Help with cutting burl??

The instructions I gave before are with the assumption that this is a bunion.
Under the bark it you see a smooth swirly surface then it is a bunion and the instructions are correct.

But.......if there are a million pointy pins then you will want to cut differently.
If there are points all over then it is a pin burl and you want to cut it differently.
Cut the strips at least 2 inches wide.
Then lay the strips on side and cut 1&1/4"+ strips so the faces are parallel to the outer surface.
That way shows off the eyes best.
Like this.

Thats exactly what Im talking about .Every single cherry burl Ive ever seen was like that.I learned a new word;"pin burl".

Just to clarify Manitoba Maple is the same as Box Elder. Same tree as some have mentioned. The Manitoba Maple name is a Canadian thing. Always struck me as putting a good spin on Box elder which does produce lots of burls but is a much much more weedy tree and less pretty and useful a tree then the real Maples.

Cool thanks for all the help guys.. I will cut it up I hope this week and get it sealed and set away for drying :)
