Help me find a knife like this ...

Well, after hearing people extol the merits of a scandi grind for bushcraft last summer I picked up a cheap Mora and tried it out. I found that there are certain tasks at which the scandi grind works very well (e.g., fuzz sticks). But here is my problem, I don't like a knife without a guard.

I don't really want to debate the merits of a guard vs. no-guard, so lets just leave it at the fact that FOR ME the traditional bushcraft knives of Mors Kochanski or the Skookum bush tool aren't quite what I'm looking for. What I wish I could find is a scandi grind, carbon steel wood craft knife that still had a guard.

So is there such a think, and if so where can I find it?

You might contact Daniel Koster (look in the makers forum) to see if he would add a guard to his new bushcraft design. Lots of threads to see what it looks like it.

Almost all of the first few here have either a guard or finger groove. The Odel is especially nice I think.

I hope that helps, but you are really limiting yourself by demanding a knife have a finger guard. But hey, if that is what you want you've got it.
P.S. Do you not use folders then? Or do they make folders with finger guards?

they make wood handled mora with stamped metal gaurds attached (double and single)

they also make integral guard plastic handle moras, where the plastic forms into a good finger protector at the blade end of the handle.

That's just what I was going to suggest. Top quality, great prices and this way you'll get exactly what you want.

The Clipper has what could be seen as an "almost" guard, and coupled with the handle shape, and great grip texture is as safe as many guarded knives without the loss of dexterity. Give it a try.

+1 the Clipper has the best feel for me too. My dad like mine so much I gave mine and a leather sheath for it.

Now I might have to replace it with something else. Mora 2000 or F1? Hmmm. decisions decisions.:D

The Rapala big game hunter has a large finger guard with ferules in the back for extra control. It's made by martinni and runs for about $40. It is hands down my favorite knife and I have used the BK-7, buck 119, puma bowie, buck nighthawk and various muela and esparcia knives. Perfect blade legnth, and extremly comfortable grip. I used it about 2 weeks ago to help my dad butcher a deer in the feild and it performed better than any of the other knives I had brought, mainly because it was -4 degrees c and my fingers were so numb and full of blood/fat that any knife with lesser grip would have sliced my fingers off.

The Boker Trance is a folder with a great finger guard that doubles as the flipper. They make a great EDC pocket knife and work just fine for general purpose cutting shores in the woods.

Im not sure how Dan would make a production full tang knife with a guard, it would be easiest to get a mora with a guard.

He'd do it the same way other makers to. The guards are pinned onto the tang, same as the handle slabs. It's one of the standard options on his order page.

2nd on BRKT. Many to choose from.

The only Barkie I can find that supposedly has a scandi grind is the Snowy River "guardless". I have a Bravo1 and that is sort of the guard I'm thinking of, not a full welded cross guard like many of the Moras. I'd like to find something with a handle like a RAT3 but with a scandi grind.
