Hey everyone. Today, I bought my brother a Spyderco Tenacious for Christmas. It opens sooooo smoothly. It's just fantastic! I had no idea how nice it would be. I really want my Military to open like this. Does Spyderco make a Military that opens this smoothly??

Thanks for your help.

Chris

I may be misunderstanding your question, but as far as I'm concerned, ALL Spyderco Millies open that smoothly. They swing open smooth as a baby's bottom and click-ACK! into a firmly locked position, every time.

Just get one......NOW.

I have two of them. And they both open very roughly. I even have a brand new one that just arrived this week from Spyderco. They are both black blades and don't have metal lining on the scales.

Are there models that have metal lining on the scales? I think this is what makes the Tenacious open smoothly.

Just a guess thats probably not right, but could the coating possibly be the cause of the roughness?

Mine opened really smoothly, but I also have a Tenacious, and that opens smoother, imo. I think I also tightened down the pivot screw on my Military (CF), but what the heck. It's not rough or anything. Just buy one. :)

I own a Military with satin finish and the action is sort of rough compared to my other knives, a benchmade 940 and a Sebenza. It's fine IMO but just not as smooth and I think it's normal.

I would not call the action on my Mil "rough"... just "resistant" which I LOOOOVE. It is actually smooth.. but tight. I haven't done any adjustments either. love it love it love it. BTW, I like knifeworks.com... (not affiliated) good folks, good prices, and fast shipping.

Yep, I do all my buying from knifeworks now. The website isn't all janky like newgraham. If i order from newgraham I call on the phone.

Your Military should have nested liners.

I'm wondering if you have an early model that is ATS-34 or 440V blade steel?

Didn't some of the early (like 8-10 years ago) Mili's have a liner only on the lock side?

Every Military I've ever handled opened smoothly. Couple open so smoothly I'd have a hard time refuting a claim they were gravity knives. That said, I've never handled a black bladed one, so the coating MAY be a factor. Miltaries made before about 2 years ago (whenever the CF/BG-42 version was released) had a single nested liner on the lock side. The BG-42 version, and all other Milies made since then, have a partial nested liner in the pivot area on the opposite side. Smoothest Military I own is the Forum Model, and that's eight years old and 440V steel. Hold the handle, flick my wrist, full battery.

Thanks for the replies. My new Military has a CPM S30V blade and a little Spyderco emblem on the blade. The older Military has the word "MILITARY" written on the blade.

I wish you guys were here to open the Tenacious and these Militaries side by side.

Just for clarification, does Spyderco make a Military with metal liners in the scales like this Tenacious knife? If so, does anyone know the part number so I can order one?

No. All Military's use nested liners (set into the inside of the G10 scales). The Tenacious models use full steel liners with the scales laid on top of the liner.

Nope, just nested ones. Really you shouldn't need them. They mostly add weight to the knife. I think my Tenacious is heavier then my Military.

In both the Military and the Tenacious there are washers between the blade and the liners (or in the case of single liner Militaries, between the blade and the G-10). So, at least in theory, the only "rubbing" on either during opening and closing should be between:
  • blade and pivot pin
  • blade and washers
  • blade and lockbar
At the moment, I have 5 Militaries and 1 Tenacious here. Two of the Militaries open considerably smoother than the Tenacious, one slightly smoother and two about as smooth.

As for weights, on my scale -

Older, single liner Milie - 112 g
Recent Milie - 116 g
Tenacious - 118 g

Think the Tenacious feels heavier more because of it's more compact mass than the couple grams actual difference.

What I do like about the Tenacious, compared to the Military, is the deeper ball detent. I'd rate its chances of opening accidentally considerably lower than the Military's.

Really? My Tenacious opens much easier then my Military...

I have the Para Military w/D2 and it opens smoother the the Tenacious. The tenacious is also one of the smoothest production knives to open that I have.

I have the s30v g10 Military and it's almost impossible to flick open. The detent is really secure and requires quite a bit of force to disengage. I've adjusted the pivot so that there is no blade play. Maybe the older Military models are different.

Very interesting that your Para opens smoother than your Tenacious. I wonder what the difference is between the Para you have and the Militaries I have...
