Help need some input on sheaths

Hey David this guy is a fulltime sheath maker and anyone that gets interested in Busse has the right to. What if when you got interested in doing sheaths for busse's someone said no offense but we don't want you around. You made an uncool post you could have come on and said hey my top selling sheaths are so and so good luck but you did not. I buy alot of sheaths from alot of different people in fact I have bought from you. If he can make a good prouduct than I am interested and I think alot of other people might be also.

Hi

Sorry if I came off a bit harsh, bad day.

Again no offence meant. I do not believe I said "we don't want you around"

Lets see what he comes up with, might be best if he posts & says hi ?

Do not want to be "uncool" or Un-gentleman like, sorry.

So, my top seller has been the HACK & the NMSFNO so far in the last 6 months, good luck.

Thanks

David

Thanks David

I have about 5 mashedcat sheaths and I love them he makes a great prouduct

Another sheathmaker whose work I really admire is Martin Swinkel. He has also combined kydex and leather, I believe. He also has a neat system where he uses stiff leather to make the inner liner, and a soft leather for the exterior. That would be my choice, as I don't like kydex for most applications. The stiff leather he uses will not scratch the knife. Problem is I don't want to send any of my knives to the Netherlands .

I have a FFBM I am looking to get Kydex for, and I am like 10 minutes south of Bethlehem.

It wouldn't be until next weekend but I would be interested.

As for photo's I do not know if he has done any Busse's that I know about and I am sure when he is done he will post pics. I am not his representative just a customer and we are friends he asked me what I thought he should start with and I said I would ask the Forum guys and get there opinions so that is what I am here for. I apreciate everyone's input and I am sure when he gets his knives in hand he will come on and show ya what he's got.

Man - there's alot of chatting for no pics. Does your friend have pics of the work he's done so far?

He does not live around me . But you are welcome to come visit

My best advise is to buy them as they come out. It does become a little difficult to pick and choose the top sellers as they all have many options as far as handle sizes and blade widths, combat grade and LE.

I would warn him... once he starts buying Busse it's all over:D

PS: Mashed Cat uses magnets on his fridge all the time!:D

For example, I really like Mike's work, but looking at all the sheaths on his site, the options seem endless and overwhelming sometimes. So the last time I emailed him I just asked him to recommend the best kind of sheath for the model. I like being presented with options I can choose from though, as it makes thinking about it and ordering a sheath easier.

Thank you. :)

I have started several replies to your post because it was very meaningful to me, but canceled them because I don't know exactly how to put it. Let me just say that up to now my philosophy has been that I will try my hardest to make exactly what the customer asks for, and if they like the look of something I have already made I will make one very much like it for them.

Very late in this last year I put together a "materials" document linked on my web site's "how to order from me" page describing the variety of materials available from me, but that has been the limit of my guiding what a person could ask for (and even then I would use other materials if called for and if I could get my hands on them). I see now that I need to add more to that, such as examples of the various basket weave embossing tools I have at my disposal, and maybe create some "regular" offerings for those who don't want to go through the custom order process.

I make 2 sheaths a week, on average, so I would have to quit my day job in order to have time to solicit and work on orders for every new knife I buy. . . but then I would have no money to buy new knives. :D

I was hoping to see some pics. I'm a pictures and pop-up kinda guy. After about the fourth sentence, I start getting ADHD. Now someone mentioned rare earth magnets or something like that? I never seen that before used on a sheath. Pictures?

My views;

Hope your friend the best.
Hope he can join the forum and post some pix.
David wasn't being harsh, he just stated some facts about Dwayne.
As for leather work, there are several very good people on the forum. I trust Dwayne well enough to just give him a general idea of what I want and let him go to it. Never been anything short of thrilled with his work.

Now let's see what Jerry releases next and get some skins for it.

Hi guys,

First off I would like to thank all those who took the time to reply to my buddy Joe Paranee's post so far and to those who may still do so. He posted this topic as a favor to me - thanks Joe! You seem like a pretty friendly group so I just purchased a membership. :D

My name is Richard Holloman and my handle is Rawhide Leather. I currently reside in Yonges Island, SC. I have been playing around with leather for about 50 years now and have been doing it full time for about 3 years. I like to make user friendly, heavy duty sheaths that can take a beating and will last long enough to hand down to your grandchildren instead of "art" sheaths so I don't do fancy carving or inlays and such - just not my style. I will be purchasing my first Busse today off the Busse site so I will be just getting started with these fine knives.

Some have requested something to look at. Unfortunately there's not a lot of content on my website right now as I recently changed direction and got rid of some stuff but hopefully you will get an idea of what I have been doing if you choose to visit it. I will heed the kindly advice given and will try to purchase knives when they are offered on the Busse site. I will also be trying to corral up a few from the used market if I can. I would prefer to buy users really as they will be used for forming my sheaths anyway and therefore I will probably be open to trades for those who may be knife rich but sheath poor.

As soon as I get something made I will be happy to post some photos so then it will be clear what my new sheath design concept is. I am still in some pretty heavy R&D so it may be a while. In case any of you are curious, I can say that it's not Kydex over leather or vice versa but that's about it for now. I'm not saying what I'm trying to do hasn't been done before - it probably has, but not by many that I'm aware of. I look forward to learning more and getting to know you!

Happy Trails to all,
Richard

I can vouch for Richard as a fine craftsman and a first class guy that I have done business with many times before.

Welcome Richard,

I look forward to seeing your work. I would love to see some pics of the collar you did for Joe and any of your previous work if you have photos available.

I am interested especially knowing Joe's taste for quality. I am intrigued to say the least.

Here is a pic of the collar he made me the flash has it looking washed out but believe me I have not cleaned up this collar all winter and if you guys remember pics of my dog he has the scars to prove he ain't easy on things. With some leather conditioner this collar cleans up like new. The top skin is from a cape buffalo I shot in Tanzania years back and the inner layer is bridle leather. This collar has been worn daily for years and it will be worn by my dogs son and hopefully his son and so on. He has done sheaths for a beck wsk and a martin wsk along with one that I put with one of my Bagwell's.
Richard probale does not want me to post these because they where made years ago and He say's he is much improved. Well I think these are great and I am anxious to see his new stuff.

I would say that your best bet is to go with what is currently being sold by Busse. There will only be a limited demand for knives that have been out for a while. If you are not intending to collect the older models you are going to spend a good chunk of money to make a few sheaths and it probably will not be cost effective to get them. Good luck.

Oh, and welcome to the forums. :D
