I assume you've done a search in this forum to see if others have had a problem. If no one else has had an issue, I think you should publish his name. Hopefully you've not been ripped off and the fellow will respond here or to you personally.
You've been treated like dirt, you are out money and swords. I'm mystified as to why you WOULD NOT be posting the name of the maker? In fact I'd be here, at myarmoury and at swordforum too if I were in your shoes.
In general, there is NO excuse for lousy business practices. I know that most makers are one man shops. I know stuff happens. It's no execuse. Either you are a professional or you are not. The VERY least anyone can do is communicate in a timely manner with their customers.
Perhaps I am being more than patient with this maker. I have contacted my lawyer and she is in the process of drafting a letter to this individual. I am also looking into other avenues to take to resolve this. I have read some postings of this guy disappearing on the forums for extended periods of time and then popping back up. I have not found any postings where he has failed to live up to his end of an agreement to trade or perform work on knives. I have gathered that he was a relatively new maker but seemed to be well liked among the other forum members? I contacted a moderator before posting and asked if he might have any information and he said it was unfortunate because to quote the MOD, " He seems to be one of the good guys? The Moderator made attempts to gather some info for me but wasn't able to find any info or contact this individual. I also want to give him one more chance to contact me before I post his name and further details on the transaction.
Thanks SDS, I did a search on a site called pipl.com and it turned up some interesting info. that if I had seen prior might have made me wary to take him up on his offer to do the work? I think I will see if that number you found on ZABA works? Thanks for your advice.
