I am looking for a tactical knife for self defense...i have my eyes on this one for a while

CRKT m16 14sfg
m1614sfg.jpg

i like the steel seem pretty decent...(equal to aus8 ?)
and i like the flipper design too...fast to deploy

this is another opinion

Cold steel recon 1 tanto

what do you guys think of both?

Try a spyderco waved endura in full serration or plain edge...

um....i would prefer a tanto blade only =P cz i only use this knife for self defense...i already have an edc knife =)

Then get an Emerson CQC7bts. They were designed for this purpose.

the cold steel recon is probably built better and stronger, though crkt would be fine for self defense and the flipper is pretty good for deploying.

i like tanto knvies too, the new benchmade ascender looks nice.

I'm just thinking of the advantage gained by a waved knife :D

Don't get serrations on a SD blade, a knife should cut easily into a target and come out just as easily. You aren't trying to saw rope with it.

oo...i was thinking that a serrations liek that on the crkt would make the cut more nasty lol....i guess its not that helpful haha

Tanto blades seem kinda useless you're in the military.

I recommend you go to gutter fighting.org for some good knife tips from marines and ex-military.

Emersons are the way to go if your looking for a little peice of nasty that can be carried just about anywhere i reccomend the emerson combat karambit worth every penny, my favorite SD oriented EDC ever.

well the spyderco civilian was created for self defense, and it was made fully serrated. maybe sal will see this thread and tell us more.

I had one and sold it.

I have the CS Black Talon now and it's NOT serrated and I like it much better, plus it's built a lot more sturdy.

My main SD folder is the CS Hatamoto now.

Hawkbills seem more practical you can you use them to cut boxes and for SD.

Yeah if you buy a cheap one yeah.

Spyderco says the Civilian isn't for utility and you will void the warranty if it's used that way, it's a SD knife only.

The more expensive ones I would use for SD only, but that's my opinion.

Spyderco Civilian was designed as a special-purpose knife. I own one and I've carried it as well. However, the Spyderco Civvie was not designed as a SD carry knife, it was designed as a back-up, last resort & deep cover knife. It was meant to be used by someone already grabbed and on the ground to shred somebody's arms.
