Help me pick a knife

Just travel over to Bass Pro in Arundel Mills and get all 4 :D. I love that store, I would go for one of the special edition Bucks...

I am, after work today. It is a great store, with a surprisingly decent selection of knives. I guess it will really come down to the quality of what they have in stock. If they have a Texas Jack with nicely matched scaled, and no blade play, I'll pick one up. If not, it'll be a Buck. Somehow I have a feeling that I'm not going to get out of there without spending more than 50.00.

In my opinion it is really hard to beat the 3 blades on a stockman, it gives you 3 different blades that you can keep sharpen in almost any combination you can think of, that in and of itself gives you a lot of utility in a small package.

So a Case Amber Bone Stockman in CV $40
It has the clip and the pen, and a sheepsfoot on the same two springs

Best of both worlds a stockman and the carbon and bone that will wear in to its own character far faster than the Buck delrin
And two springs that are thinner in the pocket than the Buck, the brass liners and nickel bolsters also color nicely

I have both and I like the thinner profile of the Case blades better than the thicker hollow ground blades of the Buck Cadet

Last time I visited BPS website I snagged a 309/310 whittler and couldn't be happier with it. But I'm torn since I love my Texas Jack and the 303.

My problem is I would be tempted by all of them and definitely wouldn't get out of there with spending less than 100 bucks :D

That would be an excellent choice. I am a huge stockman fan, for the reasons I mentioned, when given a choice of knives I will grab a stockman almost every time, unless I know that there is going to be beers that need opening then I grab a scout knife, always be prepared and all that.

They actually do have the amber bone stockman. I might have to check that one out too. Lol. My initial thought was to get the Buck 55 since I don't own any small lock backs. Well, I guess I'll just have to go there and drive the salesman crazy by fondling every knife they have. :)

You might want to check out Buck's 503 if they have one in stock. I personally like it alot more than the 55 and it is one of my favorite pocket knives.

Hey,till they grab thier hair and scream"Just buy something or get out"it's all good:D

Good luck with those holiday crowds. Between shoppers this week, the casino and airport traffic, it should be a true nightmare. Just think though, once you get inside, and see the madhouse at the gun counters, you should be the only one at the knife counter. Unless Carl, Chris or I walk in ;)... Afterwards there is a little bbq place in Lisbon :).

I've gotten mesmerized in the fishing department before, now you have me interested in visiting during one of the worst travel weeks ever. If you ever get a chance to visit the Bass Pro in Harrisburg, stop in. Not as high instensity as the one in Arundel Mills.

Darn it, now I have to go...

:D

Even when the covers are less than perfectly matched, it's an awesome little knife...that said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the knives on your list.

Dan, you're right about the crowd. I made the mistake of going this past Saturday and you literally had to take a number to get waited on. They were serving number 95, and I was number 36. I left without being helped, but at least I got to look. I'm hoping that a Monday at 3:00 in the afternoon won't be too bad.

Your right Blues. Yours may not be perfectly matched, but I'd take it in a second. My pet peeve in mismatched scales is in the color more than the jigging. I have a few Cases that have one deep, almost burgundy color on one side, and the other is fire engine red.

I have several (mostly older) Case knives where the covers aren't particularly well matched (though in each instance I still like the knife). I even have a couple of customs of which the same can be said and I still like those too.

No pun intended but it comes down to a case by case decision. Your own discriminating eye (and fingers) will let you know what's ultimately acceptable. I just wanted to illustrate that even something clearly less than ideal can still be very good. I love that little TJ and the CV just sharpens up great.

Gotta go along with some of the others here. It's hard to beat a Texas Jack.

Have you ever done advertising? You're making me want to buy some knives! That is a beauty. Another one to add to the list.

Not only are the customs, semi custom and vintage knives you share neat to look at, but a basic CV Texas Jack (albeit with amber bone) looks really good. Nice detail on the scales, just didn't expect that from a basic CV Case. I'm going to take another look at them, and other Case models, next time I visit BP (I usually go for just the Bose models). Maybe invest in a camera phone, other than my cell phone camera.

I really like that bone. I think the mind control is taking effect...

My thought is that you should get one of each. Keep the one you like the best and do give aways here of the others..

:D

I do have to admit to liking those Texas jacks a lot..
