Look sir, I don't appreciate the attitude. I'm 59 years old & am not very savvy with computers. I have been searching on here & google both before posting ANY of my questions. I never seem to find the answers I'm looking for exactly. I am new to forums so if I am doing something extremely wrong I am truly sorry, but there is no need for any of the sarcasm & attitude going on here. I do not intentionally look for handouts, I have been working hard trying to figure everything out whether you think so or not.

I DID listen to the video, I wasn't sure if the heat was the ONLY reason for the tile platen, it didn't seem to me like heat would be much a problem on a belt sander. I didn't know if there was another more sensible reason.

You have been bad-mouthing me on nearly all of my recent posts + my profile & it is uncalled for. Again I'm sorry if I come off as the type of person your viewing me as, but I assure you I DO use search engines & the blade forums search before posting anything.....I've heard enough from you to know what I should do. Maybe I need things simplified just a bit - keep in mind this is all foreign to me.....it will take time to sink in. Also when you said look for Gators, I thought that was a MFG not a name of a product under 3M.....which explains me not seeing it.

I'm trying.

As far as your posts & messages to me putting me down, it really needs to stop.

I answered your first 50 questions with more info and effort then most would, because I'm a beginner too. If you're not computer savvy I suggest you buy the book , I usually buy the book and have a pdf version too. As I said before Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop is a good place to start , I also liked How to make Knives by Bob Loveless and have hardcover to reference where ever I am. It's tedious when I put a lot of effort in answering your initial questions , providing sources , links and all I physically know about the subject you were asking for and you disregard all the advice and just ask again . I'm a former paratrooper combat vet with 3 tours who is hung over today and still working on knife related projects and every time I took a break I saw a new thread asking a question that was already answered so don't take it personal. I'm a nobody here .

Seriously?

Why the attitude?

Do you realize you yourself have asked plenty of questions?? And, not followed the advice given? I mean really...
This forum has a a steady stream of newbies coming through which is why the Count posts his standard reply....if it bothers you answering the same question a million times, then don't.....Because it will happen...

There is no call to be abusive. In fact I believe an apology is in order....

Blandies,

As far as the reason for a ceramic platen. The main reason is the steel platen will eventually be worn away and will not maintain a flat surface...therefore making nice smooth repeatable grinds difficult...

As far as learning... Read the stickies Count provided... Use the search function.. If you don't find the esluts you want try using different words like grind instead of grinding....

Ask all the questions you need to... This attitude isn't typical of this forum and if it continues Bladsmith will put an end to it...

I edited the posts and apologized , I'm grumpy today and shouldn't be taking it out on others just trying to learn like me .

Blandies, I'm by no means a knifemaker, so take my thoughts with a drum of salt.

As someone mentioned already, you're angle grinder will work fine for profiling. Cut-off wheels for straight lines and grinding wheels for roughing in the shape. As for your sander, look around the BritishBlades forum for some fairly ingenious ways to make it work. A simple 2 inch platen attached to it and split belts may help. You can also have custom belts made from some of the better vendors so you're not stuck with quick wearing ones.

As for the trolling going on here, just ignore it and ask what you need to. That's what this forum is here for. If someone is annoyed by it (especially after being here the grand sum of a few months) they can either get over it or kindly bugger off.

Thank you guys for the words. I don't blame this forum at all if one person comes along and has a problem with me, it will happen.
I've looked time and time again for "the count"s stickies but am not seeing any. I searched users but "Count" could not be accessed? Is his user name "the count" or does he go by something else on here.? I googled "blade forums the count" and nothing came up at all there either.

As far as what I'm looking to do so you know more on what to tell me on steel type - I wasn't sure. Just all around practice on all types of knives. I do know I will be making small woodcarving knives if that helps. I'm going to get the 154cm & use that for now.

Again for those helping, you have my thanks. I'm sure I'm missing a lot on here I'll have to admit, this is a big website. So sorry for any repetitiveness.
And no problem duffy we all have our days. You served & have the right to say as you wish :p

Where did I disregard anyone's suggestion , I've always thanked people for their advice even if I go in a different direction. Not trying to pick a grudge with you since I enjoy your posts and what you bring to the forum. I should probably stay off the keyboard today and just let things lay . I apologize for being sarcastic and unkind earlier today, it's not my nature and I generally try to pass on whatever info I have learned from others to others .

I apologize for the earlier posts and did try my best to answer many of his questions, you won't have anymore attitude from me . I love this forum and it's always on when the computer is on . I AM very new and try to pass on everything I have learned so far to others . Combat stress, grumpiness , whatever it is I'm sorry.

It's all resolved no worries duffy. On my part I will try to keep my posting to a minimum and not be "one of those" people.

we've all been through an awful lot and I think everybody would benefit from a little bit of tender, man on man contact.

GROUP HUG!

Ask as much as you want , just take a look first and you'll probably find your answer.

No worries. Just always good to give others the same courtesy you would ask for yourself.

Oh o.k. I did save your post and many others to notepad and keep it handy.
Earlier you said it wasn't ceramic tile for the platen but a pyroceram/glass. I referred to this video here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvbGy_SqMtc

Is regular flat ceramic slick white tile not a good idea? Because that's what I bought.

It will work , pyro-ceram is just better you can find it at usaknifemaker.com just enter platen in the search box and scroll down , there around $14 and there is a tutorial on how to install them also.

I seen the link already posted. I was just making sure on the regular ceramic before I mount it tomorrow. Didn't really want to fork over $14 for one when the regular tile was so cheap.

Try it if you want

I don't believe that the tile is as flat as the glass.

I went straight to the fireglass glass because ti knew the glass shop would cut it for me.
$6 each for 2 x 7 ?

what I did for a platen on my 1x30 is just cut a piece of of glass and glued it onto the platen that was included. I did bevel the glass a bit and it works quite well.

Duffy has been warned.
Lets all let it drop now. I am locking this thread. If the OP has any further questions, he can start a new one. I was going to delete the profanity, but it has been copied so much that it would take an hour.

Folks, this is a public forum....keep it clean and keep it civil.
