I'm really getting bored with my music lately. I love all of the stuff, but I'm really picky about music and that means that I have an extremely hard time finding music I like. I like songs with a lot of dynamic- and because of that, Guns N' Roses is my favorite band. Most of their songs have different sections instead of being the same all the way through- guitar solos, screeching and then singing normally, bass/drum exclusive sections etc. All of the new rock that radio stations are playing absolutely puts me to sleep. Stuff like Nickelback, Creed, Staind, Seether etc. all just seem really static and half-hearted. For reference:

Great songs-
Guns N' Roses- Don't Damn Me
Nazareth- Hair of the Dog
Rolling Stones- Sympathy for the Devil

Lame songs-
Anything Emo (that Panic! at the Disco crap especially)
Nickelback- Savin' Me
Slipknot- Left Behind

Of course there are some exceptions as far as songs being static (The Ramones are my other favorite band), but no other band comes close so I stay away from anything else like that. I'm on Pandora right now and I just heard a song by Molly Hatchet that was pretty good. Velvet Revolver is a good band, but some songs more than others (Sucker Train Blues, Slither, and Come on Come In are their best). Disturbed puts out a lot of good songs too, like Pain Redefined and Down with the Sickness, but most Nu Metal/Death Metal just annoys me. Any help would be appreciated.:D

Death Metal. Forget the vocals if you hate them, the artists in underground death metal today are some of the best at pushing the envelope of creativity, technicality and complex songs. Some artists to check out:

Demilich (Google their name to download their album for free)
Decapitated (Simply amazing, get their older to middle stuff, the newest album is different)
Death (Kind of oldschool, great lyrics later on and they really paved the way for others)
Cannibal Corpse (Find the video from the Wretched Spawn DVD for Frantic Disembowlement, it'll put anything you've seen Axle to do shame on a technical / speed level)
Necrophagist (Go look at their tabs, it's pretty insane stuff)
Opeth (Not DM in a traditional sense, but they definately offer what you want. Heavy prog influence, their style blends acoustic folk with soft vocals, changing to heavy death metal with typical growled vocals. Great poetic lyrics, 20 minute songs...these guys are unique)
Nile (Fucking insane, not much else to say. Get their newest, Annihilation Of The Wicked, but wear a diaper. It's that good.)

That's the basics of modern Death. Touches on more popular bands that should be easier to find than obscure stuff. Nile for instance has videos on youtube.

Another genre you need to check out is Progressive Rock...Prog metal too. This too is some of the most complex stuff. Tons of talent and fairly experimental at times. Here are some notable groups...

King Crimson (In The Court Of The Crimson King and Discipline are good starting out points. Two groundbreaking albums and will introduce you to how different era's of KC can sound.)
Dream Theater (Images And Words or Awake. Those are probably their best, though most think Scenes from A Memory is. Regardless, the talent of these guys is indisputable. Their guitarist and drummer are some of the biggest names in their respectful instruments today, and the others aren't bad at all. A little flamboyant compared to what I like the most from Prog metal, but it's good stuff)
Anglagard (A little more obscure Swedish prog rock band, heavily influenced by King Crimson. This stuff is kind of strange, but not to where you won't be able to get into it. Hybris or Epilog, either one is stellar)
Jethro Tull (One of the best examples of conventional prog rock done right. Thick As A Brick, which is one 60 minute song is them at their best. Aqualung is a classic and Minstrel In The Gallery is excellent too. Songs From The Wood also.)
Spiral Architect (This is some of the more technical, complex music I've heard from this genre. If you want abrupt changes and crazy instrumentals, look no further)
Rush (Another textbook example of conventional prog. 2112, Permanent Waves, Fly By Night, Hemispheres....it's hard to find bad albums by Rush)
Spastic Ink (All instrumental, very wild and proggish. Their first album is better than the newer one IMO.)

I found a cool website called www.pandora.com
Its free to use, and all you have to do is type in a band name or song title you like and they will play similar styles of music. After awhile you have to sign up, but it is still free. I found a bunch of good bands I have never heard of.
EDIT. nevermind I just read your whole post and you already know about it, sorry :footinmouth:

You need to check out Corrosion of Conformity.

The best I can describe their sound is like if...Black Sabbath and ZZ Top had a baby. Real heavy southern rock sound.

Super heavy stuff, but they're not annoyingly heavy like alot of these metal bands who try too hard. These guys rock.

Some songs to download:

Albatross
Vote With a Bullet
Stare Too Long
Clean My Wounds
Wiseblood
The Door
Wishbone (Some Tomorrow)
In the Arms of God

Another band you might like that is a spinoff from Corrosion of Conformity called "Down". The singer is Phil Anselmo from Pantera, and the guitar player is from CoC. I'd recommend you download their song "Stone the Crow". It's heavy, bluesy, soulful and it just rocks like hell.

I think these songs are right up your alley.

