Help me enter the RAT world.

The RC-3 is a light and fast knife.

.......... I would go with the RC-3. I carry mine a lot, it is the perfect combination of concealability and blade/handle length.

FWIW, I started with an RC3, plain edge, as my first (and so far, only....) RAT for these reasons and I've not been disappointed. I think an RC4 or Izula is next!

I started with an RC4, followed by an RC3. I wasn't sure about the 3 at first, but its pretty much completely displaced the 4 when I go out. IMO its the perfect size for a knife like this, great slicer, still plenty strong.

 so many post later still cant decide RC-3 or RC-4. I was going the RC-4 way, mainly becuase I have so many of what I consider "tank like" folders that would fill the nitch for any 3 1/2' to 4 inch blade and the use of such blade,That and I would be to tempted to conceal edc the RC-3 which is Illegal where I stay most of the time.Which one I get doesnt matter much anyway as Im sure I will get the other blade in a matter of months.

On another matter very dissappointed ,dealer just sold out of RC-5 plain edge, guess I will have to get the combo edge for now and get the plain edge in the future,Always have to look at the bright side of things:D

Thanks for all the comments and PO's, I couldnt wait to join the forum.....

Having just joined the ranks of happy RAT owners myself, my first was an RC4... and am still waiting to give it a field test. Love how it feels in the hands though... don't think you will be unhappy with any of their products. Just a matter of suiting your needs... I chose the RC4 Plain for an all-around field useage knife and will tailor my collection as my needs evolve. Good luck!

+*+*+*+I know what you mean, i couldnt wait to join either.

knifeworks.com has the hest and about the best price i have seen at $79.

i would start there, i had a 3 first and traded it for hest. got the hest and izula in the mail the same day and have not put the hest down yet and izula sits at home. have since had a 4 and 6. currently have a 5, hest, izula, rat1 and my 3 should be here today.

Welcome !!

The Izula is a great knife to start out with. For a good next middle ground of knife , I'd recommend the 4. You can always go up or down from there, depending on what your needs/likes are. The 4 was my first ,and is still my favorite woods bumming knife.
You cannot go wrong with any Esee product , and service is above and beyond.

I started off with a RC-3 but I'm planning on getting a 4 too. My 6 just came in yesterday so I will probably hold off for a bit.

FWIW, I'd have said IZULA - that's how I started....
but now, with the HEST...my Izzy doesn't see much carry / use anymore.

you guys realize this thread is from january.... just saying... :D:D:D

I'd still recommend the RC3mil to start.... then a 6 or Junglas... ;)

there you have it... your HEST is in stock.. buy that, then the Izula, next the 4, 3, 5, junglas, 3mil, another Izula, then the 6, then??? just fluctuate..

Hi. Ahh go bigger 6 ins. and you have a do it all outdoors knife. Get a 6.. It was my second ESEE and I sleep with it. Enjoy. edgy
I will get the little ones later. A HEST looks like the one.

I would personally go with the RC5 if you are going out into the wild and want a great survival/camp knife. The Izula can make a great secondary knife. You can do little jobs with a big knife but you can't do big jobs with a small knife. The other part is that the RC5 is just a great piece of steel and well done. Just IMO..

Piling on:

I agonized over which ESEE to get as my first. In the end it came down to how much knife for the money. The ESEE-3 seems like it would come in handy more often than the larger options, but the ESEE-4 had just enough extra size that I can keep it in most of my carry bags or on most of my outdoor adventures.

The price difference is not that significant between the 3 and the 4, so the ESEE-4 was the choice for me.

Next up is the Izula Folder

I have been going back and forth between an Izula and an RC-3. Problem solved the Izula II looks like it will be the perfect compromise. I have an RC-6 and it is very hard to beat for a do it all knife.

Yep what he said. A 6 to start. (OK I cheated and my 1st was a Junglas, but thats different.. right.. huh..ok.. Yeah.!):D edgy
*Wonders about 6 pack in the future* DO WE NEED A 6 PACK HERE? ;)

Ive been into hard use knives for a while now, and like all of you probly have enough as of now to last a life time. The never ending eternal pull has yet again led me to make another order.:D

Looking at RAT cutlery for a while and hearing all the good about both there knives and customer service. I have decided to join the world of RAT and purchase a few of there knives. Now im not looking for one knife to do it all, but do realize all of them are capable as such. THE KNIVES , I am dead set on the RC-5 and Izula now knowing the dealer is sold out of H.E.S.T models I have also decided on either a RC-3MIL or RC-4 but cannot decide. Already admiting to myself I will own the whole family some day, this decision isnt that important but would like one of them. The use of knives in question would be possibly be day hikes, fishing ,possibly edc/ depending on law,etc .

I like strength in my knives and weight not being a problem with me so much and OAL bein so similar and knowing I will have both RC-5 and Izula I just cannot choose. Any PO's or experience with knives above will be appreciated. Thanks.

We have the HEST in stock if you are still considering it in the mix.
