Help me pick a knife

You don't see many of these for me, but what the hell.

Now that it's time to go fishing again, I decided I wanted another knife to take along. I mainly carry an RC-3 on a lil shoulder rig and decided I wanted another knife for the rotation. Fixed blade please.

I do most of my fishing from a boat. The knife needs a sheath system that can be rigged in a variety of ways. It will mostly be used for cutting line. But it will also need to clean fish and cut bait. Occasionally I get a lure stuck in a tree or bush, so there will be the occasional wood work as well;)
I don't do much filleting, and when I do I use a fillet knife,;so it doesn't need to do that.

I don't have a set budget, and you can recommend custom maker or production. I would like to keep the knife between 3"-4.5"

Oh and lets go stainless.

Thanks for the help:thumbup:

Oh, and no Mora recommendations please;)

Stainless rules out the Rat Izula but I figured I'd mention it. Damn....stainless - you wen't right off my radar :D I'll suggest a Sypderco Bill moran drop point. They've dropped down in price lately, come with a nice kydex sheath and legendary spydy sharpness!

Cutting mono I use a pair of quality needle nose pliers.
The wire cutter on them works a treat.
Cutting braid, on the other hand requires a knife and that'll be the knife du jour.
:dunno:
I'm tempted to dummy cord a pair of kiddie saftey scissors to the fishing vest just for the braid.

but...
you did ask about a knife, didn't you?
:D
How about a nice Toothpick style fish knife?

This is my old KBar, we've been around :)
You can still find them and the Imperials on ebay.
Toothpick blade, second 'blade' has a fish scaler/hook disgorger. Some have a bottle opener on the second 'blade' as well.
Little hook sharpener on one scale as well.

I think Case is currently making a FishPick as well.
:D

A couple of suggestions for ya, Tony- look at the Sog Field Pup and Seal Pup. The Field Pup is the right size and more 'traditional' outdoors looking. The Seal Pup is a little larger and more 'tactical' looking. They are both available in a variety of finishes and edge configurations, if having a partially serrated edge might help. I have NOT handled either, but I did solve my little knife dilemma a while back and picked up a couple of Sogs:D, and there quality and F&F is top-notch. Both knives have the added advantage of being relatively inexpensive. If you're interested, I can PM you with the cheapest place to get 'em.

Have you thought about drawing up your own version of the perfect knife for this trip? It sounds like it would be an interesting project knife for someone here on the boards.

How long until your trip?

I will +1 the seal pup, I have one and it is a hell of a little knife. I love it.

Tony,
Are you trying to convince us that there is a knife out there that you haven't owned or tried?:p

Seriously, it might not have the sheath that you want, but, the Bark River Ultralite Bushcrafter would work well for the fishing tasks you are thinking about.

Another knife that might work is a Buck Woodsman

Tony,
Why don't you check out what Nick Allen has.
"NWA" forum over in the Makers section.
I've got a bird and trout knife on order from him right now.

Cheers

OK, let's see -

"fixed blade" - check
"sheath system that can be rigged in a variety of ways" - check
"the occasional wood work" - check
"not a fileting knife" - check
"custom maker or production" - check
"between 3"-4.5" - check
"lets go stainless" - check
"no Mora recommendations" - check

Well, GS, I guess there's only one choice!

Buck Woodsman is a good choice.
One of my pre-internet mainstays :D

One of the Spyderco H1 blades would be a great fishing knife. Don't own any myself, but hear plenty of good things about them. The Moran is a great blade as well. I do own one of those, and it is one of my sharpest blades.
