Help with stolen knife

I had to fly and packed my knife in my checked baggage inside my toiletry bag. My bag gets left behind by the airline in the connecting city and when I get it a day later it's open and of course my knife is gone. I'm well aware that this happens all the time, it's happened to me before and I usually pack it inside a sock in a pants pocket or a shoe, not that any of that could've helped.

I call the airline to report this and they direct me to a claim form that I have to fill out. The problem is that for any items over $100 you need the receipt for that item. The stolen knife is a Caly 3.5 zdp189 that I got on the forums so I have no receipt and I can't find the email of the trade/purchase.

This sucks.

Look through your paypal receipts, problem solved; unless you paid cash, traded, or used beaver pelts.

I actually used beaver pelts, no receipt.

Impressive!

If you're going to fly, mail your knife to your destination. That way you only have to be bladeless in the airport, and since it's in your baggage anyway, you don't have access to it so it doesn't matter.

Jeaz, didnt realize baggage theft was so common (i dont fly often), does that mean your better off leaving most valuables behind?

I fly very often. At least 4 times a month. And I've been doing that for years and ive never ever had anything stolen. Nor was my suitcase opened. And I fly with 2000$ customs. Granted I use a padlock on my suitcase but its outrageous that stuff like theft happends from personal baggage in secured areas.

Thats a great idea if you are going to a friend/familys house. What happens if you are going to a hotel? Do you mail it to the hotel? I can see problems with that too.

Locks mean nothing. If you use a suitcase with a zipper, all it takes is a pen to open the suitcase. I have seen locks cut too. There is a deomonstraion on youtube of how a pen opens a suitcase with a zipper. Its sad that things probably get taken from a suitcase everyday and nothing gets done about it.

Thanks guys, those are great suggestions but I've already heard them on other threads.

MEJ: Your link doesn't work for me, but I just tried searching for "single content type" then put zdp189 and caly 3.5 for keyword and searched in specific forum "the exchange". I don't get results, am I doing something wrong?

I've mailed knives/multitools to my destination hotel, usually a Rough Rider and a giveaway MT. No problem if they go missing, but none every have. I send them back to myself at the end of the trip or give them away. I probably wouldn't send an expensive knife or a heirloom.

Went to the exchange and did a search on "zdp189" and got 35 results.

The URL of my search is--

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/search.php?searchid=6963988

Don't know if the search number carries over to other folks, or if it is somehow uniquely cookied on my system, but hopefully yours was one of the 35 that show up.

You cannot link to search results, as they expire, leaving a dead link.

I've done partial disassemble and/or pack an inexpensive knife so I have one right away or won't miss that much if it's gone...then ship/mail your EDC.

I fly not that often, though probably more often than average: a couple of times per month. And I have never had anything stolen from my luggage and had never lost it neither (I mean forever). I guess I have been lucky. Anyway when I go traveling and have a check-in luggage I take with me a knife which would not be too costly to replace: some China made Kershaw or BM Monochrome or a Victorinox SAK. I have lost one knife to an airport security and have nearly lost a second one the same way when I forgot to put it back in the check-in baggage.
Well, and I can not be bothered with mailing knives to my destination and back.
You've lost a really nice knife: that sucks!

Bummer to hear about your experience. Maybe the best minimization of loss would be to file a claim for $98 and rack the rest up to a learning experience about the shady TSA? Sucks but at least it's something.

I haven't nailed down a flying-with-knives-philosophy. Sometimes I pack only a Swiss Army Knife in some crevice of a checked bag, sometimes I stash a good knife in dirty clothing or pack it someplace awkward and difficult to get to, but most of the time I don't check a bag so I just buy something at the other end. At least with electronics, jewelry, cash, etc., you can carry it on to keep it safe. What a shame that there are so many creeps and thieves rifling through our luggage in the name of "air safety". No love for the TSA in its present incarnation :thumbdn::thumbdn:

FYI, while it is convenient, and often correct, to blame TSA, they are not the only ones with access to checked luggage.

Thanks a lot Jerry! That's the thread.

Codger: You are right, I would actually blame the baggage handlers first, TSA second.

You have been lucky, I've had bags lost for 1 or 2 days a couple of times.
Regarding taking a cheaper knife or a swiss army knife, I need the knife for work (I travel mostly for work and maybe 2 times a year for pleasure). I usually take a BM Griptilian which is less expensive, but this time I decided I wanted to put one of my better knives to the test. Even though I had this bad experience I'm gonna try again on my next trip on Feb. 25th.

I did have to buy a knife here and I didn't want to spend much so I got a Boker linerlock with wooden handles and deep carry pocket clip (can't remember the name).
