anvil dogs.

You were right about the radiused edge. This one is radiused on the horn side so that would be someone bending left handed? Makes sense. Since im right handed would it be a good idea to round off the other side to kinda even out them chips or just let it wear down as is?

Well just from my experience of beating on things it may be alright as far as the weld goes? It does ring for about five seconds or maybe more. Maybe thats when my hearing goes out too tho. It rings considerably more at the hardy and pritchel hole maybe cause there is less meat underneath? Hmmm? my ears are ringing now and the anvil is in the shop?

Is that "stump" you made solid? Completely filled in with 4x4's? I have plenty o scrap wood to make one of those. I like it! Heck might make two. ...nah. I kinda like my big half burned cedar stump in the living room.

Thanks for your wise words Doc. Ill get right on making me a real stump.

And yes Bawanna. Video of that scene would be mandatory!

The anvil will ring near the pritchel hole for just the reason you mentioned and since it rings, no need to make a trip to the river, so send me all your Guinness and Butterfingers you was going to consume with the guys. The radius is there alright and that's good, but grind one carefully on the other side. I had to do that on a 285 pounder I have. It sets on a very large solid piece of squared tree trunk which sets in it's own metal stump stand.

The 3 numbers found on anvils tells you the weight. Trouble is, most folk can't decipher the code. Anvils are weighed in Hundreds Weight, (no misspelling here) not straight pounds. Hundreds weight is 112 pound, O.K.? Here's the code info, so save this:

Typically the hundreds weight markings are seperated by dots but not always. These figures were stamped into the finished anvil and are often not very deep. The first figure to the left is hundred weights which equal 112 pounds. The next figure is quarter hundred weights which equal 28 pounds and the last number is whole pounds. The three are added together for the total weight. Examples:

1 · 0 · 16 = 112 + 0 + 16 = 128 pounds

2 · 1 · 3 = (112 x 2) + 28 + 3 = 255 pounds

2 · 2 · 25 = (112 x 2) + (28 x 2) + 25 = 305#

The second place is never over 3 so if you have difficulty reading the number it is a 1, 2 or 3. The last place is never over 28 and most often is a single digit or less than 20.

The weight of these is usually +/- 1 pound when measured on an accurate modern scale.

SO. . . how did the English weigh anvils and figure the marking?

EASY, on a balance scale using hundred weight, quarter hundred weight and pound weights.

I use a real stumps for the swedge block and bick iron. No reason except that's what I had available at the time and WEIGHT IS YOUR FRIEND.

Man! I was packin up ready to jump in the cold spring fed river. Ill chain up a bunch of rocks or something and just go through the motions. Should be fun anywayz. Ill save you some Guinness and a few butterfingers anyway.
Intersting weight codes. Ill look around again and see what I can find. Being very familiar with a 96 pound jackhammer and bags of portland cement I can tell ya that it is about the same weight as yours. 82# feels right. When i grind off that radius ill clean it up some and maybe the numbers will show up? 112.28.1 Got it!
Metal stump stand with stump on top surrounded by wood frame strapped and lag screwed...Got it:thumbup: I do have plenty of stumps:D

Kamidog, here is a photo that shows my swedge block on a full stump. Next to it is my 285 pound anvil, on the square chunk of wood. Look closely at the bottom and you can just make out part of the steel stand that the chunk rests on.

You know I think if we really want to rake in the big bucks for the Kami funds we should auction that hat!

That's a wicked cool hat.

Either that or a date with Cutie Curls. That ought to be worth large too ya know. I'm not staying out of that one though, conflict or not, in to win on that one.

Doc T, Can I get you to send me a jpg of your anvil advert, please?

Kamidog, do you know the proper way to pick up an anvil to carry it?

UhhhGG? I dont know? I grab it one hand on the horn and one on the other end where the hardy hole is. Same way I carry my wife:D How many points do I get for that question? Pretty sure I got it wrong:confused:
