Bladeforums search thingy is either on the fritz or I am not smart or stupid enough to use it or something. It could be AOL, AOL is always an easy thing to blame computer woes on...because they deserve it...or my dying machine...

Anyway, I need all the information I can get on Bob Cooper's little Penrith-like Survival Kit and the original double edged, chisel ground knife that came with it.

I have Doug Ritter's article on it and I also have, somewhere, the original Tactical Knives article on it...someone said they were going to give me their original for review and I just want to peruse everyone's thoughts positive and negative on it.

TIA - CIAO!

someone gave a google tip a while back - XXXXXX site:bladeforums.com

xxx being your subject matter. On a search for cooper survival kit nothing pertinent came up, sorry.

In the Service & Support forum, there is a Sticky: Search Engine FAQs & Tips By Quiet Storm which can improve your results.

However in this case, Bob, and Cooper, and survival, and kit are all such common words that it is going to be hard to find. I just tried using Advanced Search, but didn't find any obvious threads with it.

I would try studio's method, too, but depending on how far back any BF post was, it may have been lost in a periodic housecleaning.

Have you tried Don Rearic's website? He has all kinds of great stuff on survival kits.

What is all of this dingalingery? :D

I was interested in people's opinions more than anything, I gots me the root materials on it from the old TK article and Doug's site.

I was much more interested in other people's opinions of the small double edged knife Cooper included in the original kits.

(Is "ship" serious? :D )

Don, that is a neat little knife, it reminds me of all the cool pics on your site based on OSS designs. I would wager that blade is more than likely a direct descendant of such knives, and I mean in terms of direct lineage. It's likely the oss and the sas from the time of world war two, just included those lapel daggers and shivs into their survival kits. But what do you think? I imagine the knife was originally designed and incorporated into the kit as a combat weapon. You follow me? What you have is an evolutionary process with that little knife as a vestigal weapon. A throw back to lapel and thumb daggers. now as the years went by, maybe a few holes got poked into it, to make it more true to survival in the bush, making it adaptable as a spear head. Just a theory but I hope you might see my point. In any event having a nice piece of sharpened steel like that is way better than the doug ritter "scalpel" that comes with his kit. I know you always should have your edc knife, but well, its good when a kit includes a knife too.

Yeah, I read the material/thoughts on the Aboriginal Origins of the design but it really looked like a lot of the thumb daggers I have researched in the past. There is simultaneous evolution and all of that we have to consider as well...

But I agree with you.

As for the scalpel blade in Doug's Kit, well, if you want to make something affordable, that is the way things are going to go. I think one of the little folding razors would be much better, however.

Thanks for the link and the thoughts...

Yes , I thought so to, but I think we are getting closer, it would be nice to have the original if you are going to do a story on it.
