Help me WIP my 2nd knife into shape

I did finish the top but I didn’t put a chamfer in it. I had planned on leaving it flat but I think I will try to round it since you guys recommended it.
That’s a great idea using the drill bit I will use that in the future.:thumbsup:

Thank you guys for taking time to post pictures and comment! It’s been a great help.

This knife is ultimately a learning knife for a scaled up version that I’m going to make so I’m just trying everything to learn as much as possible.

I did some handle shaping and sanding.
This is only to 320 grit but I figured I would show how it’s going.

What do you think?
How do I address the black circles around the pins?

Looks like the holes were drilled a bit oversize & there's a dark shadow line from the epoxy. It's turning out pretty well for just starting, just keep plugging away. One thing I wonder about is the depth (top to bottom) measurement of the spine on your grip. Mine tend to be the opposite, deeper & narrower. Just an observation, not a criticism. It's not right or wrong, just what you want it to be.

Thanks for the comments!
I should be able to work on it today, I’ll post when I get some progress.

I think when I get the handle to the final dimensions, I’ll lightly scrape around the pins with a razor blade to get the black rings out. Then I’ll wet sand with tung oil and hopefully it will fill where the black was.

I wouldn't mess with the rings around pins, you will likely make it worse. Measure your drill bits and pin material, you want your drill bits just slightly larger then your pins (0.1mm). The rings could also be there due to unround holes or slightly missaligned pins.

Agree, don't try to do the pins or you'll make it worse, not better. Chalk it up to the learning curve, study the approach & just do better on the next one. I don't care how many blades you've made, it's always a learning situation, there's always something new to be discovered in our path to making the "perfect" blade. The ultimate blade is the last one you make, prior to dropping dead...

I made the pins by sanding down large timber screws, which not a good idea the more I think about it. It’s a pain in the neck and they don’t fit right evidently
I’m definetly going to buy pins from now on. And I’ll leave the black circles

Tapering then tang can mess with pin fitment - look up Noah Vachon - @Vachon_knives on IG. He just did a scale drilling tutorial on his IG for tapered tang knives - it will be in his highlights. It’s the first collection of videos. He shows how to taper the tang and how to drill the scales.

Thanks man! I’ll watch it

Handle shape is coming along nicely. I see those familiar scratches on the tang that bug me to see on many of my first few knives. It is tedious and you want to move on, but if you sand along the exposed tang until smooth, it will take it up a level.

I think I’m finished!
I finished the handles and got it sharpened up.
I need to clean up where the spine transitions to crowned, but other than that, I’m done!
