Every year at Christmas my (extended) family does a sort of secret Santa gift exchanging thing. This year I got my uncle who is really big on fishing. He asked for a knife that he could use out on the boat for everything. My parents, not knowing exactly what it was he wanted, got him a cheap filet knife from a Walmart. Knowing my uncle, this thing would probably break on him after just a few days of use. I suggested to my parents that they get him something like a Pacific Salt instead, but having spent the money already, they weren't too keen on spending another 70-80 dollars. They said that they would just give him my Spyderco Tenacious that I have lying around. After explaining to them that stainless steel isn't really truly stainless, especially in salt water, and knowing that my uncle would just leave the thing sitting in a pile of fish guts, I said that that wasn't a good idea. They are pretty much set on giving him the Tenacious anyway, so here is my question... If I duracoat the knife, will it prevent it from rusting? I know if I just give it to him as is, it will rust overnight and he'll think it was a bad present. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies, and any advice you give me on the topic.

Did your parents say you can Duracoat it? The upshot of your last thread was that they don't want you messing around with knives. Of course you ignored them repeatedly, so I guess I don't see what would stop you this time....

Wow... Long time no see Marci lol. Yeah, I asked my dad and he said it's alright. I guess he just wants to see the thing as far away from the house as possible.

Not that a folding knife wouldn't have its uses as a general purpose boat knife, but if he's going to use it for fishing, them giving him your Tenacious just seems like a way of getting rid of the knife. I sometimes EDC a Kershaw Vapor III, really like it, and decided to get my dad one to take on fishing trips. So, I gave him a Vapor III as a Christmas gift, and the following summer, went with him on a fishing trip. It became clear to me that, for a knife used for everything from cutting line to lure packages to fish, a small fixed blade would have been the way to go. I realize that I'm talking about a knife significantly different from yours, but still, it's a folder made with the same steel, not really suited towards use with wet hands or gloves, and sure to attract fish guts and various debris.

If you have any say in the matter, I'd suggest something along the lines of a stainless Mora, such as a Companion or Craftline. I believe the sheaths have a drain hole at the bottom, and the scandi grind blades are excellent for all sorts of utility purposes. There is a reason Mora knives are extremely popular as camp knives. Of course, if your parents insist on giving him your knife, even the under-$20 price of a Mora will be too expensive.

Yeah, I actually suggested a mora too, but they already spent like $60 on some piece of crap from Walmart, and they don't want to spend any more. I'll try showing them one, but at this point, it seems pretty hopeless. I guess I'll have to kiss my first (and only) Spyderco goodbye lol. I don't know why they want to give him the Tenacious, I've used it a ton already. It's still in great shape and really sharp, but it's all scratched up, and is obviously not new.

Um, remember that whole buying, carrying it, and using it without their permission thing? That would likely be why they want to get rid of it. Honestly, if you ever hope to get a knife under the approval of your parents you should probably quit butting heads with them over knives. Let em do what they want. They are in charge like it or not, good decisions or bad.

Further, I see this thread going the same way as the last one if you can't understand what is happening here, IE you fighting with your parents about knives and then asking strangers on the internet for advice.

No, we aren't really butting heads anymore, and I'm fine with getting rid of the Tenacious, but seriously, we're having a talk about me being able to use knives when all I want is to know if duracoating one (which my dad has already okayed) will make it useful on a fishing boat. If someone would answer that it would be greatly appreciated

Secret Santa gift swap already? It's only July...If you "got your uncle" why are you giving suggestions to your parents? Why would they give your knife away to someone else?...please move this thread to W&C

Don't know about duracoat. If you're serious, try Stellite 6K or maybe Vanax. But you won't find one for $60 at Walmart...

So. According to you they don't like knives. They think they are weapons. And they don't want you around them. But they keep the Tenacious around, and they bought your uncle a knife that will sit around the house (and you) until Christmas, but they changed their mind and want to give him a beat up Tenacious (that you weren't supposed to use), and they are going to let you Duracoat it sometime between now and Christmas.

You just keep diggin' this hole, don't you? Not buying any of it. Really, its time to hit the Reset button and come back with a question that is believable while there is still time to do that. And there really is.

For now, I call shenanigans.

:topsy_turvy:

You can return literally anything to Wal-Mart. I haven't been turned around once. Return the knife and buy him a Spyderco ARK.

This must be an ongoing saga. Based on your original post, I ASSumed that you were a teenager. But then I read your profile... WTF?

Alright thanks. And yeah, they bought a set of 3 really bad paring knives with "surgical stainless", so I don't think they'll last him long

Still don't know why you think I'm making any of this up man... They don't want me cutting with the knives, but I guess duracoating it is okay. And yeah, the knife is for him not me, and I guess they don't see the ones they got as weapons. My parents are really inconsistent with this stuff man haha

What's w&c? I'll move it if you want. And BTW my parents were just out and saw an opportunity to check his present off of the list, so they bought it.

What?!? You are not even making sense anymore. Who bought the paring knives for who? And what about the set of Opinels you were going on and on about?

W&C is a sub forum called whine and cheese. I was suggesting that the thread was moved to that forum, based on the fact that I was not sure that your original post was legitimate.
