Help me choose a knife for a 13-year-old grandson.

Another vote for a Buck 110--112. Did not know spring assist were not allowed in N. Carolina

I've lived here in the WNC mountains for all my 67 years of life and don't think that's correct but here's a link to the laws and to me it's a bit vague. I have a couple of spring assisted as well as an automatic. When it comes to a 13 year old kid I would be carefull with any knife other than decorative or a multi tool.

He is a kid, get him a cool XL Cold Steel Voyager if he already has the Kershaw and SAK and you wanna keep it under 100... Would be a very cool and useful gift!!
I can't because state law dictates that the blade length has to be four and a half inches or under.

Oh lordy you are so right. But I did the right thing I talked to the police department and got the facts. I got the impression that they really wasn't too worried about knives. But they did tell me that anything with a spring explosive or gravity Force to open the knife was illegal. I still don't understand the whole law there I don't think I ever will. It's too convoluted. Too confusing it also appears to me that North Carolina uses a thousand words to get one simple point across. I too lived in the mountains for quite a while. But on the other side of Asheville the town I lived in was called Marshall. Nobody ever said a word to me out there I shoot my guns I carried my knives nobody ever said nothing but then again I was on my own land. But I agree North Carolina laws need to be streamlined and understandable.

Maybe a 4" Large Voyager? A Spyderco Police or the new LW Native Chief also comes to mind. My mind just drifts towards a useful and tough knife but also one with some "whoa!" Factor for the kid.

Sorry hash, but I'm not a man of money so I really am not interested in any whoa! Factor. That would be a recipe for trouble with the law. I could imagine him showing all of his friends at school or wherever look at this knife I got,
As long as he does his chores he'll be rewarded. If he starts giving his mother trouble that's when his dad steps in and I think you know what happens 😁

Well that kinda sucks for spring assist knife fans in N. Carolina. Yep some stupid laws exist in so many states. Being a southern state still surprises me.

So, the young man already has a nice little pocket knife in the SAK and a quality single blade folder:

Why not go for a multitool? There are many to choose from in about any price point . . .since the mid to lte 1990s, my EDC has been (still is) a Leatherman Wave. You can get him the multi-tool for Christmas and the extra bit set for his next birthday.

I see you've already decided on a Buck 110. Respectable choice. You may want to add a fixed blade to his collection. I'll suggest a Becker BK-16, Mora Kansbol, Russell Green River hunting knife, Buck 119, Buck 192, Cold Steel Master Hunter, or something from one of the BF supporting makers.

I would get him something a little special for about $100 - $125. I would get him a Spyderco Resillence Blue. If you don't know about it here is some info.

I wonder if he'd like to go a different route, like a reasonable cost hatchet and a Mora or other decent fixed blade for outdoors use? Gotta get those skills in early.

I think the 110 is a good choice.
It'll handle most anything he'll need it to do.

A friend of mine is a Sgt with the State Police here in Michigan, and he says when it come to knife laws the only way you're likely to get into trouble regarding a knife is if you're already in trouble for something else.

I suspect that's true most anywhere you're dealing with reasonable people and you yourself are respectful.

Within reason of course.

Another vote for the Civivi Vision. Both neat, and incredibly useful. As a boy, I certainly appreciated Buck-style lockbacks, but without knife experience I couldn’t tell the difference between a crappy $20 thing and a nice 110. Something like the Vision or even the Baklash would’ve blown my mind.

Edit: just noticed you already ordered the 110–he’ll enjoy it!!