COC , have to be careful as to which COC you buy , the older music is more old school Metalcore , wasnt until the last decade they went to more of a heavy rock/southern sound.
I saw COC back in 1986 on thier Animosity tour , incredible. :D

Needle , dont know if you up to it but there a ton of new , semi-unheard of bands on Myspace , you could sit for hours checking out different bands from different genres (as often I do). Much of it isnt that good but sometimes you find something promising.

Dont know how much into Metal you are but if I had to recommend two new releases (new for 2006) it would be...................
Strapping Young Lad - The New Black http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...=pd_bbs_1/102-0912704-8448153?ie=UTF8&s=music
and....
Scar Symmetry - Pitch Black Progress http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ef=sr_1_1/102-0912704-8448153?ie=UTF8&s=music

Both of which are beyond outstanding and instant classics , IMO.

fellow GnR and Pandora fan here...

have you heard anything by The Mars Volta? i really like Frances the Mute as far as albums go, it's not much like anything else i've heard. but i haven't heard a bad song from them

also The White Stripes is about my favorite band anymore (probably 2nd to Pearl Jam) but i kept hearing stuff buy The Black Keys on the Pandora station and they kick some ass for a couple of geeky looking white boys. if you like bluesy stuff, you should check them out

i don't know how old you are, but have you checked out Led Zeppelin? Robert Plant is the master when it comes to dynamics and if you check out their live stuff like How The West Was Won or the BBC Sessions the solos and improv will rock your face off

The Mars Volta!!! Also check out Bear vs. Shark, At the Drive-in, The Bronx, and Death from Above 1979.

Ken, Wolfmother kicks A$$!

Ken, Wolfmother kicks A$$!

Amen, I just checked them out and they're really great. Good call K.V. Thanks for all of the suggestions so far- I'm trying to go through all of them :D

Check out demons and wizards. Their songs sound sort of like guns and roses but their songs tell a story.

Check out Generator, Against the Grain, Recipe for Hate, Stranger Than Fiction. All Ages is a good sampling of their songs over a ten year span.

Ministry- The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, Land of Rape and Honey, Psalm 69, In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up (live)

Fugazi- 13 Songs

Dead Kennedys- Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

Jethro Tull- Aqualung

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- Murder Ballads, Henry's Dream

Tom Waits- Beautiful Malladies, the Black Rider, Real Gone

As far as new stuff, She Wants Revenge is pretty good.

Nine Inch Nails. Specifically, "The Fragile", although you may also like "With Teeth". His later albums are a bit more refined, and less "industrial" than his earlier albums. The Fragile is a masterpiece - and with 2 CDs (Left and Right) there is a ton to absorb.

I'll second the vote on Corrosion of Conformity. Their latest "In The Arms of God" was probably the best mainstream metal album of 05.

I don't know if Opeth would be what you are into; but since it was already mentioned if you'd like to check out "Damnation" I promise you there is not one death-metal growl on any of it. Check out "Ghost Reveries" or "Blackwater Park" next for their "real" sound. It is really hard to explain their sound, they aren't typical scandinavian death metal; and they aren't into freakish stage acts. They are just 4 guys who like to jam...and are very good at it. My wife hates death metal, but likes Opeth. Go figure.

Alice in Chains. Jar of Flies, or Dirt. Phe-nom-enal!

Stone Temple Pilots. You like Velvet Revolver, check out Scott Weiland of the 90s. Best albums are Purple and Core.

saw NIN and She Wants Revenge earlier in the year, great shows.

if we are going back to the 90's Soundgarden is a bit heavier than STP and Chris Cornell has some pipes (Purple is one of my favorites of all time though)

Alice in Chains is good too, even back to Facelift, you get more into the heavier, less polished stuff

Yea they are , I'm pretty much a cut and dry Metal dood but I like odd/dark sounding synth stuff like that too.

Also for those of you who like Nu Rock sounding stuff , check out a band from Chicago called Cold (pretty sure they're from Chi-town).
Cold's first two Cd's are the best IMO , but the newest isnt all that bad either.

Hellacoptors-any especially cream of the crap vol.1
Goatsnake-trampled underfoot
Cathedral-any
St. Vitus-born too late
Reverend Bizarre-any
Electric Wizard-any
Cheers,
Rob

Danzig rocks. Well... the first 4 albums or so. Check out his stuff.

Songs to consider:

Left Hand Black
Brand New God
Twist of Cain
Mother
Tired of Being Alive
Her Black Wings
Long Way Back From Hell
Going Down to Die

While I'm talkin about Danzig....If you liked the Ramones pretty well, check out my favorite band, The Misfits. They're considered punk...but they really dont sound like punk to me. Kind of a real weird... spooky... raw...Elvis-like versiion of the Doors or somethin.

I'd recommend the collection 1 CD (the yellow one) or Legacy of Brutality.
