Help Me decide between these 4 EDC

yeah, i had lent and shite cought up in my SOG AEGIS but i sent it in and they fixxed it like-new.. and gave a sharpening too ... its all free from em =p too so good customer care.. service.. but yeah its all good again with sog in my book ..... if u have a problem they'll fix it...

but honestly... i'd go with the delica for EDC in ur case... spyderco knives are sooo well made and ive heard ONLY GOOD THINGS about the delica... i dont own 1... but in the near future.. ill be ordering a delica and an endura.... just not right now since i just ordered an emerson cqc-15 yesterday ;) haha

I got to handle a MIni Grip and a Delica and a Scallion. Loved the opening of the Scallion, so fast. The Mini Grip is about 1/4 or 1/2 inch shorter overall but they felt the same. And I think that was an older Delica as I got the Blue, newer edition which I think is even lighter. Yes, love that Axis locking system, but the width is wider on the handle. The lock on the Delica is on back so dont know if I can close it as fast as the Persistence. I tell you, I am getting impressed with that Scallion

Got the Blue Delica FFG with VG-10 for $52.00 and change shipped. But thinking of getting a Scallion and selling the Persistence. The Mini Grip is nice but seems wider and, well, it was either the Mini Grip or the Delica. I have an offer for a used Mini Grip that, if I get it, would be about as cheap ($35 shipped) as a new Scallion. Wonder if that little tang on the Scallion causes problems like ripping clothing>

Might want to decide on your sharpening system before buying the Scallion. If you decide to go with benchstones or similar, you will probably have to look for other means to sharpen that recurve.

#1 Benchmade Mini Griptilian - would be #2, but you already have a Spydie
#2 Spyderco Delica - doesn't get much better for a light, relatively inexpensive folder
#3 Kershaw Scallion - get a Leek instead
#4 Sog Flash 1 - kinda overpriced/sketchy QC reputation

Since speed seems to be a plus for the OP a Delica 4 with the Emerson Wave would seem to be the clear winner.

There is nothing faster out there.

1. Delica
2. Mini-Grip
3. Scallion
4. Flash 1

The Delica is my almost perfert small EDC blade. I've used it, and the larger Endura, oever the the year and have had no problems. Great blade.

The Mini- grip is a close second to the Delica. I just prefer lockbacks--that's why it's a second choice.

The scallion is great but I have had one Scallion open up in pocket. The other AO kershaws I've used have not had that problem. If you do get a scallion, try the framelock versions.

I was in the same boat as you lol, I recently decided on the delia w/ that new full grind or wut ever..

Its cheap

quality

and light..

Mini Grip with spyderco blade. I like the shape of the blade not necesarily the hole in the blade. But you said you do not like the curve in some other knife blade so the regular mini grip may suit you better, the one with thumb studs and straighter blade geometry. I have the mini grip with the spyderco blade and upswept with the modified reverse tanto on the end, I love it. And as one person stated the axis lock is supurb.

I like benchmade because of their full ambidextrious build. (I am a lefty) With the axis lock and movable clips they are a true right or left hand knife. No the spyderco knives with the lock back are also left or right but the liner locks are not perfect for lefties but I love my Spyderco Cat in Carbon fiber and is actually my favorite EDC. At least I carry it more often then any other. I have a U2 Falkniven I love for in the pocket carry. Those I mentioned are my main rotation if you will. I want to start carrying the U2 more often to see if the edge holds up as good as they say it does. I cut up a large cardboard box today and it will still slice through paper like when it was new.

If spyderco made their paramilitary with left hand build I would be all over it.

You also stated you want light. My benchmade mini grip is very very light. Surprisingly so for its size. It is almost the same as my much smaller Spyderco Cat carbonfiber. I believe those are discontinued and I do not know why because it is a very strong built knife for carbonfiber and for me the perfect size and blade length for EDC. I like the look of the Caly by spyderco.

I'd go with either the Delica, or the min grip. Choose whichever on feels better in your hand. They are both great knives.

Echoing most of what's said here. I have had all 4 at one time and surprisingly still have the SOG due to the fact that I can carry it almost completely invisible with that ultra low clip (and it was a gift from the Wife). The Scallion is a well built tank, but the assisted opening gets old to me and closing it is a pain. The Delica is a standard with really no flaws. I traded my mini-grip and replaced it with a Blackhawk 16707 made by Benchmade. It gives me the same blade length/steel, axis lock but with the edition of full G10 scales so it's much slimmer than the grip.

You did good getting a FFG Deli!

2. Bechmade Mini Griptilian - I own the 556 and it's an EXCELLENT knife, but it shipped extremely dull and this upset me greatly since I have no means to sharpen yet
Fortunately for you, Benchmade's Lifesharp service will put a nice hair-shaving edge on it for you. Call them and explain that the knife is extremely dull straight out of the box before use, and they may swap it for you or at least sharpen it for no charge (not even the $5 return shipping).

I have quite a few folding knives from Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw and other manufacturers.

My father-in-law is not a "knife guy" but he is becoming interested. I wanted to give him his first quality knife. Out of everything available, I am giving him a Benchmade 556 PE Mini-Griptilian.

I think the fact of the matter is that it shouldn't come dull in the first place. Course it wouldn't matter to me since I re-profile all my blades right after I get them. However some people don't have those means.

As far as Delica vs Mini.

I had a Mini first, but after rocking the FFG Delica for a few months I'll never go back. After my buddy had a spring break on his mini while cutting through cardboard... it has made me very weary of the axis lock. I know its solid, but that shouldn't happen. Wasn't even thick cardboard.

Ergos - Mini is nice, but the Delica just feels better in hand. Handle is a bit longer and the thumb ramp + good jimping locks in your hand perfectly. Holding one in the left and one in the right you notice a big difference in ergos. If the Mini had a bit longer handle and more pronounced thumb ramp I think I would like it more (I have medium hands). Course that would totally change the design and may not be the same knife.

Lock - My Delica flips out just as fast as my Mini and both can be closed one handed. Obviously the Mini closes faster, but frankly I'd be more concerned with deployment than closing. My Mini takes me about one second to close, my Delica takes about 1.5 seconds to close... both one handed. Axis lock is far more fun to play with though ha.

Steel - In my own experience of rocking (I seem to like that word today) 154 for six months, it seemed to chip easy compared to other stainless steels especially to VG-10. The FFG Delica is the best slicer I've ever had, it just goes through everything like butter. That includes some one inch thick old dirty rope I had to cut through the other day (serrations? pssh who needs em).

Clip - Both rock, both leave about the same amount of handle sticking out... I think the Delica leaves a bit more exposed on the original clip. I have an STR low rider on mine so that isn't an issue. BTW, as a quick aside... STR kicks ass and if you are thinking about sending him a knife for a clip... just do it, you'll be very happy.

Defending My Life - I'd be more confident in the Delica if I ever had to defend my life with my knife. I'd much rather have something else, like a shotgun. But if I ever found myself in a situation where the only thing I had was my 3" folder I'd be more confident with the Delica. They will both cut, but with the extended handle, thumb ramp and functional jimping I wouldn't worry (as much) about my fingers slipping onto the blade of the Delica. The jimping and low thumb ramp on the Mini doesn't inspire much confidence if you ever had to thrust attack. Again, this is the worst case I'd like to think I'd never get into that situation.

Overall - I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with either knife, but my preference is the FFG Delica.

Mini grip and D4 are both great knives, but I prefer the D4 due to the VG10 steel and the fact that it is so thin.
