Ok guys so help me out. I hate these types of threads sometimes but I really need help with this one. Should I get a southard flipper in about a month and get an Umnumzaan at or before Blade Show. Or I could an Umnumzaan in late march and get a southard flipper at or before blade. The question is what should I get first? Which one do you like better or prefer. Reasons and pics please

cant really compare the two to be honest... get whichever first you like best. cause youll probably end up with both anywho

the southard is probably the hottest knife out at the moment and a big fan favorite
(ikbs, cts204p, ti framelock flipper)

the zaan... well its a crk and youre probaly lusting over it due to that fact which is totally fine.
(s35vn, ti framelock)

my 2cents, the zaan is sexier and i mean down right slutty.... but overall i would honestly have to say the southard is the better edc knife for the money (as most are probably thinking... duh, thats a no brainer ;))

I have both. The 'Zaan is perfectly built, and considerably more "solid" feeling.

The Southard is lighter, quicker feeling, and of course much faster to deploy. The build quality is top notch, and the blade steel is better.

I'd have to say Southard.

maybe you need some knife pron to help you out :)

I totally agree with this..

The steel is what does it for me..

The Zaan is a great, great knife.. but the steel is too soft for my liking. From a resale perspective, you have less downside on the Southard. IMHO.

I am a CRK fan and own six of them. The Zaan is a great knife but I too would say the Southard is worth a look first. Amazing build quality and as mentioned above the blade steel is a step above because of the material as well as with the heat treating. Still love my Zaan but the Southard is dominating my pocket and has not needed even a touch-up. My CRKs see a minor touch-up about every other day to stay shaving sharp.

I just got my southard from the mailman and I can see what the fuss is all about. The knife is extremely nice and well built, much lighter than I thought it would be and the blade shape actually looks a lot better in person. On the other hand, I ordered the startac umnumzaan last month and I sent it back to following morning because I really didn't like it.

I love the large and small sebenza, but the umnumzaan for some reason just didn't do it for me. When it boils down to it the two are VERY different knives, it's weird how you're debating between the two.

The quality of the Umnum will make the southard feel exactly as it should... Cheaper.

Many will try to disagree but, they can do that all day, the Umnum is still a much more refined knife...

Having said this if you have your heart set on a flipper, the Umnum is not a flipper. So the choice should be more about what KIND of knife you want.

If you want to experience CRK quality and tolerances the Umnum is the way to go.

this is the perfect way to put it. to me the zaan will still be a favorite of yours far after the southard fad has died.

Southard, although I think the decision's personal. I can't really appreciate the tolerances on a Chris Reeve knife. Sure, it's nice, but is it really THAT different from my high end Spydercos? I can't see much of a difference, much less for $200-300 more. (My knives are all under $200). So if I had the money, I'd go with a Spyderco. Taichung F&F is amazing, and I love flipper knives. First flipper knife from my favorite company is pretty much a no brainer in my case.

Get the Spyderco. You can flip it all day long without voiding the warranty like CRK.

Very different knives. Having owned both, an Umnumzaan for a week, go for the Southard. Umnumzaan tries to do too much imho.

If you're going to pay a premium price, you might as well buy American.
Plus CRK won't void your warranty if you take it apart.
