Help me find a good Kukri

That does look like one cool khuk. I have a smaller one with a stag handle and it's quite nice. I definitely considered getting one, but I think I'm done buying khukuris for at least a month or two. I already know I'll be buying a bunch of custom balisongs and bolos in the Philippines in early July.

could you email me or link me to pics of yours? how durable is the antler with chopping? i use my khuks camping.

The one I have is a mini biltong, so it's not made for chopping. I'd go with rosewood for a chopper myself--horn and stag are more likely to crack under heavy stress IMO.

yeah thats what i was thinking, my KH khuk i got in 2003 is starting to show signs of micro fractures in the horn...so i at least got a decent run out of it and for $30 i wont complain!

That's normal with horn handles. Wood can crack too, especially in dryer air. You can remove the handle and replace it with a new one by heating the tang so the adhesive melts.

Get yourself some Hooflex at your local tack shop. It is used to care for a horses hooves. It works wonders on horn handles. I treat my horn handles a couple times a year with it. It will help keep cracking at bay and lessen what has appeared. It is sort of a paste, you can put it on thick and wrap the handle in a baggie and let sit for a few days/a week. Then buff off the excess and you have given your horn a good helping hand.

I usually oil my horn handles with mineral oil. So far, I haven't seen a single crack on any of them, but I do live in a very humid part of the world. That Hooflex tip sounds like a good one--does it alter the appearance of the horn in any other way?

No it doesn't change it at all. It just moisturizes it.
I use it on my horn.
Boiled linseed oil when I am finishing the wooden handled ones. Mineral oil for maintanence.
Mineral oil mixed with clove oil for my steel.
Kiwi shoe polish and leather conditioner fot the sheaths.

Thanks for the tip, I have kept the handle oiled with clove oil since i got it (i use clove oil on all of my knives blades and handles) but will give that stuff a try...I have a saddle and horse supplies store just round the corner from me.

I know I can't even spell it:confused:

I would like a good (tactical-type) kukri with a nice sheath. I have looked at Himalayan Imports, but nothing really stood out for me. I want something a little different. Any info would be appreciated!

You may want to consider the Butchers kukri by Tora blades. It's about 14" heavy blade, and takes a good edge.

Those are big, heavy choppers--might have to get one of those at some point just for the heck of it. :) Would love to see some pics when you get your new ones.
