Help With My First Handgun

I didn't realize there was so much controversy over lasers! I didn't mean to strike a nerve gents, just wanted everyones opinion again. I was thinking of getting this tiny laser. Its 100 bucks and supposedly very light weight. What do you think?

I don't think any of us have been taking the laser dispute personally -- at least I hope not.

I'm not sure this laser is the way to go, however. First, having something on the rail like that really limits what you can do from a holster. Second, I'm not sure how it is activated. Ideally you'd have an on/off switch and an activation button and both could be easily accessed at any time.

As I mentioned before, I'm a huge fan of Crimson Trace products. They don't interfere with holsters, they don't replace parts (like the ones that replace the guide rod). They are easy to install and are instinctive to turn on (or not turn on as the situation requires). There is no external wire/switch add on. They are also away from the muzzle so they are less likely to get dirty. They are also extremely durable and well engineered.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help with my first firearm! There were some really helpful recommendations and leads. I "pulled the trigger" on a Glock 19. Serious customizations to follow. Stay tuned for pictures! Thanks again gentlemen.

Good choice

Did you get night sights?

Not yet man! Definitely on the list of additions however. Without digging into the thread, which did you recommend again?

About night sights, I am a big fan of AmeriGlo, and for the Glock 19, my choice is their GL-115 night sights.

The laser has its advantages and disadvantages; you may need to see them for themselves.

I'm actually more surprised this didn't turn into a "9mm is for sissy's and .45 ACP are for real men" thread lol

If you want a polymer gun, then go with a Glock IMO. Depending on which one fits your purposes and or hands better the 17 or 19. If you want a steel gun, go with the CZ 75B. You want a alloy framed gun go with a Beretta for a larger gun (more of a range gun) or a Sig P226.

As far as polymer guns go, another one that's definitely worth a look is the FN FNX9. HELL of a gun. Can't get them here in CA yet but I've used the FNP guns which it's an improvement on. Ergos are great, reliability and accuracy are stellar.

Ken's suggestion is a must for premium night sites, however the Glock night sites/GNS are excellent and I am sure at a much better price, trijicon's are very good as well. The GNS will offer a great price and will not sacrifice on quality.

I would 10 to 1 rather have night sites than any laser.

Congratulations! For sights to replace the plastic junk ones that are probably on her, you might also look into the Heinie Tritium Straight 8's. I have them on all my handguns and they are all they are cracked up to be.

I also know some federal LEO types like the XS sights a lot as well.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better combat handgun than the Glock 19.

All joking aside, it strikes the best balance of size, weight, capacity, reliability, and any other factor you can think of. The only time I would suggest something else is if it doesn't fit your hand, but the new Generation 4 version may solve that with interchangeable backstraps.

My wife's only pistol is a Glock 19. Here is mine, which has an OD frame, in its Del Fatti ISP-SS (IWB) holster:

LOL.... I love the pic Ken!

I have to agree here! The G19 is one of the best all time Semi-auto's made! I had one about a month after they were introduced.... awhile later, when they introduced the model 23 (same size but a 40) I made the error of selling my 19 to get a 23. Ugh.... wish I hadn't! I have my model 23 still.... only because my brothers has the next seriel number! #635 and 636! Otherwise I would have sold it after the first time I shot it. The 9mm was/is SO much easier to control for fast followup shots!

Anyway..... a Glock Model 19 is a super auto! Get one.

The Glock #19 is a favorite of mine. If you can spend up to $800.00, the HK P-30 and the P-2000 are beauties. Ambi controls, and You can select the Variant you want, as to the weight of the trigger pull, and DA/SA, or DAO choices.

Do I love Glocks and 1911 variants yes!! would I reccommend any striker or single action trigger to a newb Chit No!! Before you buy do a basic gun safety course at an indoor gun range that rents many different types of firearms and try them out. For now stick with something with a double action trigger and a manual safety.
