Help me pick, ESEE 5 or ESEE 6. Serrated or Clip Point too?

I'm not interested in any folders or Bucks. I want a fixed blade from ESEE. :)
Cool photo.

A subtle suggestion :)

since you have the BWM, I won't suggest a Junglas - they're almost identical in specs.
the 6 will handle whatever you want it to handle.
of course, you could get a 6 and an izula and have all your bases covered.

Dizwolf,
Good deal. No to to be rude, I don't like the design/looks of that knife.

1066vik,
Right, good point.
Do I dare mention a Personal Defense knife? That's still "un covered"
I was looking at a Chris Reeve Green Beret. ha

I'm unemployed right now, buying a smaller 3 or 4 would be a smart idea. (Due to the money)
I feel like I deserve to buy myself a knife though. :D

Oh, btw everybody.. I've personally held the ESEE 5 and 6. I liked the 6 better.
My local store sells the 5 for $234 and the 6 for $180.
Both are expensive! The knife connection and other online sellers are cheaper by up to $80.
Not sure if I should support my local business in a troubled economy, or save money myself.

between the esee 5 & 6.i like the esee-6 way more.
its a better all around blade..

hi, i would suggest going with the 6, with the clip point. for a self defense user knife it will do all you want. i prefer a plain edge on larger blades. it will open packages, chop vines and split wood. definatly shop online save the money and spend the difference on the molle back and pouch. with that you have a kick ass survival knife that will do anything.

the 6 in use

and a pic of the sheath along with a 3 and 4

Nothing taken as rude man :). The six sounds like what will make you happy, it doesn't disappoint :)

Yeah.

I just don't want to make a mistake. Buy something that looks great, but does not do a good job at my task.
Going to the store tomorrow, see how they feel in my hands.

The Busse Bushwacker Mistress that I have is the lightest in its series lineup. I wouldn't mind having the heaviest of the ESEE lineup, the 5. (Asides from the Junglas and Light Mechete?)

$80? That's almost 2 Izulas.

I've only had the 6 and its a good knife. I would not get the clip point. I think BARF on serrations unless its a dedicated rescue or rope knife etc.

You have the Busse get the izula with scales or the 4. If between the 5 and 6 I'd say 6 plain edge no serrations.

For no job your buying some pricy knives, I'd get a cheap spyderco or something maybethe Rat 1 folder and save money tell you get a job. I don't mean that in a bad way, hope you don't take offence but waiting to buy one of those tell you get a steady income might be a safer bet.

It was only a guesstimate :p

T-K-C, RC-5 = $164.95
Local shop, RC-5 = $234 + tax
($69.05 cheaper)

T-K-C, RC-6 = $127.95
Local shop, RC-6 = $180 + tax
($52.05 cheaper)

Yeah, better to shop online.

I was just speaking with my friends and they said I don't need the serrated or clip point.

Good deal.

I know, right. It's not very smart of me to buy knives during a recession with no job. :o :(
No offence taken :)
I have the 'extra money' and figured why not. < I should save all that extra money until I can get a job. haha

Ok glad I didn't offend you but I know some people that absolutely can't get a job so just wanna look out for a fellow ESEE nut. If your gonna burn the money you already know my opinion. I just got a bk2 which is alot like the 5, the blade might be a oil thick for most people, so again 6.

The Green Beret is a nice blade - no question about it, but when you go look at the 6 again tomorrow, take the time to notice how the point is in line with the center of the handle, just where you want it for a thrust, and the 1095 will take a wicked sharp edge, so slashing cuts are no problem.
Also, while I'm all for supporting locally owned businesses, TKC (and some others) will sell you the ESEE6 & Izula with kit for almost the same as just the 6 and sales tax locally. (the kit is worth the extra few bucks for the whistle, cord locks, and ferro/misch rod if you don't already have them)

Of course, if you just WANT the CRK Green Beret, there's nothing wrong with that.
you might also check the exchange for ESEE blades - at times you can get some smoking deals for lightly used items, if you're quick on the draw.

Good deal. Yeah, I myself need to save money as well. I can't be supporting local business when I don't have a job myself. Cheaper the better.

Yeah, the CRK Green Beret is the last on the list. I'll take an ESEE first :)
Good deal, I often search The Exchange as well. Good place for a buy.

Get what you like first... you'll be back for more anyway ;-)

My 5 was my first - great knife - I bought this for survival school and hardcore bushwhacking.
Then I got hooked on the utility of the Izula, now it's my EDC.
Then I saw the HEST pass-around and got that one. I love the design of the HEST, but haven't quite figgered out how to EDC is as comfortably as my Izzy without scaring the sheeple with whom I live & work around.

For the tasks you listed, most would be performed quite well with a smaller blade like an Izula. If you wanted something a little bigger, the HEST, 3 or 4 would do quite well. If you have hard-use outdoor tasks day-in and day-out, I would go with a HEST (smaller), 5, or Junglas, but you could really make due with any number of knives out there - ESEE or not, frankly.

You can cut down a 5" diameter tree with a Mora, if you have the proper technique - it's not having the "perfect" knife, but the application and proper maintenance of the tool, that makes the difference.

Buy the 6 plain edge, no clip point. Then once you get back to work, buy one of every other model ESEE and you'll never look back!

I don't get it--I look at your list, and I see a utility knife with a packet of blades, a stainless steel kitchen knife, and a $15-20 machete. Not only would these tools do a better job at the listed tasks than the ESEEs, but they would cost you much less.
