Help me Decide! Southard Flipper or Umnumzaan?

I don't have either, so my opinion might be null and void.

But, I got the ZT 560 when it first came out. It was the hot knife of the moment. Everyone bought one. So much so in fact that the price for a used one dropped considerably more than most knives do after it was old news, simply because people had them already. CRK prices tend not to fluctuate very much. Maybe buy the Umnum first, then in a little bit, the price of all these awesome Southards will have fallen.

But, then again, who knows.....?

Angry answer I expect from someone who thinks they're an internet steel master, you and crimsontideshooter should partner up. Get mad.

What in the world died and crawled up your ___. Crimsontideshooter has nothing involved in this and you keep him out. He doesn't to deserve to be treated like that. John is a good guy so you need to be quite. John knows more about steel than you and a ton of other people complaining about S35vn. His tests prove the problems with the edge retention. Please stop the arguing guys though. I don't want this thread to close. Don't troll on this thread.

WHOA LOL, ok done with this thread, you're referring to the guy who doesn't work in the steel industry yet questions the people who helped design steels he frequently critiques based on internet and cutting rope?????? And I'm the troll, OK.

And where can we see samples of your knowledge or experience regarding knives?

You talk about how old knives were just fine yet your collection is a dozen CRKs, popularized by their impeccable tolerances which is only available in the modern age.

I don't think you even realize which end your opinions are coming out of most of the time to be such a hypocrite.

I will get the Umnumzaan in a little bi then ask for the Southard for my b-day in march. That will work out well then. I finally found a good resolution. Thanks for the help guys.

Both all the way! :) really though they are both great knives with each having their own strengths. I've only had my Southard for a week but the edge is holding up very well after as much cardboard abuse I've had time for this week based on my killer work schedule. I've owned CRKs since 2004 and I know that they would not have held an edge for that long no matter if it is S30V or S35VN. No matter though because they have a level of quality which is hard to approach.

The Southard is really what I wanted when I bought a Hinderer XM18 3.5" Gen3 two years ago. The Hinderer was not up to the quality of the Southard (well... except for the clip) so away it went for the same price I bought it for on the secondary market. Didn't make a profit but I was glad to let it go instead of sending it in for repair.

Bottom line is if you have the chance to carry and use both I'm sure one will speak to you.

I just recieved this today and I am absolutely blown away by the quality. My OCD and affinity for CRK knives have made me anal about tolerances and quality. The Southard meets those expectations. Ridiculously smooth action, perfect edge bevels, dead centered blade, ROCK solid lockup, the perfect size, and stunning fit and finish for a full production knife. It is literally worth every cent of the $240 I paid for this, if not more. My only real complaint is the very sharp lockbar cutouts that really dig into my fingers when I open/close the knife. I am going to assume those sharp little peaks will smooth out over time from just edc in the pocket. No big deal. My Umnumzaan remains my favorite knife but the Southard has kicked it out of my pocket indefinitly. My suggestion to the op is to get both and just get whatever is convenient to get first.

edit: Just wanted to add that the Southard literally has the most solid lockup I've ever felt in a 100% production folder. I actually hurt myself cranking on the blade so hard.

I know what you mean about the sharp edges on the cut-out. I also had "flipper-finger" after playing with it so much. It has smoothed out plus I've learned the right action to make it pop out without wearing my finger out. the sharp cut-out edges don't seem to be as much of a problem because I've adjusted to how I hold the knife when opening. One of the best quality production knives I've had in years.

I'd ignore Tim616, he sounds like one of those arm-chair elitists...

I currently own both, and both are really nice. That being said, the Umnumzaan is a noticeably more refined, rugged, and more precisely constructed. The Southard is the best knife I've ever seen at the price point, but I just don't think it's in the same league as the CRK's (I own a small and large Sebenza as well). It is true though that the 204p holds a better edge than the CRK S30v and S35vn, but they are so easy resharpen that it's a moot point (for me anyway).

I'm planning on keeping them both for now, but if I need to unload one, it would definitely be the Southard. Also, and this is probably totally nit-picky on my part, but the grinds on my Southard's blade were a bit off. To be fair, there is a lot of contouring on the blade, and it doesn't cost $400+.

Nope....

Just making a point. ;)

And for the record I don't profess to be anything other than a student. ;)

i didnt read a word of anything you typed as i couldnt stop staring at your avatar...

if restricted to the two, probably the zaan due to the edge geometry of the Southard making any talk about the steel quite pointless.
