Help me i.d this wood please

Hi all,I bought this some time back and have completely forgotten what the heck it is.I think i bought it off the forum in fact.Brain cells are failing fast i guess.Is it Ceder perhaps?There is no smell,but it's stabilized which i suppose would kill the odor.I sent a pic of several available sets to a customer and he picked this.

it looks similar to some elm burl i used once.

is it really dense? or kinda light?

It does look a bit like Carpathian Elm...but from the one close-up photo it is impossible to tell.

Take some more photos of both sides and from close and not-so-close.

That looks like Redwood burl sapwood possibly with a bit of pre-stabilizing wet-rot.

It was a dealer here on the forum.He sells on ebay too,but not Mark.Bout all i can remember.From now on im writing on a piece of masking tape and sticking it right on,instead of thinking,Oh,i'll remember!It may not be stabilized.It's light and it swallowed a lot of buffing compound when i polished it.But it did buff marble smooth and hard.

That must be right.Im going to give it a go.Im a little worried about all the voids and getting a clean finish.Im used to hard full stabilized stuff.Thanks!I have something to tell the customer.

Not redwood (the grain structure is wrong), most likely elm burl.

That figure looks like bug holes to me. Ambrosia Maple possibly. Definitely not redwood.

I don't know about that. I have some redwood that looks pretty much exactly like that. I have to fill all the holes, which is why I don't use it much. I'll try and find a piece if I get a chance.

I have some ambrosia maple that does looks close to that but this one has much more dark structure and grain to it.

I agree with Mark with the exception I don't think it is burl. I think it is elm that was attacked by mistletoe or some other parasite.

Thanks for all the responses.I really appreciate it!I will probably wake up in the middle of the night and remember what the heck it is and or who it came from.It is a rehandle, cleanup, and sharpen job for a tough little CPMD2 user.I think it turned out looking good.I hope the customer will agree.Maybe finished it will ring a bell with someone.
