Help me learn to finish better on the grinder...

Thanks for all the tips guys! Sounds like I might be skipping grits too much right at the beginning, I will change that and see how it goes. I will also buy a diamond lapping plate so I can start using the EDM stones more.

How do you guys refresh a scotchbrite belt? mine has gotten gunked up on the surface but should still be good underneath that...

I've heard a few guys say they soak it in a bucket with water and dawn dish soap. Haven't tried it yet.

WD40 the blade, I even use it to wet sand....and I use windex as well.

If you are gettting rust in the time period of sanding then you might want to take it off at the 1/2 way mark, clean and hit with WD40.

I use Windex only for wet sanding and have not had an issue yet with rust.

Hey thanks Adam! I saw the cork belt on the Steve Johnson subhilt video and wanted to try one.

I've heard of a few guys using windex, doesn't that mess with your hands? Do you wear gloves or something?

For carbon steel the stuff that will really help is Mobil 1. It will keep a lot of the grit in suspension and the work will go faster as well as the sand paper lasting longer. Frank.

I wear vinyl gloves when finish sanding and finish grinding most of the time. When I'm out of the ones I bought I'm going to bring ones are home from work. You can feel the heat fine and your hands don't get chapped.

Unfortunately, I think that there si some voodoo involved. I know a guy who goes from 400 grit on the flat platoon back with that graphite cloth to a Scotch Brite flap wheel and then a buffing wheel with white compound and he is done and it looks great. I couldn't do that at gunpoint.
