I'm getting frustrated with my search for a knife. Here are my requirements:

Budget: up to $300.00
Steel: 154CM minimum
Scales: G10 or better
Blade shape: anything but Tanto
Design: flow through design with steel liners
Lock type: Axis lock or compression lock preferred.
Purpose: EDC

Here is what I've tried so far:

  • SpyderCo Paramilitary 2: too big to pocket comfortably, G10 scales wreck pockets
  • Benchmade Griptilian: a bit too thick but pocketable.
  • Benchmade 940: I ended up returning 2 of these (the 940-1 and 940-2 because of blade centering and axis lock freezing up and I'm not sure to try again).
  • SpyderCo Delica 4: Good size, not a fan of the FRN scales.
  • Benchmade Mini Griptilian: size is great for pocket carry but handle is a bit short in hand :(
I'm currently looking at the Griptilian 556-1 because it has G10 scales, flow through design and a bit thinner than the original Griptilian but I'm not sure how much thinner it's going to feel in the pocket.

Ever tried a Spyderco Manix? Size is comparable to a PM2, but I find it to be more comfortable with the wider profile spreading the mass around. Plus, every blade steel and handle composition imaginable.

I tried a lightweight Manix and the lack of liners and weight freaked me out. I know there is a G10 version out there but I don’t like how Their ball bearing lock looks. I know it sounds silly but it reminds me of a toy.

I have a lightweight too, and the plastic reminds me of a squirt gun I had as a kid, heh. I put on a pair of thick gloves and tried some aggressive testing, and it held up with no problem. There will be no doubt a dozen responses in an hour though, good luck on your hunt!

Haha you just reminded me of what toy. Thanks!

How about the DLT Exclusive 551-1701 Grip? Slightly thinner than a regular grip (.57 vs. .64), M390, and awesome carbon fiber. Love mine.

The g10 versions of the grip are not noticeably thinner than the regular plastic ones. I was on a similar type of hunt a while ago. I ended up with the rift for a while. That would be one worth checking out, although the g10 is a little aggressively textured.

Who makes the rift?

To me it seemed like a beefy 940. The handle seems to be a love it or hate it kind of look though. Great blade shape.

Benchmade rift its also in 154cm I have one, it’s great! Carries like a way smaller blade than it is
