Help with stolen knife

Knives go in folded socks, which go in shoes, with many other pairs of folded socks, with the shoes tied, then buried under clothes.

I even left a note when I went home for Christmas

Thanks guys, those are great suggestions but I've already heard them on other threads.

MEJ: Your link doesn't work for me, but I just tried searching for "single content type" then put zdp189 and caly 3.5 for keyword and searched in specific forum "the exchange". I don't get results, am I doing something wrong?

I didn't have the "caly 3.5" in my search, only the "zdp189". Putting the multiple items in the search box sometimes confuses the poor little search engine.

The way I did it was
1. go to the exchange
2. go to production folders
3. click on the little down arrow beside the phrase "search forum"
4. type in "zdp189" and click go

That should pull up every thread that has "zdp189" anywhere in it.

edit - looks like you got your answer while was typing up the instructions. :D

Yup, thanks anyway you were on the right track.

Cypress: HAHA that's funny, I'm gonna do that. I don't know how much it would help though.

Next time, fly with a gun in your checked baggage. You'll reduce the chance of someone tampering with your luggage to nearly zero that way.

Why is that? Just curious...is it because you would possibly have to make it known you had a gun (i would assume) to check the bag and no one wants to be responsible for tampering w it or just pure intimidation?

Sorry if that's a dumb question...to the OP that really blows man. Airplane luggage is the last place (well maybe not the laaaast) to expect theft but I will learn from your experience...and hopefully my bag never gets lost in the first place :)

Do ya think some schmuck saw it on the X-ray then kicked it off to gwap it and send it back a day later and a knife lighter? Probably...what a turd.

You have to check a firearm. The bag then gets flagged and lets just say the TSA doesn't like having firearms stolen from baggage. People tend to get fired over those sorts of things, so those bags go under more watchful eyes.

If someone was really bent on going through my luggage, nothing would stop them. The thing about the shoes, is it would take them a while to get to the knife. When it comes to luggage, would-be thieves don't have much time to root through your stuff, so placing the knife in an area that takes too long to get to would deter most. Even when I know where my knife is located within the suitcase, it still takes me about 45 seconds to get to it. The note is a psychological ploy, insinuating that the clothes are the most valuable thing in the bag... Not sure if that helps, but it's worth a sheet of paper.

But that's just like, my opinion, man ;)

I fly very often. At least 4 times a month. And I've been doing that for years and ive never ever had anything stolen. Nor was my suitcase opened. And I fly with 2000$ customs. Granted I use a padlock on my suitcase but its outrageous that stuff like theft happends from personal baggage in secured areas.

I fly not that often, though probably more often than average: a couple of times per month. And I have never had anything stolen from my luggage and had never lost it neither (I mean forever). I guess I have been lucky. Anyway when I go traveling and have a check-in luggage I take with me a knife which would not be too costly to replace: some China made Kershaw or BM Monochrome or a Victorinox SAK. I have lost one knife to an airport security and have nearly lost a second one the same way when I forgot to put it back in the check-in baggage.
Well, and I can not be bothered with mailing knives to my destination and back.
You've lost a really nice knife: that sucks!

Jeaz, didnt realize baggage theft was so common (i dont fly often), does that mean your better off leaving most valuables behind?

I used to fly often, at least once a week, more often 2 or 3 times. I had several items stolen, bags lost, and such. Once I learned I started taking bags carry-on only, never checked anything in and if I needed something that I could not carry on, I mailed it ahead of me. But for knives I would on occasion buy an el cheapo when I got to my destination and then give it to someone at the hotel (or mail it home if I bought something nice instead). Once I started handling my flights this way, my issues vanished.

A certain percentage of bags will wind up missing or have stuff stolen from them. The more you fly, the more likely it will happen to you. My suggestion is to never, ever, put anything valuable in your checked bag. Make other arrangements. If you don't, it just might be the time your odds come up... ;)
