Help me WIP my 2nd knife into shape

Next thing is probably going to be a bigger version of the one I just finished.
I think I’ll try flat grinding or maybe flat and hollow ground. We’ll see.
I’m probably going to try to re-grind a friends knife soon also.

Sweet, a lots of good stuff going on. Amazing job for your first knife.

How does the handle feel? It looks a bit short maybe. I am also not a big fan of the butt shape but that depends on the taste. Maybe try something more classic on the next one?

The handles feels good, I agree that it is short; I have small hands though, so it fine for me.

Also I agree about the butt, it’s a wonky combinations of flat and rounded... I’ll change it up on the next knife. I think it would look good with a nice deep chamfer and flatter handles, But we’ll see. I might change the butt shape altogether.

This is my third knife.

It’s hollow ground near the edge and flat ground towards the spine. Evidently I ground the edge too thin before ht because it warped a tiny bit during the quench. I clamped pieces of metal on either side of the edge to correct it and it worked pretty good. It was tempered twice, 2 hrs (First hour 410 then up to 425 w/o taking it out) then 2 hrs at 425.

I took it out and went to beat on it to see if it would hold up.

It broke::(

Actually the little piece along the edge broke first and I broke the rest to see the grain structure.
What’s weird though is where it broke the first timeD7572B9D-2010-4272-BC2A-6CBBED1AAEDE.jpeg
One would think that there would be clean metal along the length of the whole break but here, it’s not. I’m at a loss, I didn’t see any cracks when I got it out of the temper...:eek:
What do you think happened?

Here’s pictures of the grain structure:

Does this look ok? My thinking is the grains are maybe a little big but I don’t know

Edit: I was batoning through wood and tweaked it to hard, that’s how it broke
