Help me choose a knife for a 13-year-old grandson.

Lots of good recommendations.

But the real answer depends on his personality and interests. Does he fish? Hunt? Is he interested in history or the military? Does he like working with wood? Carving? Bushcraft? Cooking?

He lives in Henderson county (edneyville) North Carolina. So he's pretty much outdoorsy. I'm leaning towards a buck 110. Or a nice case I'm not sure yet. Although I am leaning towards the buck . His personality is very mature and he's not a stupid kid that you normally see these days. He is very interested in cutlery I think I have maybe created a new knife nut. Poor kid don't know what's in for him. I must admit there are times when I cannot understand what he's saying due to his deep mountain Southern drawl. But we eventually figure it out. His mother told me it's okay I could get him whatever I want to get him.

Had two recent orders for knives for the grandkids:

First: was this group of knives (1 for each grandkid). What makes them special is that they are all handled in antelope bone from one of grandpa's hunts:

Second: was this group of eleven.

Each was to be handled in a different wood. Ironically I had exactly elven different woods in the shop at that time.

In my opinion, at least, there is nothing more “classic woods knife” like a standard buck 110

Agreed decision made it's going to be a buck 110 of some sort. I'm thinking I should get him the classic 110. Engraved with his name and 2023. He'll remember that for the rest of his life and that's the goal. Thank you for the time for all of the advice and opinions. I appreciate it fellas I hope everything's going good on your end

Can’t go wrong there, either.

With him living in North Carolina and interested in the outdoors, I was going to suggest a Kephart pattern fixed blade (Condor, Becker BK62 or ESEE PR4) and a copy of "Camping and Woodcraft". I see that you chose a Buck 110. That is a great choice and sounds like the start of a Nessmuk/Kephart trio, just in case you need suggestions for next year.

Well when I seen him last week I gave him a Kershaw skyline as well as a sak. He's going to have to start cutting grass or shovel snow to buy his own knives from now on. Lord help me I have created a monster. I guess sometime it's good for the younger guys to have something interested other than video games. I didn't want to get him a fixed blade. But thank you for your input it was very nice of you, but I think he's going to be happy with his buck knife

No one has mentioned a SAK?

I'd suggest a 1) an SAK Explorer - just enough tools to be useful, 2) a Gerber multi-tool - which I prefer over Leatherman because of it's slide actino opening mechanism -- again with just enough tools to be useful or 3) a Buck 110 Folder.

What you don't give him this year, give him one of the others in each of the next 2 years.

When he reaches 16, that's when I'd give him something "special."

He is a kid, get him a cool XL Cold Steel Voyager if he already has the Kershaw and SAK and you wanna keep it under 100... Would be a very cool and useful gift!!
