Help Me Make First ZT Purchase - ZT 0770 vs ZT 0566

Wow. I don't know where to start. I walk away from the computer to put my son to bed and take a shower and come back to a ton of information and generosity. You guys made my day!

Fisher2, that is an amazingly generous offer. You are good guy, and I would be happy to buy you a beer if we ever meet. I am not going to take you up on it, but thank you very much.

Flarp (what's the story with that name?), that comparison is incredibly helpful. It is so cool that you had the my favorite knives available for a comparison. Thank you for taking the time to do that.

It is almost comes down to a coin toss, but I think I am going to go with the KSF 0770 with M4. The deciding factor was that the 0566 seemed to have a slightly less smooth profile when closed. I hate having things poke me in my pocket, so I am going with the slightly smoother 0770. I probably would be fine with the 0566, but I needed to base my decision on something.

Thanks for all the input! Seriously, you guys rock!

Flarp, is there any chance you have an 0801 and could do the same type of comparison photo series with it and the Gayle Bradley? I am most interested in the difference in thickness between the two knives.

No problem. Here ya go. These two are very similar in overall size.

Tips (left: 0801, right: Gayle Bradley) - also probably noteworthy - blade stock on the 0801 is 4mm (.157"), vs. the Gayle Bradley is 3mm (.118")

G10 texture on the 0566 is pretty grippy, but not especially aggressive. It definitely provides more traction than the peel-ply CF layer on the Gayle Bradley and the FRN on the RAT-1. I don't know how it compares to a G10 Manix. If you've handled a PM2, I'd say it's about the same traction as that.

What you should be asking yourself is do you like a flipper or thumbstud. While both are fine as flippers, the 566 can be opened via thumbstuds, with the torsion bar installed it will be a chore to open.I recommend remove it.

Here's some shots of the 0566 and 0770 next to the three you mentioned (Gayle Bradley, Manix, RAT-1), just to give you some idea of size.

I gotta say, I've seen you post comparison shots like this in a number of threads and it is extremely helpful to see models lined up like this.

Bravo, sir.

thank you, and i would be equally happy to accept that beer if we ever meet. enjoy your 770

those compare shots make me wonder exactly how many knives you have ive seen quite a few so far

The 0566 and 0770(mine is cf) are very different in my opinion. If I had to choose one for EDC it would definitely be the 0770, primarily due to the blade shape and grind, and the weight and slimmer profile.

I have both and prefer the 770cf. I like the blade shape for everyday use...cutting strapping, opening boxes, etc. at work.
The 566 is a great knife too. The G10 is grippy but not overly so, the shape of the handle is very comfortable.
Can't go wrong either way.

It all depends on your use really. I carry a 0566bw and absolutely love it. Its a hefty heavy duty knife that i use daily at work. The 0770 is super light weight and a great knife but does not feel as hefty in the hand and i like a more solid knife feel. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, just have to think on how you will be using it. For me the 0566bw works best for me.

If you want the M4 0770 due it being a exclusive/LE then get that one but if you want a knife for what they are made for-cutting stuff-then another option is save yourself a wad of money and get a S30V Spyderco Para2..

Elmax 0770-$180, M390 0770-$220 and that M4 0770 is $238 vs $110 to $120 for a S30V Para2..don't go for the Sprint Run/exclusive Para2's because the prices go way up for those..the S30v version works very well..

I will chime in here.

I'm not a big assisted opener fan. I own a 0561 and prefer the manual KVT action to assisted, and if I were looking for a smaller Hinderer design, I'd go with the 0562 over the 0566.

I own the 0770CF (elmax) and I really love it. The assisted action was very smooth. I tried de-assisting it, but it was not as smooth and I had a hell of a time centering it. What attracted me most to it is the blade shape. When I got more involved in the knife collecting business (thanks a lot BF, now I'm broke), I thought wharncliffe's were stupid. After getting my first one (Brous Bionic) my opinion changed. They can't be beat for opening boxes etc.

If you looking to de-assist, I've heard that recently (last 6 months) that the 0566 has been made without a detent ball/hole. The 0770 still has it I believe.

Where are you in NC? I own both and you are welcome to check them out.

Thanks for the offer. I really appreciate it! I used to live in Winston Salem, then Charlotte, and my wife was born and raised in Concord, then lived for many years in Charlotte. We now live in AZ. I moved a few years ago. I started using the ncrockclimb avatar on other forums years ago, and have just continued to use it for all my forum accounts for the sake of simplicity.

The OP stated he already has 2 Spydercos (including an M4 Gayle Bradley), and asked about two specific Zero Tolerance knives so why do you suggest a PM2?
