Help, shoulder bag question

I use an isaelie paratrooper shoulder bag..I think I paid 20 bucks or it at an army navy store...Real tough..

i'll be honest at the risk of being called a hippie yuppie here on teh boards, but i got most of my shoulder bags and backpacks at GAP...
Much more gray than any maxpedition pack. I prefer low profile stuff for non-duty wear.
What's the advantage of a shoulder bag over a normal backpack?
For my use? It is essentially my go to war bag and has extra HK P2000 and AR mags. It also has trauma dressings and quickclot. I can get to the mags in a hurry. I don't want all that stuff on my belt all the time, but there are times when I would prefer to have the extra ammo. A pack isn't useful as it wouldn't be accessible. A leg rig or chest rig would work too.

What's the advantage of a shoulder bag over a backpack for around town civvy use? Probably doesn't matter much. But I don't see people carrying backpacks/bookbags except near college campi. I see over the shoulder bags all the time.

A pic of me from today at my buddies place before we left snowshoeing. This is the only pic I have with my snowshoes attached to my pack.I'll try for a better one tomorrow.

here's my gearslinger in the snow.I have two bieners attached to the top to attach my snowshoes to.

I don't know about anyone else, but the way that bag carries that 'hawk, is just. . .too friggin' cool. I can't help but think that if a pioneer type from the fur trading era was transported forward in time and shown modern gear, something like that is what he'd rig up.

Lapolicegear.com has the Pigmy Condor on sale now for $39. I picked on up last week. 2000cu In, packs down quite small, but seems to hold a lot of shit. I turned it into my truck bag. Great bag for the $$.
Also, they have a Gearslinger, I forget which one for $59

The North Face do a couple of hardwearing, weatherproof shoulder bags, which might suit.

I sometimes use a small shoulder bag along with my main pack, to stash items like shades, sunscreen, wallet, etc. To carry any amount of weight I definitely prefer a backpack though.

For a few years I went the cheap route by taking an old army buttpack and adding a shoulder strap and changing the straps on the front.

Recently I have been using a SPEC-OPS buttpack with the side pouches and their shoulder strap. It gives me a bit more space.

You know, I've taken to carrying that same book with me...Western Edition though!

Robert H sure like the look of your rig, been thinking about picking one of those up myself!

I also really like the cheek pad on your rifle there...you've got some classy looking gear all right!

Great thread!

I never could find a shoulder bag I liked, and could afford.

Wound up making my own "Murse" (Man Purse  ):

Also like the idea of the top flap opening away whilst wearing it, for me messing
around with buckles or zipper for main opening was alway a pain. With this'n
unclipping just the front hook give adequate access to the main compartment (although
in the picture below both are unclipped):

Ignore the gratuitous knives, the pics were actually taken for another thread :o

The suspension straps are also a bit different from what I've seen on the market.

Works for me; but may be a bit too strange for most...

Vary your sources, practice your methods.

Jeez nice rig! Hard to believe that's homemade!

Of course I guess if Vietnamese ten-year-olds can make gear, why couldn't we?

Robert I dig your rig but have a question? How does your back feel after a hump throught the woods? Ive a typhoon gear slinger and after a day at the ZOO my back was killing me... justwondered as i feel you have a well thought out kit and im thinking of copying it.

I picked up an eagle butt pack and attached a sling to use it as a shoulder bag. I really like it and i have all the room i need.

I'm more into retro looking bags, The type Indian Jones would use to stuff ancient artifacts with..

Well after a long search, this is what I've decided to purchase:
http://www.nomadtravel.co.uk/catalog/browse/daybags/sahara-raider-bag
I find this actually very convenient for the things i'll be packing, and if ever I get tired of carrying it with 1 strap or if I need a more balanced carry. I could just switch into backpack mode.. which is pretty cool ;)

You'd probably like the Frost River line of bags. . . More pricey than the one you chose, but very nice. http://www.frostriver.com/

I'm going to have to look into the Maxpedition stuff myself. I'm searching for my first handgun and I'm probably going to go with something that's going to be too big conceal easily on my person. The Jumbo Versipacks look like they'll fit the bill nicely with a concealed carry pocket, Nalgene holder and plenty of space for all the other gear I might need on a daily basis.
